We start this episode with a small recap of our time in Seattle visiting the HGTV dream home (read more about that here) and then describe where and what our dream homes would be! They might surprise you!
Then we dive into a new segment, that we eventually decide to call “Cabin Log” (although Cabin of Green Gables was a close second! Ha!) where we’re telling a few more nitty gritty details of our adventures in renovating our new-to-us A-frame. While we love our cabin, it’s hasn’t all been views and a walk in the park. This week’s log story includes a whole lotta snow and a very expensive lesson.
For the main segment, we go through House Beautiful’s 16 Decor Trends that are Going to Be Hot for 2018 and weigh in on each.
• For starters, if they’re saying high contrast is out, why am I feeling like our dark accent wall in the playroom feels dated?
• And what do we really think about brass?
• Chris raps about the tone on tone trend.
• And although House Beautiful is telling us to go moodier (compared to what?!), there’s a big change we’re making in our house that goes in the opposite direction!
• And then, yeah, I mispronounce agate over and over and over. (I now realize, I was thinking of the word agave!) Here’s the link to Sarah Sherman Samuel’s Wallpaper line.
• Also, my 2018 goal to convert Preston to beige–who do I need to add to the list?
Can’t Get You Outta My Mind
Preston talks about launching his own personal development podcast, Next Level Life, last week and how he worked so hard to make it the number 1 podcast in his category–a goal he totally nailed!
Chris declares his love for Inca Corn. (I filled his stocking with these, and he ate them all in less than a week!)
I share a toy that we gifted to our daughter and nephew (both 7) that has helped so much with their anxiety, especially at bedtime. It’s called a Worry Eater and I couldn’t recommend it enough!

Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

The next project we’re checking off our 2023 project list is the mudroom! This used to be the laundry room until we built out a much bigger, better laundry room upstairs. So, in the meantime, this space has been exclusively Cricket’s room. Cricket will still have a special space here, but we’re transforming this dingy […]

What color is the front door and are soffits the same? Beautiful home! Oh and which Romabio color did you use? We are planning to limewash our brick exterior with Avorio white but can’t decide on a soffit color
Hi Chris and Julia!
Any idea where this limewashed tutor is from? Would love to see architect or builder site!
Thank you!

If you read through a lot of posts on House Beautiful, you’ll notice they contradict themselves constantly – lots of writers, not so much editorial control – but hey it’s a fun read! Just do what YOU like.
Agree 100%!
The agate wallpaper reminds me of Emily Henderson’s bed from her last master bedroom.
Loved this episode! Question on your bedroom refresh – will you be keeping the West Elm bed? We are considering the same one but are curious if your plans include staying with your current bed or going another route. Spoilers please. :)
We’re keeping our bed! I love it so much. It and the ceiling fan are the only things staying. Haha
Wahooo! Can’ t wait to read about all your plans! :)
I grew up (and my parents still live) just outside of a beautiful, small college town in North Carolina. They have no neighbors within sight, and are surrounded by fields and woods. The town itself is big enough to have everything you need, and Charlotte is a manageable 20 miles away. Their situation is pretty ideal. It has set me up for high home-situation/location standards for sure!
Sounds perfect!
Shout out to NC!! Born and raised. Great place to raise a family. We have it all, breathtaking mountains and beautiful beaches. Love the blog and the podcast!
The ads in your blog are so distracting. Your content is so great but sometimes I cannot tell which is yours and which are ads. Too bad your blog can’t just flow like other blogs and minimize all the ads.
The ads have gotten really smart lately. On a desktop, there are no in content ads–if that works better for you!
I have to say, I’m not a pink person, but I do like that agate wallpaper. It would be really pretty on the back of a bookshelf or hutch. And, for the record, I thought it was pronounced Ag-ate, which isn’t super pretty but sounds better than Ag-ut.
I’m so glad that you found a way to access the cabin in the winter, but I’m confused. When you say that you bought a shovel for the truck, do you mean that you bought a plow??
….yes.
Not to give any harsh judgments, but judgements should be judgments. :)
Hahaha!!! Excellent
Actually, “judgement/judgment” can be spelled either way, as I found out when I graded a seventh grade spelling test contrary to the spelling list in my students’ textbook :)
