Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

In late July, Chris’s brother’s family is coming to stay with us for a couple days so getting a guest room together has been on our list in the next couple weeks. But! We got some exciting news yesterday that my sister, Victoria, from Pittsburgh will be coming next Saturday (!!!) to stay with us (my other sister Andi is coming from Mexico, too!–she’ll be staying with my parents) so project guest room has moved to the top of the list. We have less than two weeks to whip this room into shape:

This is one of three bedrooms downstairs. Greta’s room is also down here and then there’s this 3rd bedroom:

That mess-of-a-room is smaller than the other two on this level (Greta’s being the largest) and it was serving as our guest room before we redid the floors and all hell broke loose. Then it became the catch-all room. In our last home we only had room for a full-sized bed in the guest room and that bed ended up in this room (can you see it under there?).  Since the other spare room (the blue one at the top of this post) is larger, we decided it would make a better guest room because it could fit a queen-sized bed–which is a nicer size for guests–especially couples.

All that to say, we can’t wait to welcome our family into our home and give them a nice place to sleep. Really, they would be happy to sleep on the couch–so easy-going. But since this is us, we’re actually excited to work this room into shape. Here’s a little peek at the direction we’re thinking:

Throw / Light / Bed / Linens / Pillow

Kind of like a cozy-pair-of-jeans direction. Comfortable. Calming. Casual. We have some ambitious diy projects on our list, but with the time crunch–it will be interesting to see how much we get done. Although, if you know us, you know we love a deadline. ;) We picked up a queen sized bed we found on Craigslist today and it needs work, but first–paint on the walls!

We’ll have that for you before the week is up! Anyone else anticipating guests soon?

What do you think?

  1. Love the inspiration board. It’s going to look great!

  2. Victoria says:

    Ima comin’!

  3. Wow, talk about a tight turnaround time! I’m sure you guys can do it. I love the mood board and can’t wait to see how the room turns out. Nothing like guests to really get things organized and decorated!

  4. Jackie says:

Love Kilim so much – love the entire pillow collection. The one you picked is definitely one of the best ones. I like these too:×16-handwoven-kilim-pillow-throw?ref=shop_home_feat_4×24-handwoven-kilim-lumbar-pillow?ref=shop_home_active_15

Instagram your progress along the way this week!

  5. Brandilyn says:

So jealous you have family coming to see you! Also that pillow is like holy crap. <3 <3 <3

    • Julia says:

I know!! That Etsy shop is stocked of the best pillows at amazing prices. Here’s hoping it arrives just as beautiful.

  6. Steph says:

We can’t wait to be there in a month!!!! I’m excited to experience this awesome newly decorated room then! Oh and ps make sure you don’t worry about jack… He can sleep on the floor, no problem:)

  7. Dominique says:

We had guests the past two weekends and completely rearranged our guestroom between the two sets of visitors. Best of luck getting it in the shape you hope.

  8. Rachel says:

Nice choices! My experience is that a guestroom needs a deadline or will always end up on the back burner. The Etsy shop that sells that pillow has a beautiful selection and amazing prices!

    • Julia says:

Right?! I’ll keep you posted on quality and delivery time–but $20 or less for a pillow is my kind of deal. That west elm throw I also got for $13 shipped with a promo code!

  9. Meagan Briggs says:

I love having family visit! So wonderful! My parents were both coming for the 4th, but with my new niece and my brother is moving to California for a new job, my mom decided to stay for a few weeks to help get them settled. BUT! My dad is still coming! I’m a bit relieved because men couldn’t care less about everything in its place (you should see our spare bedroom!!!!). It’s been awhile since we had someone come stay with us, and the 4th is the perfect time to party!
