This post is sponsored by Boll & Branch

Our bedroom has been through a lot of transitions since closing on our home at the beginning of May. Before moving in, we had our contractors remove the tray ceiling, board up the doorway on the right leading to the front room and patch and paint. (The walls and trim are both SW White Flour.) The new white oak floors were laid and stained, and then we moved in! Chris and I both dreamed of putting our bed in the window nook as soon as we saw our bedroom and even had Modsy work it up so we could see if our King bed would fit.

The rendering looked amazing, but the real life version looks and feels even better. We ordered this bed with a low headboard that won’t be here for a few months so we can still enjoy looking out the windows with our bed placed there and bonus, still watch TV at night across from our bed.

The room today has all of our favorites in it from our last bedroom, and it really allowed us to feel settled right away. Our nightstands, lamps, even our sheets — especially our sheets — made it feel like home.

Boll & Branch not only makes the highest quality sheets I’ve ever owned — they’re also ethically sourced, fair-trade certified, and made of the softest organic cotton. They’re heirloom quality, and the style is timeless and sophisticated.

This is our primary bedroom, and I just got a second set of these Boll & Branch Percale Simple Stripe Sheet Set in Dune (my favorite!) for the guest house because they last and last and get better with every wash. And the soft stripes go with everything. I layered on our favorite waffle bed blanket (the ONLY blanket Chris approves of — it’s truly the perfect weight) and got a new duvet from Boll & Branch — the Signature Eyelet, white on white — with the most delicate details and luxury craftsmanship. It felt fresh to have one new thing in this space. (You can use code JULIAM20 for exclusive early access to their semi-annual sale — 20% off any of the wonderful bedding from Boll & Branch! – exclusions may apply, see site for details)

Besides the bed on its way, I’m also looking for a new light fixture for this space! I think something romantic like a crystal chandelier would be so pretty! Maybe something like what we hung in our last closet?! And as for the shutters — we’re going to live with them a little longer before we make any final decisions. I think that they can be charming, but automatic roman shades also sound really nice right now.

What do you think?

  1. Karen L. says:

My husband is very picky about any blanket, especially since we live in Low Country, SC. This waffle lightweight blanket is the very best that we have ever purchased! It is just as you said. We chose the cream color, which is exactly the right tone, and have used it for two nights—perfect weight, design and lovely to look at. It was a splurge but with your code, a bit better. We thank you for the recommendation as we had never even heard of Boll and Branch before this.

  2. SusanW says:

I love it but would be so tempted to spin the bed around and have your feet toward the window, then put something, possibly a dresser, behind the headboard…like a secret bed hidden there

  3. Kristina says:

Welcome to North Carolina! Have been following you for a while and can’t wait to see all the stunning work you will do to this gorgeous new home :)

  4. A Web Dev who Cares says:

Just an FYI that with the site redesign, links in the comments are indistinguishable from normal text until you hover over them. It took me a couple minutes to realize you were replying with product links, vs forgetting to include a link. I imagine many people will breeze over the comments without realizing they can click,

  5. Laney says:

LOVE Boll and Branch too! Might need to snag a second set with this code 😉 what duvet insert do you use? Our is currently too hot along with our tempurpedic mattress.

  6. Sakura says:

These are really so neat and gorgeous. Flat sheets are really a pain in the a for me because they keep getting messed up so I switched on to fitted bedsheets

  7. Barbara Fortunato says:

Love the shutters! Being on the main floor I’d prefer shades that rise from the bottom rather than drop from the too. Still see such beautiful tree tops and amazing light but get privacy.

  8. Kathryn C. says:

    Chris and Julie,

Welcome to NC! If you get a chance this week you have to see the sunflower fields at Dorthea Dix park.

  9. Ruth says:

    Love this look!
What paint color is on the walls and trim and the ceiling?
You mentioned eggshell is on the walls, semigloss is on the trim. Do you go with flat on the ceiling?
    Thanks so much!

  10. Lawana says:

Beautiful, like everything you do! Would you share your source for the nightstands please? They are exactly what I’ve been looking for.

  11. Rachel says:

In our first house, I wanted everything picture perfect and tried making our bed like in the photos in this post. Our cat also liked this method and burrowed under the various blankets and sheets during the day while we were at work. I came home to a rumpled mess and had to revert to my old bed making method. Posts like this always make me smile and remind me of that newlywed!

