When we were living in our first home in Utah 9 years ago, we have a photo of me laying on a canopy bed in a Crate & Barrel store, dreaming away. The reality was, a canopy bed wasn’t going to work with our barely 8′ ceilings and the same story applied in our last house. So when we bought this house with its 9 foot ceilings, I started thinking about a canopy bed again almost immediately and then I couldn’t stop thinking about one and then I found the one of my dreams and now it’s finally here!!! (But there’s quite a backstory).

Isn’t it beautiful?! Like I mentioned, a canopy bed has been in my future for YEARS now, but even when we moved here, we had quite the obstacle because even though our house had 9′ ceilings, our bedroom had a tray ceiling that made it under 8′ around the edges!! Foiled again!

The removal of the tray ceiling in our room was a part of phase 1 of our renovation so we could heighten our ceilings and we subsequently added more stone to the fireplace, over grout it and added 2 large 8′ doors to a new balcony where the former windows were.

The room was READY for a bed! We sold our previous bed with our last house, so since we moved, we have been just sleeping on our Sleep Number mattress’s base. We really wanted a canopy bed with a large upholstered headboard. After having an upholstered headboard since being married, and then suddenly NOT having one since moving in June, we realized how much we loved having a soft backing to lean against at night while working or reading or watching a show.

I found this one, THE one, over black friday on One Kings Lane. It was on super sale for just over $2000 but that was still more than we wanted to spend on a bed. So I kept looking around and I just couldn’t stop thinking about it! On December 1st, Chris reminded me that if it’s the one, I shouldn’t settle for something else. To just get it! It would be worth it! 

I knew it was worth it when I was willing to wait another 10-12 weeks for it to arrive. A mid-February arrival seemed so far away but we kept busy. (understatement of the year. haha) We got the magical call while we were in Arizona a couple weeks ago that the bed was being delivered. They were supposed to put it together so I gave one of our employees the instructions on where its going and what was expected and she called me 30 minutes later, “It won’t fit in your room.” “What do you mean?”
“The entire headboard and footboard were all shipped as a huge piece and they got it in the front door but it won’t fit in your room.”
“I don’t….what?! Are there screws? There has to be screw somewhere.”
“There’s no screws. What should I have them do.”
“Just…well……hmm…”

I could hear in the background the delivery guys saying that we could just refuse delivery but my heart broke at the thought so we decided to have them just keep it in the entry and we’d look at it when we got home.

Sure enough, they attached, covered and wood filled the entire headboard piece and footboard piece together and SHIPPED THEM LIKE THAT. They were nearly 8′ tall and we REALLY didn’t want to cut the bed apart. Chris came up with a plan to hoist the bed up on our bedroom balcony and bring it through the new 8′ tall doors.

He and my dad leaned 2x4s against the side of the house and pulled the bed up to the roof and then MIRACULOUSLY safely into our bedroom where Chris and I put the rest of it together.

After ALLLLL of the waiting and work and troubleshooting and money, Chris asked me if I felt like it was worth it. And without hesitation, I said, yes! And he said, “Me, too.” :)

We LOVE our new bed that is never leaving our room (so we better love it. haha!). And the funny thing is, our sleep number base is just resting inside the frame–so we’re not actually sleeping on anything different at all. But it feels so different. I love the encompassing feeling of a canopy bed and the big headboard of this one adds an additional cozy factor.

The warm wood is so pretty against the fireplace and our gray trim. The vision is coming together!!
