When we moved in, Greta’s room had the most dizzying carpet in a bold color–RED. We all struggled with it, including Greta and she was anxious to get new flooring in her room. We decided to keep carpet in the girls’ rooms for now (we are laying wood floors everywhere else) since they are still so young and play and roll and tumble and jump and all over their rooms. And even though I’m only sharing photos of Greta’s room here today, Polly and Faye’s room also got the same new carpet. Their previous carpet was the same pattern as Greta’s except a subdued gray–not nearly as bad but we figured getting them all done at the same time while we were out of the house was easiest.

Here’s a reminder of what it looked like previously:

Those photos were taken before we wallpapered her room–you can read about that here! Changed her light here (although we want to add more lights in here and I’m thinking of several flush mounts) and the beds are from here–couldn’t recommend them enough!

We loved the carpet we had in our last house and were even considering using it again but our local Lowe’s no longer carried the carpet on their floor (although they said they could “probably” be able to get it) so we decided to explore other options as well. We went into a local flooring store, Design Gallery America, and they had a plethora of carpet samples. I took a few armfuls home and eventually landed on a Godfrey Hirst Wool Blend carpet–Glen Abbey II in the color Thatch. It’s a low pile, patterned carpet with warm undertones.

Um, is this even the same room?! It changed everything I love a low pile, patterned rug because they wear incredibly well, and can stand alone but also are easy to layer an area rug over, too. Just make sure you get a good, cushy rug pad for under any carpet, but especially a low pile one. Not many people realize how important the rug pad is when choosing a carpet. The carpets in the bedroom, despite maybe not being our preference, have always been extremely bouncy and soft to walk on and when we tore up the carpet we were thrilled to find the thick memory foam pad still in perfect condition. We asked the installer if he thought we could still use it and he said absolutely! Which saved us big. We’ll likely layer an area rug in all of the girls’ rooms to extend the life of the carpet and to add a little color or pattern although right now I am just enjoying the clean slate.

It already feels lighter and a lot easier to make other decisions for this space now. Greta wants so horse art above her bed. I’m on the hunt for a pretty roman shade. We did get a new nightstand which makes me want to hurry up and make a decision about the trim in here!

I knew it would have been a lot easier to decide what color to paint the trim before the carpet went in but man, I just couldn’t decide what color I wanted to paint it–dusty blue? cream? gray to match the bed frames? That’s how design and DIY go. Sometimes it’s 11pm on a Wednesday and inspiration strikes and I can’t get started fast enough. Sleep who?! And sometimes I stare at something for 5 months with no real progress. And that’s okay. I would much rather wait it out and I can already tell that this new carpet is going to be help me make a decision.

I’m also thinking beams in here would be so sweet (maybe white or a light wood) but even if those things take months to decide and implement, needless to say, we are all loving the update. It feels so peaceful and calm in here–a great place to rest.

What do you think?

  1. Sydney says:

I love the carpet you chose! Perhaps the very light grey of the beds for the trim
    Would be soft and lovely.

  2. Diana says:

    Hi Julia,

Looks great! Out of the two carpets, which would you recommend? Is one more affordable?

    Thanks!

  3. Andrea says:

Hi! Love your posts! I took a look at the previous carpet post as well as we are finishing the basement. I am definitely now looking at patterned carpets as you suggest. Our flooring store does supply this particular carpet and I am wondering if you would recommend this for a basement too? I would want to of course ensure that I purchase a good pad for a basement. I would love the cushion underfoot!

    • Chris Loves Julia says:

Definitely! This is very similar to the carpet we installed in the basement family room of our last house.

  4. Kaylee Child says:

You mentioned carpet, “for now.” Do you plan to change to wood eventually? Did you buy extra? Or do you worry they will no longer carry it when you want it? I’m about to buy Stuga floors from your rec and I CAN’T decide what to do in the bedrooms. Thought wood in master, carpet in my boys’ rooms, but you can see all three rooms in the same view of the hall. Is that weird? Thank you for your thoughts!!

