10 Really Good Looking High Chairs that are also Safe and Functional (and convertible!)

We have had the Ikea Antilop High Chair for 8 years now–the same $20 high chair has almost got us through all three of our girls. And before recently, it has served us perfectly. Even though the tray is impossible to take off and there’s quite a bit of room between the tray and little baby bodies (which often translates to more food for our dog–she’s not complaining), it has been simple to put babies in and out and wipe down. However, our third child, at 10 months old cannot be contained in this high chair and my momma heart can’t handle it! It has lap straps that she can wiggle out of, and twice this week we have had to catch her before she toppled completely out of it. So now we’re on the hunt for something with a 5 point harness that is good looking and will transition with her into toddlerdom, too.
We shared three that we were considering on our Instagram Stories, but so many people offered so much feedback (that we still haven’t decided!) and also wanted to see all the ones we were considering–here are the top 10 on our list, in order of price (from least expensive to most expensive)!

We actually purchased the Skip Hop Tuo (#3) after so many of you loved it–but then several of you said it didn’t feel as stable as you would have liked. Part of me thought, “It HAS to be more stable than our $20 Ikea one!” then I cancelled the order because I started looking at all the other options and got overwhelmed again–ha! The Tripp Trapp didn’t make our top 3 list, but it was highly recommended by a lot of people, although some said it was overrated. I prefer Stokke’s Baby Steps chair (#9) looks-wise over the Tripp Trapp but I’m not sure I can swallow the price tag. Which means the Bloom (#10) is definitely out of the budget, although it’s completely dreamy and I love that it can swivel 360 degrees! The feedback on #5, the OXO was almost split down the center. Everyone loved it, but a lot of people included the caveat that they also found it difficult to clean.
We have to make a decision this week! ASAP! I really don’t think you could go wrong with any of these, but feel free to sound off with your experience in the comments!

