With Spring here (or just around the corner–I can feel it!), it means there are a few areas of the home we’re ready to shed some layers or lighten up and bedding is a big one! I’ve talked about coverlets a lot before, which is already saying something (ha!) but they really are the perrrffect piece of bedding to transition with year round, and especially now as we transition from winter to spring.

I purchased this Matouk light blue, thick gauzy, stone-washed coverlet (comes in 3 other colors, too!) that feels like it’s been in the family for years (so, so good!) from Bloomingdale’s and not only is the color singing spring, but all the ways it can be styled make it completely practical, too. For instance:

1. If it’s still chilly where you are (ie if you’re anywhere close to me in freezing Idaho) maybe you are beckoning spring to come with colors but still need the warmth of a heavier duvet. Placing the coverlet on top of your existing duvet will instantly feel like all new bedding with minimal effort and make it look even more luxe, thick and dreamy!

2. And then let’s say one week, the weather starts teasing low 50s. Laying the coverlet across the bottom of your bed, allows easy access if you get chilly and need an extra layer, plus it looks so effortless and beautiful, too. Note: I love that the sizing of this coverlet (and all the bedding in Bloomingdale’s collection) is generous and luxurious. The king draped down just as a king size blanket should.

3. Now let’s say it’s full blown dreamy spring and the days are warm and the nights may get a little chilly. This is when you swap and make your thick, gauzy coverlet your main blanket and your duvet your backup! Tuck the coverlet around the whole mattress and place your folded duvet at the bottom of your bed. Are you seeing how this is the perfect system yet?

4. And the next thing you know, it’s summer and all you need is the light blanket.

We are loving the pop of light blue in our bedroom and wish we could gift everyone one of these perfect blankets. You can check out all of Bloomingdale’s luxury bedding line here–it’s one of those things that’s 100% worth spending a little more on (bedding and hardware!). The quality and feel is heavenly. Love this post – would absolutely love a post on the different ways you can style your pillows on a king size bed, especially with the minimum amount of pillows and cushions – hubby does not share my love for cushions ;)

    • Al says:

I know what you mean, my Husband doesn’t either. I went with a really large lumbar pillow, big impact with only one pillow to move! Emily Henderson did a post on lumbar pillow round ups that may help.

    Love this post!

We are in need of a new comforter, duvet, and sheet set…but there are so many options to choose from and I’m lost! Currently, my comforter seems too short (we have a queen bed) and flat, our sheets *always* shrink, and my duvet is a wrinkled mess with a comforter jumbled at the bottom. Do you have any tips for getting (and keeping) a luxury/hotel bed style?

  5. Jen says:

Have you tried Bloomingdales sheets? I have been shopping around for new sheets and the reviews seem mixed.. wondering if you had given them a try and what you think? Thanks! (My folks are in Island Park and it seems like spring might be a few more weeks/months away) :)

    Love this post!

I just wanted to say that I have been loving your posts lately. I am so sorry for the loss of your A-frame (I literally cried for you!) but if it’s any condolence at all – the ‘smaller’ more relateable posts of late are a nice change of pace. We don’t all have big renos going on so seeing some smaller changes that we can actually emulate in our home is fun for me. Just wanted you to know I am loving the new content :)

Always so envious of how you make your bed! since we got a king size mattress I’m struggling to make it looks comfy, and luxurious, and not a huge wrinkled mess.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