    • Julia says:

When the girls are young and playing and rolling and laying all over their floors all day, we love carpet in their bedrooms. But as they get older–that might change? I don’t know. We’re keeping our options open!

  5. Leslie Burke says:

How has the carpet worn??? I am looking at the Godfrey Hirst as well but the reviews on Houzz are so negative. Any thoughts, if you still read this??

  6. Abby Fields says:

I love this carpet pattern too! I feel like it really ties the wallpaper in too, but is so versatile. I have found my carpet lasts SO much longer if from the first week I lay it down I put a reminder in my phone to have my carpet professionally cleaned 1x a year. Such a lifesaver!

  7. Kate says:

I remember reading your tip of choosing textured carpet that is two toned in color so that if it becomes matted the pattern is still apparent. Is this carpet two tone?
I love it and think it would work in my living room… bit it is a high traffic area.

  8. Jessica says:

This looks so good! Can you tell us about the pros/cons of a wool blend carpet vs nylon? Does wool require special cleaning or treatment? Is it more or less stain resistant? Thank you so much! Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!

  9. Carey says:

Do you have to vacuum it differently since it’s wool?

  10. Brittany says:

It looks so nice and cozy! I love having carpet in my bedroom. I have a very similar pattern in my bedroom and my guest bedroom. It’s so nice on my feet in the morning and I get a lot of compliments on the pattern! I think it surprises people that they like a wall-to-wall carpet!

  11. Wow! That’s beautiful. The design is so amazing! Thanks for sharing. :)

  12. Tanielle says:

Thank you for these beautiful resources! I live for all of your content! Stories, posts and blogs!! We are finishing our basement and everything you do is such an inspiration!!

  13. That’s a pretty big change! The texture and color of the new carpet makes the room look a lot calmer and more inviting.

  14. Robin says:

This room is all of my neutral dreams come true! It looks so lovely!

  15. Elisa says:

I would not paint the wood trim. It looks so beautiful as it is.

  16. Camille B says:

The carpet looks SO cozy, soft and bright!! The website photos do not do it justice!

  17. Camille B says:

Wow! This looks so cozy, soft and bright! The website image DOES NOT do it justice. It looks dingy in their fake render image … this is the complete opposite! Just goes to show … bring home samples!

  18. AlisonG says:

Does it make the wallpaper look cold? The photos do. Is it common to do cold and warm tones together in large quantities? Just curious.

    • Julia says:

I LOVE mixing warm and cool tones or warming up cool tones with warmth. The wallpaper is black and white so it can go either way!

      • AlisonG says:

Thanks for the reply and your comment about black and white. I did not know black was warm before doing a search about it. Happy Holidays to you.

  19. Laurel O says:

Love the idea of adding beams! White or even that soft warm wood tone of the floors you picked would be simply stunning!

  20. Hannah says:

Love the idea of a dusty blue or periwinkle for the trim. Just the right pop of color for a little girl’s room!

  21. Bety says:

I would love to know the previous owners mind set when buying the red carpet. So much more relaxing to look at now.

  22. Holly Hansen says:

Love it! The fact that you put 2 full sized (I assume) beds in there and took the plantation shutter off. I just moved into a new/old house with wide covered porches and tall narrow windows that the prior owner had lovingly put wide slat plantation shutter on, all in dark wood. I need as much natural light as i can get to took them off much to everyone’s shock. What do you think you will do for window treatments (if anything)?

  23. Lindsey F says:

Beautiful! A question on color theory.. I’ve always thought grey was a cool color, but you matched it beautifully with what you say is a warm carpet. Can we mix warm and cool colors? What are the rules!?

    • AlisonG says:

I was curious too, about the cool wallpaper and the warm carpet. Curious to know the answer.