We have the Joovy Nook, in black. And I loved it…I love that the leatherette was perfectly wipeable and always retained a clean appearance (not worn) and the padded little arm rests were bonus. Liked the the tray has a removable cover for quick pick ups. And that it folds flat!
I know it isn’t in your top ten (which may mean you have looked into it and don’t like it), but we really loved our Nuna Zaaz high chair. SO easy to clean, and I liked the look of it too.
We have two Tripp Trapps, and bought both from Craigslist for around $100 each. I have zero regrets and would’ve bought them full price if I needed to. Since our toddler no longer needs the harness we often use it as a spare chair and I really like that it’s so stable, even when she sits in it backward (much to my dismay!).
Also, my friend from Sweden said that basically every kid has one there, and they use it until they go to college—after they outgrow the need for it in the dining room, they use it as a desk chair!
We have two of the Boon Flair high chairs and they have held up great. A friend gave us their OXO Tot Sprout but it started to peel so badly that we sold it on the neighborhood page and bought another Flair chair for our newest babe.
We have 3 Tripp Trapps (#8) – the 7 and 4 year-olds still use theirs so we got another one for the baby (or really each baby has inherited the 1st one since it has the matching baby seat). There has been no escape. You adjust it as they grow. It is well worth the money.
We love the Tripp Trapp, and skipped the tray so she’s right up to the table with us (we figured if it didn’t work for us to go sans tray we could always buy it later; we haven’t missed it yet). Our daughter is our first, so the price tag was less intimidating thinking how much use (another kid and/or adults!) we can get out of it, especially because it fits in so well with our style. You’ve got a lot of solid options!
Tripp Trapp! We own 2, one for 8 years and the other one for 4 and we still use it. We have always made it a point to eat as a family at our dining table starting as soon as they were able to sit up. They used it as toddlers so no need for additional boosters. I think it helps that their feet are not dangling and have a place for their feet. I have found it easy to clean. Our oldest now use it at our homework nook which has a countertop height table. After all the meals and projects at our table they still look and feel solid. The look of the chair work for us as we have mid century table and pretty casual minimal decor.
I like the Fisher Price Space Saver kind because it just straps to a regular chair and isn’t a separate piece of furniture. Good for smaller homes. Comes with shoulder straps and tray gets close to baby.
We have #10! I found one new in the box on craigslist for $200. It reclines all the way back, so you can put very new babies in it and let them join the family for dinner. Now that he’s a little bigger, we also like that it swivels 360°. No matter where I am in the kitchen, he can watch me cook. The only thing we don’t like are the wheels. They’rea joke, completely nonfunctional. I have to pick the chair up and carry it from the dining room to the kitchen.
We have #4. We are very happy with it. Our big-for-her age 2 year old is still using it. It’s not hard to clean and it is solid and stable (my biggest concern, since I’m a pediatrician, was safety). It doesn’t take up a lot of room and looks so much nicer than the plasticky ones.
I have the Baby Bjorn, it’s very sleek, a breeze to clean. My 7 month old is a bit chubby, the tray has 2 settings and I pulled it further out for him. You need to press and turn a dial underneath the tray, can be difficult sometimes but the great part I love about it, is that the tray stays attached and it also has a removeable insert (I might find the sides a bit shallow once he spills some food or moves it around) also, watch out for the legs, they flare out and I have almost tripped more than once but overall I still like it allot! Good choice!
We have the skip hop tuo and love it. Right now we use it for our 2 1/5 year old (and have a baby on the way). She climbs in and out of it herself (at her insistance and using the foot rest for footing) and it’s never tipped, and I have never felt like it wasn’t stable and sturdy. I find it easy to clean, and I love the small footprint, not to mention it’s nod to mid-century style. Good luck with your decision!
We have had the 4moms high chair for the past 11 months. There is no easier chair to clean!! There are zero grooves for food to get caught in and the material simply doesn’t allow food to get crusted on. The magnetic tray is incredibly easy to remove and clean and the removable liner is a godsend. It is also insanely safe. My girl does full on dance routines, shakes, leans and throws herself around in there and it never ever moves. HOWEVER- 1) the bottom strap that the harness attaches to is very short. So if your girl gets big fast it may pose a problem (lots of people complain about this on buy buy baby reviews). And 2) it is super comfortable and easy to slouch in so your girl will never learn to hold herself up with good posture while she is eating. ONLY the Tripp trapp and keekaroo will do that. Ordered a Tripp trapp recently bc I just can’t stand to watch her schlump during mealtime anymore. That being said, it sure is nice to feel safe leaving her in the 4moms while I prepare other food on the other side of the kitchen without worry.
Great choice! We have the baby Bjorn highchair too and LOVE it!!! It doesn’t take up a lot of room and it’s cute!! My daughter is almost 2 and it’s still perfect!
We have the Joovy #6 and love it. My mom has it at her house too. The one-handed swing out function is the best!
Look up the Keekaroo high chair! Very similar to the Stokke, but WAY less expensive. I actually like the way it looks better. We used one through our 3 kids and it was super easy to clean, contained our one escape artist, and was a great transition chair for when babes are done with the highchair, but not quite ready to sit on a regular height chair.
Yes!!! We have the keekaroo chair and it is fantastic. So easy to clean since the pads all just slide on and the tray fits in the dishwasher!
I have to say the Tripp Trapp is pretty great…adults can sit on it once you remove the high chair pieces. We had one in the office I worked at and most people gravitated toward sitting in that over the regular office chairs. But…totally understandable if you don’t prefer the look haha!
I don’t have experience with any of these, but from the pic I think I would trip on #3’s legs. Too bad #10 is so expensive!

