Here’s some fun news–Craft Art Countertops contacted us last month and asked if our readers would be interested in a secret sale! We have used their butcher block countertops in so many spaces that we have renovated over the past 6 years and we always get a ton of questions about our kitchen island countertop, where we used plank-style black walnut DIY countertops from Craft Art. They are offering our readers 20% off any of their countertops (they have a bunch!) with code CLJ through July 31st right here.
We used the same plank-style black walnut in our laundry room and extended it up the backsplash and I am obsessed with the warmth it adds to the room. A few coats of waterlox and we haven’t had to do another thing to it!
You may remember we used a light butcher block in the Pittsburgh kitchen–also from Craft Art. Here we used the White Oak Plank Style. In the photo below, they were not sealed, and have darkened a bit since applying the sealer.
We even used Craft Art finger-joint countertops waaaayyyyyyyy back in our first home’s kitchen!
The great thing about butcher block is it can be made to look new time after time after time if you want it to. Or, you can embrace the patina that comes with life. We actually choose not to cut directly on ours, but love to use it to roll out dough. Recently we refinished our island (after 2 years) because one of the girls’ spilled some super glue on it. (You can read more about that process here…the refinishing, not the super glue.)
And it looked like new again.
If you have a project coming up, I hope you’ll take advantage of the 20% off! Just use code CLJ at checkout here before July 31st. Besides kitchens and laundry rooms, I’ve seen their product used on desktops, dining tables, bathrooms, and shelving!

I love the black paint color on the island you used with the black walnut countertop. Mind sharing the shade color and brand, please? Thank you!

Do you know if Craft-art closed? The website links you have don’t work and the number doesn’t either.

This is the last post that is showing up for me on the blog. I can navigate to the latest posts through the next post link but for some reason the blog isn’t updating for me… Not sure if this is a problem on my part or if other people have the same issue.

Thank you! Do you know if there is a shipping fee above and beyond the “Grand Total” in my shopping cart? My husband is worried about shipping cost to California.

How did it do when you used it in your first kitchen next to the sink? Thanks!

Did great! We also have butcher block in our laundry, with a sink there, and it does good as well. Just be sure to use Waterlox on the inside edge and refresh it once or twice a year.

We are doing a large butcher block island in our current kitchen reno- a T shaped top for seating etc. I contacted Craft Art to get a quote and I was so disappointed! They told me I needed to custom order which was fine, but the price point was outrageous because you have to order it from a dealer and not directly through CA. Would have loved to have used them because yours looks beautiful! Maybe we can use the DIY pieces in other parts of our home. :)

I’m in the process of remodeling my kitchen and would love to use butcher block. Our designer advised against them saying they were porous and showed wear and stains easily. Has that been your experience?
Julia

AUTHORNot at all! We sealed ours with Waterlox and they have been a dream.

Thank you so much for sharing this today! I was trying to source a butcher block and somehow IKEA has been out for month and my second source is now also out of stock. This saved my day!

Such a gorgeous piece of wood! What thickness is your countertop? Also, what is the width of the walkway between your island and cabinets?
Julia

AUTHOROur island countertop is 2″ and there’s about 43″ between the island and outer countertop.

LOVE the counters. Hopefully they’ll have another secret sale next year when I’m redoing my kitchen because I definitely plan to use them!

Good morning! Maybe I am missing a post, I looked through your different instruction posts. Do you have to cut the hole for your sink? If so how did you go about that or where is your post for that? I am terrified of that step!

I’d never seen your Utah home before. It looks a like a lab to try out many of the ideas you repeated (on a much larger scale) in the Idaho home. Loved what you did with a very basic tract house. And love the walnut butcher block. It looks fabulous.

Any experience cutting this to make into a waterfall edge? Very interested in using over our washer and dryer, and thinking i could order a longer slab and cut on a 45?

AUTHORWe did a waterfall edge in our first home. We actually just did a squared off edge.
