When we were living in our first home in Utah 9 years ago, we have a photo of me laying on a canopy bed in a Crate & Barrel store, dreaming away. The reality was, a canopy bed wasn’t going to work with our barely 8′ ceilings and the same story applied in our last house. So when we bought this house with its 9 foot ceilings, I started thinking about a canopy bed again almost immediately and then I couldn’t stop thinking about one and then I found the one of my dreams and now it’s finally here!!! (But there’s quite a backstory).

SOURCES: Canopy Bed, Nightstands (discontinued, similar), Lamps,  Duvet (gray), Area Rug, Olive Tree, Wall Sconces, Fireplace makeover tutorial, Paint Color: Alabaster by Sherwin Williams, Trim Color: Lamp Room Gray by Farrow & Ball,  Floors: Stuga Studio Ingrid, Doors by Pella)

Isn’t it beautiful?! Like I mentioned, a canopy bed has been in my future for YEARS now, but even when we moved here, we had quite the obstacle because even though our house had 9′ ceilings, our bedroom had a tray ceiling that made it under 8′ around the edges!! Foiled again!

The removal of the tray ceiling in our room was a part of phase 1 of our renovation so we could heighten our ceilings and we subsequently added more stone to the fireplace, over grout it and added 2 large 8′ doors to a new balcony where the former windows were.

The room was READY for a bed! We sold our previous bed with our last house, so since we moved, we have been just sleeping on our Sleep Number mattress’s base. We really wanted a canopy bed with a large upholstered headboard. After having an upholstered headboard since being married, and then suddenly NOT having one since moving in June, we realized how much we loved having a soft backing to lean against at night while working or reading or watching a show.

I found this one, THE one, over black friday on One Kings Lane. It was on super sale for just over $2000 but that was still more than we wanted to spend on a bed. So I kept looking around and I just couldn’t stop thinking about it! On December 1st, Chris reminded me that if it’s the one, I shouldn’t settle for something else. To just get it! It would be worth it!

I knew it was worth it when I was willing to wait another 10-12 weeks for it to arrive. A mid-February arrival seemed so far away but we kept busy. (understatement of the year. haha) We got the magical call while we were in Arizona a couple weeks ago that the bed was being delivered. They were supposed to put it together so I gave one of our employees the instructions on where its going and what was expected and she called me 30 minutes later, “It won’t fit in your room.” “What do you mean?”
“The entire headboard and footboard were all shipped as a huge piece and they got it in the front door but it won’t fit in your room.”
“I don’t….what?! Are there screws? There has to be screw somewhere.”
“There’s no screws. What should I have them do.”
“Just…well……hmm…”

I could hear in the background the delivery guys saying that we could just refuse delivery but my heart broke at the thought so we decided to have them just keep it in the entry and we’d look at it when we got home.

Sure enough, they attached, covered and wood filled the entire headboard piece and footboard piece together and SHIPPED THEM LIKE THAT. They were nearly 8′ tall and we REALLY didn’t want to cut the bed apart. Chris came up with a plan to hoist the bed up on our bedroom balcony and bring it through the new 8′ tall doors.

He and my dad leaned 2x4s against the side of the house and pulled the bed up to the roof and then MIRACULOUSLY safely into our bedroom where Chris and I put the rest of it together.

After ALLLLL of the waiting and work and troubleshooting and money, Chris asked me if I felt like it was worth it. And without hesitation, I said, yes! And he said, “Me, too.” :)

We LOVE our new bed that is never leaving our room (so we better love it. haha!). And the funny thing is, our sleep number base is just resting inside the frame–so we’re not actually sleeping on anything different at all. But it feels so different. I love the encompassing feeling of a canopy bed and the big headboard of this one adds an additional cozy factor.

The warm wood is so pretty against the fireplace and our gray trim. The vision is coming together!!

One Kings Lane has since pulled the bed from their site and then RE-added it (!!!) with a disclaimer: The largest unassembled piece is 84″W x 12″D x 74″H (I have a feeling other people probably ran into the same issue of GETTING the bed in their room!). And it’s also currently 25% off!!!! You can check it out right here or at number 15 below. If you love it as much as I did and do–then where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Hi there, getting the same bedd delivered this week! Praying it fits! How high is the Bottom base? Trying to figure out what size foundation and mattress to get so it’s not too high? Yours looks like the perfect height! Looking at Saatva and I have to figure out if I want the base to be 4.75 or 8.75″ and the mattress is either 11.5 or 14.5. Was leaning toward 14.5 mattress, and 4.75 base. Thanks!

