Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

The large window in our great room has been bare for almost a year now. All of the curtains in our last house were sold with the house, so we arrived here empty-handed in the window dressing department.

We have (obviously) taken our time searching for just the right ones. In fact, the only other room that currently has curtains is Faye’s nursery. I have been following the Etsy shop, Martha & Ash for over a year now and when they recently added new patterned drapes to their inventory–I sprung for these charcoal patterned ones that felt interesting, but timeless, too.

I worked closely with Ashley to make sure the curtains were just the right size for our window. She coached me on length (we ended up going for a 92″ length instead of a 96″) and width and when the curtains arrived last week, they even came with a little instructions sheet that advised us how to help the pleats in our panels look their best.

Before I go any further, I should say–these are not cheap, Target or Ikea curtains–but they are the BEST quality curtains I’ve ever been in contact with. And, they’re really gorgeous. They are heavy and fully lined with blackout material and are hung by hooking the attached drapery pins onto curtain rings–so easy! Also, the panels are made specifically to fit each side of the window. With the curtains, she sent screw eyes to put into the wall right where the curtain return would be and instructed to hook the last drapery pin into the screw eye, so the sides close, there’s no light gap, and it looks finished.

I wish you could have seen my face as we were hanging these on Saturday. Every step of the way, I was in awe. I may be hooked on quality drapes, and definitely can’t say enough about the quality from Martha & Ash.

Curtains really make a room feel more comfortable, more complete, taller, warmer…although we wish we had all of those things for this room sooner–these were definitely worth the wait in our book.

What do you think?

On the return of the drapes, how long is the screw for hooking the side of curtain into the eye? I’d like to achieve this effect on my own drapes–but I’ve seen both L-shape and eye-hooks recommended. Does yours come about 4″ from the wall?

  2. Debbie Hill says:

I had Martha and Ash drapes and I cannot say enough how much I LOVE THEM! So gorgeous and high quality. Sadly, I moved and sold the drapes with the house…I am finally in a new place and definitely getting their drapes again. Yours are gorgeous!

  3. Monica says:

Catching up on old posts- just wondering fi you have ever considered moving the two couches a bit closer together- so that each can use the coffee table comfortably? It might cozy up things a bit?

    • Julia says:

Yes, yes yes! Something needs to happen here. We honestly just put both couches in here because we were having a large party and needed extra seating and it kind of just stuck. But we seriously need to reconsider the arrangement, even though it is temporary.

  4. Sue says:

Your new curtains look so soft and luxurious! I checked out the etsy shop and there are a few things that I would love to order for my own home. Time to start saving my pennies! ;)

  5. Rebecca says:

I cannot tell you how happy I am to see that someone else out there is currently living without baseboards! We’re also in the process of updating our home and haven’t crossed that one off the list yet.

  6. Screw eyes—brilliant! Never thought of doing that but you’re right, it looks so much more finished.

  7. Wendy says:

Those are absolutely perfect for your space! I can imagine how excited you must have been while putting them up. I always feel like an overly excited little puppy when something works out in reality like I was hoping it would in my head. You are much better at it than I, though – my total successes are maybe 1/3 of my attempts, and your design decisions always seem to work out. :)

    • Julia says:

Oh, not even close. Although as we have been taking our time here, and we’ve done this with one house already, we are having less re-directs. Although, we’re definitely not 100%.

  8. Amanda says:

The curtains really helped tie everything together! One of the top priorities on my to do list this year is to hang some curtains in the common area of my house. The windows look so bare without them, and it’s always amazing to see what a difference they make to a room.

  9. Meagan Briggs says:

Are those the prices for ONE panel? Holy cow! Hopefully they last for lots of years and lots of different style changes. I love the print. Subtle, but still dramatic. Sooo quietly dramatic?

  10. Those curtains look FANTASTIC! I can’t believe how much they finish the space off, and just add such a classy feel! Love them!

  11. Kristie says:

Wow I love them!! I have a serious weakness for curtains. One time I went to the store for a rug and came home with $500 worth of curtains. Oops….needless to say the hubs wasn’t thrilled. Great choice! I’ll have to check out that Etsy shop!

  12. Rosalind says:

I love the way the curtains look in your space. They literally make the room! I’m with you on purchasing quality curtains, it’s well worth the cost!

  13. Jordan says:

I always feel like hanging curtains makes a room feel so cozy and generally more finished- even if you didn’t realize it felt unfinished before! These look AMAZING! I’m in the hunt for some fun curtains for our living room, but I don’t know if I could splurge for 4 panels all at once… Thanks for the inspiration :) These look awesome, guys!

  14. Treana B says:

We took the same sort of approach in our living room, by picking a bolder rug and then designing around it. It has forced us to think outside the box with matching other things to it (or not matching, as is my preference). I can’t wait to see how these beauties influence the rest of your space. Go team go!

  15. Jennifer I. says:

Love those! I too, have been following Martha & Ash for a while on Etsy and think their products are gorgeous. Unfortunately, we have tons of windows in our home (read 3 in the living room and at least 2 in every other room), so for now, I am on a budget! Your living room looks amazing.

  16. Those are stunning! And hooray for going the Etsy route! There are so many snazzy things over there, and I love that they’re made by actual people.

  17. Marianne says:

I like the curtains, it does improve the room. Does it make you feel like the door needs something now too though? Any plans?

    • Julia says:

Hmmm, not to me. We do plan on adding another large window to the left of the patio doors in the future and that should help add some balance.

      • Marianne says:

I was thinking about privacy at night. I’m paranoid about that. The second window will allow even more natural light in. I love that!

  18. It looks so chic in there now! Love the print in combo with the dark door. Fancy!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