      • Angelica says:

I love it. The carpet at your previous home inspired us and we got the same one from Lowe’s- but because it’s more tricky to install- it had to be torn out in several worms ans our hallway and redone after the first installation. The lines did not match up in several places along doorways and walls. Lowe’s redid it — and it was totally worth it. It looks so great. The low pile looks so much cleaner ans more luxurious.

    • Jenn says:

I think this is a warmer gray, with beige undertones. Grey can be cool too, with bluer tones. At least that feels like why it works so well!

    • Julia says:

The beds are definitely a warm gray which works great with the warmer carpet.

  24. Barbara says:

Such a pretty room. I love the slope of the walls. I look forward to seeing the area rug and roman shade you choose. It will be perfection.

  25. Liz says:

Ooh, Dusty Blue!! There’s a lot of grey/neutral in here already. That would be a fun pop of color.

  26. Des says:

In an upcoming post, can you address how you transition painted molding from one room to the next, i.e., interior door frames, etc? I have this issue & it looks so messy & unintentional although it is necessary. Looking for tips!

  27. Camille B says:

It looks SO different from the website sample. The website makes the carpet look kinda dingy? In your images it looks so soft, bright and cushy.

  28. Leena says:

The gray of the bed plays so nicely with the rug And I think monochromatic looks are so serene— perfect for a bedroom.

  29. Hannah says:

Wow! it looks so gorgeous! I’m definitely not going to get too attached since I am 100% confident that it would look gorgeous painted too, but the wood trim is actually kind of beautiful with the new finishes! Definitely not a bad place to pause and let all the gorgeous changes sink in. If Greta wants to swap she can have my room and I’ll take this one!

  30. Lisa says:

Where did you put the seam? do you ever have a hard time hiding or noticing it? Don’t notice it here or downstairs in you last home.

  31. Kathryn says:

Love the new look! Can you also share where you got all of your beddings? Thank you!!

  32. Sarah says:

This is looking SO amazing. We always talk about “kittens” and “alligators” (an analogy from a book, can’t remember which) that, when it comes to making changes to improve quality of life, removing alligators has bigger pay off than adding kittens. I think this applies to design too and that carpet was for sure your last alligator in this room. Everything else is kittens!

Appreciating that this might not be what YOU choose to do, would you ever leave the window trim wood and paint the baseboards? Looking at the room, that is my temptation and I am curious how crazy/’wrong’ that is.

  33. Anna says:

Wooohoo! Got to read this literally an hour before selecting 2,000 sq ft of carpet! Thank you!

  34. Tara says:

I don’t hate the wood trim? It’s giving me a storybook vibe with the wallpaper.

  35. Lara says:

Normally I would be in the status quo camp (cream or white) but now that you mentionned dusty blue I am so curious to see how a colour would look. Excited to follow along.

  36. Elizabeth says:

Loved reading this post. What a transformation. Love the new carpeting and that wallpaper. So pretty. Always love seeing you do your magic. Have a great week.

  37. Ellen says:

im thinking maybe paint the window trim the same bold green that is in the bathroom?? maybe?

  38. Kelly says:

Gorgeous! I could see the beds being gorgeous painted a contrasting fun color (a rusty red? Blue?), but I dig the tonal look you have going on as well!

  39. Bree says:

I am definitely on board for a dusty blue trim. I feel like it’s screaming paint me blue! Love the new carpet, Gretas room feel so calm and refreshing now!

  40. SheLikesToTravel says:

I would love a tutorial about how to paint trim right next to carpeting. I’m always afraid of getting paint on the carpet and am unsure how to proceed.

  41. Melissa says:

Wow! I think we all knew this would be a great transformation but I feel like you can really see how cute this room is now!

  42. Samantha says:

WOW what a change! It’s so much calmer in here with the new carpet.

I think a dusty blue trim would look so sweet in here! Whatever you decide to do will be lovely. Great post!!

  43. George says:

I personally I prefer wood floors but this looks great.
Why not paint wood trim the same gray as the beds?