Long time reader, first time commenter and had to weigh in on this issue. We’ve had the Baby Bjorn highchair (#6) on your list and LOVED it.
Overall it’s super easy to clean, the top part of the tray comes off and you have both a buckle system as well as a turn handle to lock the tray in place. The tray itself is adjustable so you can make it as snug as you want, while also acting as a deterrent to squirmy babes trying to Houdini their way out.
We used this seat from the time our daughter was 6 months until she was 27 months (and she’s leggy like your girls) – she still fit into the weight requirements but we finally had to downgrade to a booster seat because she was starting to look uncomfy with her legs dangling.

We have it also and LOVE the look. Our kitchen table can be seen from our front door and living room so I really wanted something as unobtrusive as possible. The tray is removable and the seat is all one piece so it’s easy to clean.. I don’t think it has a 5 point harness though, unless I’m missing something? The lap restraints paired with the position of the tray have kept our 13 month old snug so far but she is starting to be able to arch her back over the top of the seat so we’ll see!
The BabyBjorn is a great choice! And it is often $159 in Amazon instead of the $299 you listed. Wait a few days and the price will be lower for sure!!!!
We love baby bjorn!! It folds down and can go in trunk of car easily to go to grandmas or wherever. The tray folds down and it can be used in place of a booster chair pushed right up to the table. It’s easy to clean because there is no fabric. We eat outside a lot and often just hose it down. It also has the tiniest footprint and looks amazing in our black and white kitchen. Definitely go for it!!
I would 100% recommend this highchair. I found it for sale on target.com but still couldn’t believe I spent over $200 on a highchair. I justified the cost stating that we would return it if we didn’t love everything about it. We say daily that it was worth EVERY PENNY! We love it and so does my 7 month old daughter. My niece (who is 18months) also uses it and fits with plenty of room to grow. I love that it blocks food from spilling onto her lap. I literally take it to the back yard and hose it off and it looks brand new. So stylish and easy to fold up and store away if we don’t want to look at it. Go for it! So worth it.

Chiming in to say that you cannot beat the Babybjorn’s tray that clicks *right* up to baby’s belly. No food slips down onto her lap!

Everyone we know who bought them actually kept it. It blends in really well with the regular furniture. My sister in law still has hers and the kids are 16 and 11.
Just buy the one without the set. Then it’s 250.
We had the OXO sprout chair and is was such a pain to clean and I ended up buying two replacement trays over 4 years because it would mold inside the tray and I couldn’t clean it. (YUCK!) Also, all of the cushions started to peel and I had to buy replacements. I would not recommend this high chair. For the price, I feel like it should hold up better. Good luck!

We have the stokke baby steps and absolutely love it! It was worth every penny in my opinion! We use the tray frequently, but often pull up the chair and harness to the table as my 18 month old seems to have more patience at meal time when he’s sitting right there with us. I’ve even told a friend I’ll buy another one for another baby because I don’t want to move the toddler out of it any time soon. We have the white and it cleans up like a dream with only water!! Many a curry have hit the tray and I’ve thought we would have some sort of stain but nope! Like another reader commented the silicone dishes do not cling to the textured surface. Our only issue has been the back legs are at a different angle than the front legs and both my husband and I have miscalculated the angle and stumbled a bit, oops!
I remember putting the high chair in a shower and just letting hot water run down it… trying to get them clean. I’m a fan of the chair based kind. It doesn’t take up so much room it’s less expensive and it has a five point harness. Smaller item less to clean.
I only have personal experience with the Stokke Tripp Trapp so let me tell you all about it!
It was the chair I used as a baby 30+ years ago and that very chair is still in use at my parents house today for the grandchildren. In fact my parents have purchased new ones as THE baby gift for the grandchildren so I can also tell you the new ones are just as good. While there are a lot of good highchairs what the tripp trapp excels at is stability and adjustability.
Both the seat and the footrest can be adjusted up or down (see the grooves?) as the child grows, meaning it´s great for toddlers, prechoolers and everyone else. In fact you can switch the seat and footrest to make it usable for adults. I used mine as a desk chair troughout my childhood.
The stability is the best I´ve seen in any high chair, it´s stable enough for a toddler to climb in and out of on their own without worry. In fact I just recently saw a 3 year old hang of the back of it screaming without the chair budging :)
As an added bonus for me as a short person, the solid wood construction means it can double as stepladder.
Just chiming in to say that if you’re a buy it for life kind of person you can’t beat the Tripp Trapp. My mother-in-law had three sent over from Germany 30 years ago and they still look great and are used by the grandkids (ages 6 months to 6 years) today.
We got one for our son and we love it. It’s so easy to clean and he can’t knock it over or escape from it. We LOVE that it pulls right up to the table so he can really eat with the family. It is one of our very favorite baby purchases.
Chiming in from Europe, where the Tripp Trapo has been THE chair for generations. I sat in one as a baby. I actually bought three of them second hand and in great condition. The hold forever! When I asked my now 8 year old if he wanted to give up his, so the baby brother due in July could get his, he said no way! So I guess we’ll have four of these around our table soon. I love that the kids always sit at the right height and their feet aren’t dangling in the air, which is bad for blood circulation and happens if you “graduate” a toddler to a normal chair.
I love our TrippTrapp for our 8 month old. I know it’s not in your top 3 but it’s worked like a dream for us. Plus you can customize the colors and seat cushion, and really fit it to your decor. I’m excited we’ll get to use it for the next several years.