  2. Linda says:

Your Dad is seriously the best! Are you going to actually put a canopy on the canopy bed?

  3. Angela says:

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sold on the fireplace until this bed! It ties it all together and I’m starting to see where you’re going. I love it all.

  4. Carmen says:

The colors in the room and how they work together are so good.

  5. Katherine says:

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!!! In other news, i have a canopy bed to add to your roundup. The Architecture Bed at Room and Board!! I’ve had it for several years now and LOVE IT!! It’s solid steel and has such clean lines. It’s available in a natural black steel (which is what I have) or they have tons of powdercoat colors and it comes in 2 platform heights!! https://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/bedroom/beds/architecture-bed

    • Julie says:

Katherine-I don’t have the canopy bed but I do have another steel bed from Room & Board and I adore it. I’ve moved three times since purchase and it snaps together quickly and does not make a sound (unlike beds I’ve owned from Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn), and it is seriously sturdy. If I have time in an Earthquake, I’m crawling under it, lol.

  6. Patricia says:

We bought a queen size steel frame box springs to go with our mattress for our upstairs master bedroom and could not fit it up our narrow steep stairs in our 1930 Tudor revival house. I understand your pain. The mattress had enough bendiness so we could maneuver it up. The box springs waited another year leaning on a wall on the main floor until we opened up the roof to build a dormer for our new bathroom upstairs. Then the crew handed it up through the studs and we had a bed upstairs! There it stayed as we replaced the mattress several times over the next 30 years. When we sold the house, we hired a handyman with a Sawzall to cut it up and haul it to the dump.
    Live and learn.

  7. JL says:

What a beautiful retreat. I would love to see the fireplace white-washed or gray-washed, but that’s just personal preference. Can’t wait for the master bath reno. I see you’ve opted for a separate tub and shower area vs. a wet room. I personally love the current trend where the bathroom floor and/or wall materials flow directly into the shower for a clean, seamless look (instead of having a different floor, different wall tiles, plus various patterns and inlays on top of those!). I’ll be watching with popcorn and a glass of wine!

  8. Jennifer C. says:

This made me laugh so hard…we had to remove our bedroom window and hire movers to come help us hoist up and move in a new (super long/tall) cabinet into our master bedroom! ???? Where there’s a will there’s a way!

  9. Ashlee says:

The second one you linked is cheaper on joss&main and I have it in my master and absolutely love it!

  10. Breanna Galbraith says:

It looks stunning! Glad you guys got creative and got it in there. Quick question- where is your duvet set from? I LOVE the bedding!

  11. Becki Howard says:

Beautiful bed. What size mattress do you have? Will a CA King mattress fit a King size bed?

  12. Marissa says:

I love the color palette and warmth of all the neutrals together. If you were going to add window treatments (not saying you should or are) what color would they be?

  13. Betsy Vuillemin says:

I’m laughing at the picture them hoisting the bed onto the deck. Hope I’m laughing with you, not at you. Now that your beautiful bed is home. Looks like they weren’t too upset about having to do it, either. Looks like they both have smiles on their faces.

  14. Christina says:

Hi Julia, I have a question for you!

We also have an adjustable bed frame, and I am struggling to find a good way to online search for frames that are compatible. I’ve used Wayfair’s and other site search “features” as well as key terms, and then there’s just a mishmash of results including distinct phrases like, “not compatible with adjustable bed frame”. How did you do this search? Is it just a bunch of trial and error? I’ve been mainly searching for standard bed frames (not platform) but then I get worried that it being hollow with the bed sitting inside will make it floppy. I just want to NOT order a frame + unbox it + assemble it + find out it won’t work. Any tips are appreciated.

Thank you! Love your bed frame but it won’t work with my 8′ ceilings :(

  15. Cindy Keas says:

    The whole room is gorgeous.

  16. Tina says:

The room is gorgeous!!! I love everything including the bed. So if I wanted to get the bed would that mean I would just need to clear 74”? It seems I might not be thinking of this correctly and want to double check before I purchase.

