All the schools have been cancelled in the area the past two days (except the University) because of extreme cold weather. -25 to be exact. Greta was thrilled, even if she only started school again after the break on Tuesday! Ha! I still had a doctor’s appointment to go to and the inside of the door at the office was complete ice. It’s freezing here. Like, so, so ridiculously cold you can’t touch the steering wheel or front door handle without a glove on.
We’ve taken the forced hibernation as an opportunity to get started cleaning out our storage room. We emptied everything out of the room and organized it into three gigantic piles of keep, toss and donate. Happily, the keep pile is the smallest. It already feels like a huge victory and we’re just getting started.
More fun things this week!
• We were named one of Domino’s top 10 best decorating blogs on a budget! We are in the best company with a lot of our other favorites and although the write-up isn’t 100% accurate (we’re definitely still working on our home!) seeing that pop-up on instagram and reading the whole article on their site was a highlight of my week!
• This kids’ bathroom in Caitlyn Wilson’s home is giving us major inspiration for our own girls’ bathroom renovation we’re planning right now. I love the pull out step stools, the basketweave tile behind the mirrors, and the fun patterned flooring! Her designs never disappoint!
• This deep green floral shirtdress is so. pretty. And it’s one of those dresses that can you can easily wear fall, winter and spring! I’m ordering it.
• I love nearly all of these (kind of fun) everyday new year resolution ideas! Switch from black to navy. Black is chic, but navy is soft.
• Did you get any great gifts over the holiday you didn’t even ask for? I always feel like those are the best kinds. Chris got me this coat for Christmas and it’s my favorite, favorite gift. It’s warm, and a little unique with the fastener at the top and I’ve gotten compliments every time I’ve worn it. I got him this All-Clad 8qt. perforated multi-pot (I even got his initials monogrammed on it!) and he has used it every day! When he opened it, he said, “You must really, really love me. You actually got me another pot?!”
• 10 Simple Things to Make you Happier At Home. Yes, yes, yes!
Stay warm this weekend!
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

Omg, I got that coat too! It’s an immediate confidence boost when I slip it on to go out the door because I just feel so chic. And I also get constant compliments on it!
Love the 10 simple things and that bathroom!
As a native Minnesotan, I feel your pain about the cold. Hope you are all staying safe and warm!
Best,
Kelly
p.s. that coat is freaking adorable!
You were featured in AT! Although it was a bit of a strange article…

Love that coat! I’ve been shopping for a coat since recently moving up north. Do you mind sharing what size you got? I am also 6 foot tall, but slender, and feel we might wear a similar size. Also, we’re the sleeves long enough for you? Tall girl problems ;) love your blog (& podcast!)
I got a small and it’s a perfect fit! Sleeves are long enough–the most pleasant surprise!
Sooo glad you asked about size! I was going to as well since I’m a slender 5″11 and cannot find a woman’s coat with long enough sleeves which is making me batty.
Wow! I can’t even imagine that level of cold. I wish I could give you some of our heat and humidity and take some of your cold and snow! From sunny Queensland (Australia).
My oldest baby just started classes at that university this week and said that by the time she walked to her first class on Thursday, she was crying and almost thought she wasn’t going to make it. It felt like glass was cutting her legs it was so cold. It’s nuts. (Oh, and I love your blog!!)
Bbbrrrr sounds like you guys are taking weather cues from my neck of the woods.
Hang in there!
The article is AMAZING. Thank you for sharing!
Wow — That coat is gorgeous! I love when husbands know your style and can pick great things for you! Last year for mothers day, my hubs bought me 2 great outfits, that I wore all spring/summer long! Back to the coat– is it nice and warm? A few other blogs I follow live in the south, so all their clothes are more geared for warmer climates — I am in Colorado, so our high yesterday was 9 degrees, but with windchill it was in the negatives! SO — I am looking for a warmer coat right now!
And, congrats on the Domino mention — I love following you guys!
Congrats on your Domino recognition! You certainly deserve it. I’ve gotten so much design inspiration from you.
Also, I have total bathroom envy from above! The floors are amazing.
Dude. That “10 Simple Things” article? I almost didn’t even click on it, but it ended up being my favorite part of this post! So right on. And congrats on the Domino nod! I’m totally annoyed on your behalf that they imply that you’re not doing any new projects in your current house…but still, very cool. :)
We have the same weather right now and thank goodness school isn’t cancelled. They have had inside recess all week so the kids and teachers are going a bit batty.
I LOVE that apartment therapy article. So good. My major New Years resolution is to minimize and simplify my life. I love the 10 simple, everyday things they suggest. Gold.
Kind of random, but I really like it when you post fashion/clothes you’re into. I feel like I typically enjoy someone’s fashion choices when I like their decorating style. But, the kicker for me is that i am tall too, and a few of the fashion bloggers I’ve checked out are like 5’2. Fun to have another tall girl’s thoughts on good clothes.
Your coat is yummy :) And the pot………….All-Clad is my dream brand! I love his reaction to the gift!
Loving your Instagram feed! Do you use your iPhone camera? If so what app do you use to make ur pictures so beautifully perfect??
I actually mostly use my real camera. But I love the VSCO app for editing all my photos before posting them on Instagram. I talk more about that in this post.
We are so cold in Boise too. It’s the worst in over 30 years!! But you seem hit even harder there! Yikes! Stay safe and warm. Congrats on Domino, I totally agree :)