You can purchase a 5 point harness from Amazon. Why not modify your current high chair? or repurpose an old wooden one? I just know that these things are used so briefly, I would rather spend the money saved on a new pillow. :-)

I don’t see anyone mentioning it below, but we have #7 4Moms one. The magnetic tray to snap in place is awesome and I know that they sell plates and bowls that magnetically attach to the tray but they were too weak to use for our very active boy. The 5 point harness was great to use when he was smaller but around when he turned 12 months, we removed it because it was more comfortable to him, so you can easily make it a lap harness too. I’ve never once doubted the safety of the chair and have let him sit in it without the tray or table in front of him.
Clean up is great! There is a removable tray liner that you can use in the dishwasher or wash by hand, or if you are lazy like us, using some lysol wipes. I’ve taken the big pieces off and have given them a good scrub down a few times but most of the time we clean it up with the wipes and everything comes right off.
The ONLY downside for us has been that the non-slip silicon mats do not stick to either the tray liner or the tray itself because it is not a smooth texture. But that is some serious first world problems since our boy loves to dump his food. Hope any of this helped!
We recently bought the 4 moms as well after doing a ton of research and reading a lot of reviews on all of these chairs. We haven’t used it yet because our guy is only 3.5 months but it seemed to have th best reviews and a the key thing that sold it for us were: small footprint in the kitchen, attractive looking, redesigned straps from first generation so will work well with tall babies, is adjustable in height and it sits a little higher than some chairs so good for feeding at the counter or being fed by a very tall daddy, easy peasy to clean no nooks for food to get stuck in just wipe and go, easy to remove and flat tray so can get get baby in and out easily, very very sturdy. Hope this helps! Since you and Chris and presumably Polly are tall, don’t forget to consider the height of the chair! I almost bought the Stokke Steps (I’m a shorty) until my very tall hubby saw it and said it would kill his back to hunch over the chair!
Just chiming in to say that we have the Joovy and I actually really like it. My daughter is 10 months old as well, and it does a good job keeping her contained. It’s comfortable for her, and as all of the reviews state the swing-arm tray is AMAZING. So easy to get her in and out. As with anything with that kind of pad, it’s not as easy as something like the Antilope to clean, but we generally just take it outside and spray it off with the hose when it gets bad. The tray and armrests come apart super easily to wash in the sink when needed. I wouldn’t say it’s the most attractive high chair I’ve ever seen, but it’s not offensive, and we live in a small space so being able to fold it up is a lifesaver.
We have the Tripp Trapp and I like it a lot. But my now 20 month old doesn’t want to sit in it anymore- she wants to sit in the grown-up dinner chairs instead, so currently it’s mostly going unused, which is a shame because we bought the thing so that she could grow into it! It’s not the prettiest high chair, but I really liked that even adults could use it for extra seating.

