We’ve had back to back visitors over the last couple months and I realized we have got to give this guest house a bit of love! The boutique bed of my dreams arrived a few weeks ago (9 months after ordering), and after this little refresh, the bed is definitely the star of the show. This is the first time that both of my parents are visiting and tomorrow, Chris’s parents will be here, so we did a few things to prepare. This is fun for me! Sprucing, painting, hanging curtains and art… I love the frenzy of creativity I get when I’m preparing a space for a guest which is why I do it! Eventually we will renovate the kitchen and bathroom in here, but for now we’re taking the opportunity to focus on the windows and of course refresh the bedding…
Someday I would love to paint the walls a muddy mid-tone in contrast to the white painted floors, but with the updated windows and new bedding I’m really happy with where we landed.

I’m so into this update.
There’s four windows in this guest house, and they all had bulky shutters. I’m someone who loves the charm of shutters, but they can also be really clunky. We kept the shutter’s in Polly’s room and I love them in there (even though they bump into things upon opening and closing). The guest house was already kind of dark so we opted for something different. Off the shutters went and we painted the sashes black.
I went all out on the window treatments… ina budget friendly way. At first I just ordered these darkening roman shades in the prettiest ivory color, but I wanted to hang some curtains as an extra layer of blackout for guests if they prefer. I’ve never done black curtains, but this felt like the right time and wow am I happy with them. Black velvet curtains hung high and wide brings all the drama and height to the space. I would say to anyone wanting to transform a space, updating your windows can go a really long way.
Of course I had to roll out a few vintage rugs on either side of the bed for some comfort and textile variety. They definitely help with the boutique hotel vibe I’m trying to achieve.
As for the bedding, I knew I wanted this to feel like a boutique hotel with really crisp, clean, and white bedding. Brooklinen is having their birthday sale (everything is 20% off!!) so we took advantage and got their live hardcore bundle and a summer quilt. Is there anything better than sliding into crisp white sheets at a home away from home?
Bedding is one of those things that should look good and feel amazing and this checks all the boxes. A good nights sleep is the best gift we can give ourselves and our guests. One of my favorite things is when our guests come in the house and gush about how good they slept—it’s like my whole goal. Being away from your own bed is hard enough but I’m determined to make my guests want to stay forever. Especially my parents ;). The great news is that Brooklinen is the luxury bedding of your dreams but at an affordable price. I don’t know how they do it.
We went with the hardcore bundle which includes two sets of pillow cases, a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and a duvet cover. My favorite part about the pillow cases is they’re that envelope style so they never slip off or reveal the insert. Although we chose all white, fora hotel vibe, you can mix and match your bundle to fit what you want, and they have beautiful colors and patterns to choose from. Additional to the bundle I got this really stunning lightweight quilt with the prettiest stitching.
Brooklinen is having its biggest sale of the year right now through May 4th and everything is 20%! It’s the perfect time to bring hotel quality bedding into your own room, or your guest room. I know they also have bath and loungewear basics if you’re all set with bedding. Everything is automatically applied at checkout so there’s no need for a code.

Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

We recently painted our study a dark, moody green color. This is after we first painted it a muddy green, then repainted it a blue-gray. I guess what they say is true; third time’s a charm! The journey was worth it, though, because I’m so in love with this glossy green in contrast with the […]

This room is beautiful! I love the bed, the rugs, the black windows and curtains. Great job!
I was wondering what became of the bed! These supply chain issues are NO JOKE. How are the floors holding up to being painted?
Floors are still looking great!
Hi! This is so stunning 😍 I’m curious what pillow inserts you use on the bed?
Here’s a link to the inserts we have in there!
Love!!!! The curtains changed everything! I would also love to see it styled with a regular area rug. But I know you like to switch things up a lot so crossing my fingers that you’ll try it at some point! Lol
I’m sure I will!
Julia, wow, wow, wow (slow hand clap). I’ve worked in the luxury travel sector for many years and have seen my share of luxury boutique hotels. You’ve hit this out of the park. First of all, that is one of the most gorgeous beds I’ve ever seen. The luxuriant white linens and plush pillows are spot on. I want to head dive into that bed! The mirror above the headboard worked out perfectly. I love how it’s come together. Were you able to install new lighting?
Didn’t get around to installing any new lighting, but I guess that will come in the future!! :)
That bed is a showstopper!! Love the black curtains, too. So much cozy drama!
The bed was worth the wait! In the pictures the space looks pretty spacious, but that can be deceiving. Is there room for two small chairs maybe by the kitchen facing the bed? A place to sit and read or unwind before getting into bed? Can’t wait to see what you end up doing with it. It has to be so much fun having new spaces to design and flex your talents. And to also get to try some new styles.
This is so lovely and so interesting seeing the incremental change (so much more realistic for most people in a new home!) I’m considering those Roman shades but have concerns about what they would look like from the outside of the house since the windows face the street. Do you mind sharing more details about them–would they be *fine* from the outside or would you recommend I consider some shades that might be more appealing from the outside? Thanks again for sharing a peek into the process :)
That bed is so gorgeous. And love the drama of the black velvet drapes. Well done👏🏾😍
This is stunning! What a nice place for guests to stay. That bed is incredible
What happened to your taste?
I’m guessing phase 1 makeovers aren’t your thing? You can read about how my style has evolved here, Katy!
Hmm, this room is just a “starting point” – a foundation for the “pretty” to evolve in.
Takes time & some random lucky moments thrown in to get to the final look – but even then, is it ever really finished? The fun is watching how a space evolves, for me at least.
Can I just say, in Julia’s defense (not that she needs defending by me or anyone), it takes a lot of courage to put your ideas & efforts out there into the masses for critique & judgment.
Just from a human standpoint alone, we go through periods of creativity & then we don’t.
Just like writers get writers block, artist’s dry up – there are seasons for everything. The challenge for the Marcum’s is that regardless of how inspired or creative they may or may not be feeling – they are trying to bring it every day with new content & I for one, really look forward to popping in every day to see what they have conjured up. I enjoy looking at the content that I don’t particularly like as much as the stuff that I love!
Glad to see that they are making a nice living from it too – well deserved.
And “taste” – it’s so subjective. No?
Katy, what happened to your manners?