  17. Megan says:

We *just* ordered a canopy bed last night! Now I’m looking for curtains to style it with. I really want to be able to draw the curtains closed for an extra-cozy feeling while sleeping. Can’t wait to see what you do with yours!

  18. Emily says:

It was definitely worth it from a reader viewpoint, so beautiful! We had this exact same issue with a four poster bed, came fully attached and sat in our dining room for a week – ended up having to saw off and reattach the spindle tops but luckily it was at a point where there was a natural divot as part of the design but boy was it sad to do to our brand new gorgeous bed!

  19. Ashley says:

It looks amazing! I am loving that the bones of your space are just so good, even without much styling it seems so put together. I am constantly impressed with your vision and your commitment to doing what you love. Also, thank you for sharing beds (and other products) at all price points. As much as I would love a $2000+ bed, that is definitely not in the cards for us right now. I appreciate that you recognize that some of us are at a different point financially and you are willing to help us find beautiful designs within our budget. LOVE your site and your mission to love wherever we are finding home to be right now.

  20. Sara says:

I feel like this is finally the adult bedroom of your dreams. so fun to watch it come together!

  21. Danna says:

Its perfect for your room! I love canopy beds and the simple lines of the styles now. Kudos to your husband and dad for willing to hoist that bed up not 100% sure it would stay!

  22. P says:

I could move into this bedroom right now! LOVE everything you have done. BLESS your husband and father.

  23. Jillian says:

this room is coming together so nicely. and the new fireplace looks AWESOME with it!

  24. Ashley says:

Curious about under the mattress, so do you still have to buy a frame and just tuck it inside the wooden base? Or is it a platform? I’m not sure I’m understanding; do you need a box spring still or no? Would you mind sharing information on it when you have a moment? It has come together beautifully! I’m loving it!

  25. Joanna says:

I feel like you should stop stating all your paint colors are by F&B when you openly color matched. Because you can’t actually color match F&B’s paint, it is very misleading.

    • Teresa says:

If they don’t mention what brand made (created?) the color then what else are they going to say when someone asks them what color it is? It’s common to have paint colors color-matched in other brands (not everyone has access to every paint brand out there or – in some cases – certain paint brands may be out of their budget). If they had to add a disclaimer each and every time they mention a paint color, it would be an unnecessary time-suck (in my opinion).

      • joanna says:

I get that but everyone knows F&B is a premium paint due to its unique tones & finish. If you are not going to use the real stuff because it isn’t #sponsored, then don’t pretend it is what it isn’t. Just my opinion..

  26. Sally says:

Truly beautiful, your style is exquisite, yet incredibly homie in the most positive way!!!!

Question – do I spot a silk pillow sham?? If so, are they worth it??

  27. Liz says:

It looks like it was meant to be! Fits perfectly! And looks like you guys. It’s beautiful!

  28. Meagan says:

When I saw this canopy bed in the Crate and Barrel catalogue I thought, “those arches! This would be perfect in CLJ’s house!” But you were already there, lol and I love the warmth of the wood you chose!! ???????????? Love this room! https://www.crateandbarrel.com/canyon-king-arched-canopy-bed-with-upholstered-headboard/s501334?st=Canyon%20King%20Arched%20Canopy%20Bed%20with%20Upholstered%20Headboard&ta=canopy%20bes&rac=p1

  29. Andrea says:

Love it! You guys are killing it!

  30. DeAna says:

I look at that frame and think… ???? you guys could have made that! But I almost always think that and then try and then wish I would have bought the thing I was so sure I could just make. ????

    • suzanne says:

I thought the same thing! Miss the old days when bloggers made things instead of buying and constantly promoting product (“Swipe up!”)

  31. Mary says:

Definitely beautiful! Awhile ago you put together a mood board with beds from Serena and lily & interior define and were just deciding between fabric swatches. Can you give any more details on why you decided against those? I’m mostly curious in your thought process!! Were the other choices safer?

    • Julia says:

Good Question! Back then, we were working with the restraints of the tray ceiling, but once we decided to take the plunge and remove it—-it opened up all the possibilities!

  32. Molly says:

This was so nerve-wracking to watch on Stories! I couldn’t believe they’d ship a bed like that – not everyone has huge ceilings and doors! It looks so perfect in your bedroom!

  33. Kelly says:

Soooo gorgeous you guys. I can 100% see the “modern cottage” coming together beautifully.