We’ve used #6 for all our girls (3 girls too) and loved it. Tray is easy to remove and clean. Tray is adjustable so it can be moved closer to baby when they are young and the out as they get bigger. Super easy to wipe down and very sturdy!
We have had the stokke baby steps for 20+ months for our daughter, and we still love it. We have two golden retrievers and really appreciate how sturdy the base of the chair is, its never been knocked over during their horseplay ;) Would definitely recommend!

We had the same problem with the ikea chair. We just needed something where the try could be closer so she couldn’t get her knee up.
We have the Skip Hop Tuo and I don’t love it. It’s not easy to clean, the tray is small, and the removable part of the tray is so easy to pop off that my 18 month old has been doing it for 3-4 months now (the dog gets plenty of food with that move! ). It is pretty but if I could do it again I would get the Joovy Nook. It’s what my parents have (they watch my son two days a week) and it’s so much easier to clean and the tray is way more functional.

I have the Baby Bjorn! (and i searched loooong and hard for a good high chair, they’re all over priced or ugly!) My girl is 13 months old and we love love love it! It is SUPER easy to clean and wipe down (the top tray is removable) , is good looking, and it’s great for a smaller kitchen. it does not have a large footprint which we love. It doesn’t have wheels but easily slides across our wood floors (without scratching!). I cannot believe this high chair is not more popular. I paid around $160 for it from Target.
I did not know anyone who owned this highchair, nor did i see it person, i just took a gamble and was so glad when it came!!!
This! Love this high chair, still using for our 16 month old and I have seen a 3 year old sit in it comfortably! It’s seriously the best! It is not a 5 point harness, just a waist buckle, but the tray is snug against baby’s belly so they CANNOT wiggle out! There is literally no room, which also lean very little food, if any, will land on the seat. This one is by far the best!
We have the Bjorn too and love it. It’s great for small spaces and folds up if necessary. The buckle/seat fits snuggly but with space to grow, which limits how much food gets in baby, and as others have said, wipes up very easily. The main downside is price, here in Canada it’s $400. Thankfully we received ours as a gift.
I love the Tripp Trapp. Our baby’s 8.5 months, and a grabber. She’s eating a mix of purees and finger foods, and it is a MESS, but the TT is easy to clean. The white’s great because you can see if you’ve missed a spot. We put ours on a leather mat to save our rug. We just wipe all the crumbs onto the mat and our dog takes care of the rest. I’m hoping that the TT does indeed “grow” with her and we get many more years of use out of it.
Here’s a $75 option that we have and generally like. One cool thing is that as the seat converts, the leg pieces are stored in the base of the seat.

I know the green is, um, vibrant, but both of the green pieces on the seat and the tray are removable, which leaves you with just a white high chair.
We have the Stokke Steps and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. I think your price tag includes the bouncer which you don’t need and would take about 100 bucks off the price tag. Our daughter is 2.5 and at all table activities, she climbs right in to join us. Can’t say enough good things.
We have the Stokke Tripp Trapp (2 actually – one at our house and one at grandma’s). It was a hand-me-down from my SIL who used it with all three of her boys, the oldest is now 16. What I love about it is that as the kids get older you can adjust the bottom foot rest so their feet don’t just hang there. My son (3 1/2) finds it far more comfortable than a traditional chair where he doesn’t have anywhere to rest his feet. Once you take the 5 point harness off it’s also very useful as a step ladder for the kids to reach stuff and I find it’s far sturdier than some of the other options. We are transitioning our son out of it so our daughter can use it and he’s been pushing back so much since he likes it better than a regular chair that we are considering just bringing the one down from grandmas to use with our daughter. It’s pricey, but SO sturdy and well built. The straps can be kind of a pain to clean sometimes if you let them get super grimy thought.
I know nothing about it, but I love the look of number 4.