  12. Katie says:

This looks beautiful! I love that you are sharing more of the process as you go. I would love to see the bed that you have ordered. Do you have a link to share? I am looking for one for my little boy and would like to put the bed in front of the window, but with a shorter headboard. Thank you!

  13. Maya says:

Raising the ceiling made the room look bigger, and the paint is just perfect with the flooring. Absolutely stunning! I also love love love your nightstands!
Are you planning on adding a headboard? It will probably block a little but of the window, but will keep pillows in place. Can’t wait to see how you decorate!

  14. Rebekah says:

It’s looking great! Can’t wait to see how you continue to work on the room. Just curious if the trim is in a different sheen than the walls or if you did them the same color and sheen? Thanks!

  15. Anne says:

Where are these lamps from. Love it all.

  16. Caitlin says:

Gorgeous! I love the windows, and shutters, and floors! Everything looks beautiful…..as all of your rooms always do!

  17. Cathy says:

This might be so stupid, but is that the same trim that was kissing the tray ceiling, only moved up to now reach the height of the full ceiling??? did they preserve the trim and re use it, or was it damaged when removing the tray ceiling?

  18. C says:

Do you mind sharing which bed you got? Such a pretty room.

  19. Jess says:

Gorgeous light in that room! Curious what bed you went with? So many high headboards for sale out there!

  20. meghan says:

Your room looks lovely, soft and relaxing. Can’t wait to see the frame in place. I had an idea while looking at the photos… not sure how tall your headboard will be, but what about a table behind the headboard that runs the length of it to act as “nightstands” to fill that empty space? Sort of like a sofa table idea ya know? Either way… welcome to NC, I live in the mountains near Asheville. I think you’ll like it here!

  21. Melissa says:

I was wondering if not having the nightstands closer to the bed, is an issue. I keep my glasses, a bottle of water, lip balm, phone, etc on mine and not being able to reach it while in bed would be an issue for me.

  22. Cindy says:

I love this clean, minimal look! And the floors look great.

  23. JL says:

Wow! Removing that tray ceiling changed the game. And it makes sense to start with white paint and live with it for a while, until you finalize a color palette for the house. (I’m really excited by the mid-tone paint inspiration pics you’ve shared). I think a low profile wingback headboard would be perfect for this space. Can’t wait to see what you’ve chosen. I like the shutters, but I can definitely envision long flowing curtains behind the bed, along with the automatic shades.

  24. Karen says:

What wonderful light you have. Can you easily reach the nightstands while in bed? I keep my glasses in mine and would worry about knocking them (or my water glass) to the floor.

  25. suzanne says:

I love the fresh and basic “hotel look “of the bedding, however the nightstands being so far from the bed seems a bit impractical if you actually need to reach over and get something during the night (for me, it is water!).

  26. Juliet says:

Share a picture of your headboard. So eager to see it!

  27. Georgia says:

I never would have thought to put the bed in the nook but I sleep like a maniac so my pillows would fall off the bed. I’m impressed with the change that new floors and paint can give – the room looks fresh and inviting. Hope you’re enjoying it!

  28. Janine says:

I love laying in bed and looking out the window so this layout wouldn’t work for me but obviously you do you. Glad you feel more at home by the day!

  29. Vanessa G Parscale says:

Hello! I’m wondering do you have a split top mattress from SleepNumber? We have one and I find it SO hard to find nice sheets that go with that style bed…..

  30. Veronica says:

The bedding looks amazing! Will you be pushing the bed more into the window once you have the frame? For some reason having a gap behind the bed makes me nervous, like there’s a ghost or something haha!

Also do you like your pillows? Where are they from? We have pretty cheap, crappy pillows and our necks are suffering.

    • Julia says:

I’m really looking forward to getting our bed so our pillows don’t slide off the top anymore! Haha, but as for pushing the bed farther back–probably not. I want to kind of be parallel to the nightstands, you know? But as soon as we get the bed frame, I’m sure we’ll tweak things. I use a sleep number pillow. :)

  31. jacqueline kangas says:

Beautiful! i love the shutters, i think they really add charm to the room

    • Jennifer I says:

I love the shutters, too. Wonder if there is some sort of shade option that would work with them? 🤔

      • Pia says:

Perhaps you could have curtains behind the nightstands? Wall to wall. So you can pull them all the way back during the day and then cover the whole window at night? Shades might steel too much light, I think.

      • Julia says:

A Roman shade would feel lighter I think! Def need some curtains too
