When we moved in, Greta’s room had the most dizzying carpet in a bold color–RED. We all struggled with it, including Greta and she was anxious to get new flooring in her room. We decided to keep carpet in the girls’ rooms for now (we are laying wood floors everywhere else) since they are still so young and play and roll and tumble and jump and all over their rooms. And even though I’m only sharing photos of Greta’s room here today, Polly and Faye’s room also got the same new carpet. Their previous carpet was the same pattern as Greta’s except a subdued gray–not nearly as bad but we figured getting them all done at the same time while we were out of the house was easiest.

We loved the carpet we had in our last house and were even considering using it again but our local Lowe’s no longer carried the carpet on their floor (although they said they could “probably” be able to get it) so we decided to explore other options as well. We went into a local flooring store, Design Gallery America, and they had a plethora of carpet samples. I took a few armfuls home and eventually landed on a Godfrey Hirst Wool Blend carpet–Glen Abbey II in the color Thatch. It’s a low pile, patterned carpet with warm undertones.

Um, is this even the same room?! It changed everything I love a low pile, patterned rug because they wear incredibly well, and can stand alone but also are easy to layer an area rug over, too. Just make sure you get a good, cushy rug pad for under any carpet, but especially a low pile one. Not many people realize how important the rug pad is when choosing a carpet. The carpets in the bedroom, despite maybe not being our preference, have always been extremely bouncy and soft to walk on and when we tore up the carpet we were thrilled to find the thick memory foam pad still in perfect condition. We asked the installer if he thought we could still use it and he said absolutely! Which saved us big. We’ll likely layer an area rug in all of the girls’ rooms to extend the life of the carpet and to add a little color or pattern although right now I am just enjoying the clean slate.

It already feels lighter and a lot easier to make other decisions for this space now. Greta wants so horse art above her bed. I’m on the hunt for a pretty roman shade. We did get a new nightstand which makes me want to hurry up and make a decision about the trim in here!

I knew it would have been a lot easier to decide what color to paint the trim before the carpet went in but man, I just couldn’t decide what color I wanted to paint it–dusty blue? cream? gray to match the bed frames? That’s how design and DIY go. Sometimes it’s 11pm on a Wednesday and inspiration strikes and I can’t get started fast enough. Sleep who?! And sometimes I stare at something for 5 months with no real progress. And that’s okay. I would much rather wait it out and I can already tell that this new carpet is going to be help me make a decision.

I’m also thinking beams in here would be so sweet (maybe white or a light wood) but even if those things take months to decide and implement, needless to say, we are all loving the update. It feels so peaceful and calm in here–a great place to rest.