I love our Tripp Trapp. It is so easy to clean (literally just Windex) and we slide our baby right up to the table. It also has a tray if table real estate is at a premium. I like how adjustable it is, especially the height of the foot rest. We have white with an orange infant seat and it looks great in our dining room, too!
I’d recommend buying a $10 five-point harness from amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Lanyarco-Universal-Stroller-Children-Pushchair/dp/B01HEXS2I2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1529417000&sr=8-5&keywords=5+point+harness), drilling a couple of extra holes in your current high chair, and installing the 5 point harness there. It would only take a few minutes and save you a LOT of money!

We have the baby bjorn and LOVE IT–the footprint is small, it cleans like a dream and it’s super easy to get our 10 month old in and out of. Most of our friends have the Phil and Ted’s and it’s a fantastic chair–the footprint was just too big for us (we are still in our condo for another year or so until we move into a house). Don’t be sad about the bloom price tag–that thing is HUGE.
Why not just get a seat that can strap onto one of your dining room chairs (such as the Fisher Price one)? It may not be the aesthetic look you really want, but how much longer will she reasonably be in a high chair? Plus, it stores easily. Just a thought!
She’s not old enough to really be pushed up to the table (she’ll grab everything!) And we often fill up ask the chairs at our dining table (at least twice a week) with dinner guests, so for us it’s just not practical. Also, our other girls stayed in a high chair until 2+ and then went to a booster so I feel like we still have a good long time, especially if we get a convertible one.
The fisher price ones have a tray! We have used it for all three of our boys and yes, it gets gross but it has worked just fine!

I thought for sure someone would mention our favorite high chair, so I didn’t message you on stories, but it didn’t make this list! We love the Boon Flair (https://www.amazon.com/Boon-Flair-Highchair-Orange-White/dp/B001DLJVPA?th=1) – the colored seats are interchangeable, so you don’t have to stick with the orange and it is SO easy to wipe clean. My selling feature on it was the fact that it’s on wheels. We wheel it up to the table for dinner time, and then wheel it out of the way when we’re done. Also, the footprint of it is small – I feel like with a lot of high chairs, the legs stick out so far that you surely stub your toe a time or two, not to mention they take up so much dang room (see #1-3 on your list). The wheels on the Boon Flair lock for safety AND there’s a five point harness. ALSO, the colored tray snaps right off and you can wash it with the dishes. 9 times out of 10, that’s the only part that got really messy anyway, the rest can get a quick wipe and be good. Anyway, sorry to add to the confusion – ha!
I have 4 kids, plus have done daycare for 8 years, and I’ve never owned a high chair. I feel like they are a big waste of space and aren’t cost-effective considering how little they get used.
Now, I know they aren’t as lovely, but I’ve always used Fisher Price Healthy Care booster seat strapped to our regular chairs. The little ones can sit right at the table with us, which I think helps them settle down for mealtimes.

We had the Tuo, weren’t particularly happy with it as the seat and tray are kind of small, it’s not as easy to clean as we originally thought and yet the actual chair takes up so much space. There was a recall because the legs could fall off and we took advantage to get our money back instead of a replacement chair and switch to a regular booster seat. Our little one was about 13mo around then but it worked better at keeping him contained since he felt part of the table during meal time.
I own number one and love it! It’s easy to clean and is very stable. The only thing is the legs do take up more space due to the way they are shaped. Myself, and other family members, have tripped over them several times. So I would definitely consider this if you don’t have a lot of space to maneuver around it. Hope this helps.
Love the poppy too. On my second kid. It is so easy to clean when you can put the tray and seat in dishwasher. But true about legs. Luckily we have a big dining room so it’s nit a big deal.
