Having three little girls, I’ve had lots of opportunities to design and share rooms for them over the years, but the one question I get over and over is What if you had a little boy? So for today’s mood board Monday, I started putting together a mood board for a fun imaginary little boy’s room and when I was finished, I realized it’s actually completely gender neutral!
As with every room I put together, I focus on overall budget rather than choosing the least expensive version of each item I could find. This save/splurge room is an easy way of creating a classic child’s room filled with pieces that will grow with them. The complete room is under $1900!
Paint: Benjamin Moore Super White: If you are going to introduce a lot of color in other areas of the room, I love to keep the wall calm. This is one of my favorite white paint colors!
World Map: $85 This oversized, neutral world map is actually a floor mat but sure makes for beautiful, durable (read: unbreakable) art for a child’s room.
Flush Mount Light: $147
Shelves: $8 Whether it’s their favorite books or a collection they’re dying to display, it’s important to give kids a dedicated spot to do so in their own room. These shelves are perfect for either!
Art Clips: $29 To support and display their creativity.
Dresser: $599 So much warmth and texture injected into one gorgeous dresser, am I right?!
Bedding: $129 A fresh, quilted, take on the classic window pane–gets me every time!
Wall Sconce: $169 I love using wall-mounted lamps in kids’ rooms because it eliminates the possibility of them knocking it over and breaking it! This one comes in a few different colors (we got the white for Greta’s room a few years ago) but I love the pop of persimmon in here.
Rug (8×10): $195 A kids room is not really the place I love to splurge on a rug. Elsewhere–absolutely! But in a kids bedroom, I like to bank on it lasting through slime-induced accidents for at least 2 years and everything else is bonus. And you can never go wrong with stripes.
Bed: $279 The classic Jenny Lind bed in chic black grounds the room.
Basket: $59 I like to use these lidded baskets as hampers in my girls’ rooms but they’re perfect for stashing toys, too!
Sheets: $19 Sheets are such an inexpensive and, often, unexpected, way to bring in a splash of color. This seafoam green compliments the red-orange accents in the room!
Sloth Pillow: $48 For funsies.
Round Pillow: $98 This wool and felt two-toned pillow is a splurge but I can attest, nice bedding and accents 100% helped me keep my room tidy as a child and even today. It’s good to give them something to care for!

Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

do you have any ideas on what sort of nightstand would work in this space?
I always LOVE your mood boards- can I ask which app you are using in order to create it visually?
I use Photoshop
How would you recommend hanging that wall map?
you could use some little finish nails
Quick question. I’ve STRUGGLED with this one forever. We have 4 kids. 2 boys that share a room and 2 girls that share a room. We do not currently and never have had a dedicated play room (though I WISH we did). How would you organize toys in a bedroom? And because I know you’re good at this, how on earth do you keep the toys paired down? We have so many and I have no idea how. Haha. We barely buy them! They multiply!!!! Any and all advice welcome!
We’ve never had toys in rooms, but I would try to put them in a closet to make the sleep area dedicated to that
So cute! Question – which program do you use to make mood boards? I used to use Polyvore, but haven’t found an easy replacement. Thanks!
I use photoshop!
