This week had a lot of highs and lows with healing from my eye surgery (I’ll touch more on next week), finalizing an exciting partnership launching later this year, to somewhat abruptly closing another chapter–more on that in Monday’s podcast. But maybe what feels most exciting is finalizing a lot of the finishes for the bathroom. We decided to go with option 1 from our vanities post earlier this week and we feel so good about it. Thank you so much for all of your input, voting in the poll and sharing all your personal experiences. It’s so incredible to have a community here of people so willing to share what has worked for them. Thank you.
Other fun things this week!
bed | striped pillow case | window pane sheets | duvet cover | nightstand | glass display box | vase | olive branches | geo orb | acrylic frame | lux gold bowl | rug
• Our his and her nightstand styling post went live on Crate & Barrel’s site this week! Although they have slightly changed, it was fun putting together two different looks with them. Check it out here.
• Speaking of nightstands, one addition to Chris’s has been a second white Sonos speaker. I got him the smart speaker for Christmas and it’s been in the kitchen and we have loved it so much, we got a second for the bedroom. Not only is the sound quality top notch, it is Alexa enabled, so it feels like we have a personal butler in our bedroom, dimming lights, putting on music…you know.
• I could have written this tweet.
• Watching Jenny Komenda’s Gentry project on her stories this week has been like the best home television show I’ve seen in a long time. She pulls out so many great DIY and budget tips. She saved it in her highlights under Gentry Living. Go watch!
• I think I better just start including a link to my sunglasses in every Casual Friday–I get asked about them more than any other thing in my life! They’re good!
• I was helping a friend with her bathroom renovation this week, and stumbled upon this Etsy shop with ridiculously good lighting options at really good prices! I rarely think to check Etsy for lighting, but now I’m working on a roundup of good sources for just that.
Hope you all have a good weekend! I’ll be back tomorrow with a few great weekend sales!
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

I love that Loloi Porcia Rug! I love that you have such a way of making stunning designs look accessible, I have always loved decorating and redecorating, but I am going more for a clean, straight lines kind of look. Your site gives me a lot to think about and sometimes emulate. Thanks for the amazing post.
I was wondering if you would mind me asking about the Loloi Porcia rug – I saw it first in your bedroom update planning post and it looks beautiful, however, a few pictures that I have seen here and on Insta, where you can see a part of the rug, it looks like it is much lighter than the reddish, rusty color (that I fell in love with)on the website. I was contemplating buying it for living room, just wanted to ask you since you have it – how much different is it in real life from the picture? Thanks.
It does NOT look reddish or rusty really at all. That’s what I THOUGHT we were getting, but I have to say, I love it just the same.
Thank you! Do you think the colors would go with beige-y/natural couch? it looks really nice with your light gray bed but I am just little hesitant that it would look washed out.
It really would look beautiful. It’s such a pretty rug that would go with almost anything.
Where’s that “500% off with CLJ code” for those C&B nightstands ;)?! C&B is being super lame with sales on decor and no love for the furniture. NO LOVE!
(I know I can get a 15% off on Ebay, but I’m convinced, probably wrongly so, that there will be a better bedroom sale)
I am still trying to get every brand out there to send me their sale calendars for the year–c’mon!!!! I usually get impatient and buy the eBay coupon.
Chris & Julia,
your bedside tables are gorgeous, but do you not use alarm clocks? That is one thing I noticed was missing. Thank you!
we don’t. We use the alarms on our phones.
Still wondering where those pillows with the black poms are from?
Ha! Laughed at the chapstick comment. I have a crazy lipgloss obsession. At one point I counted 11 different lip glosses in my purse!
Since you mentioned finding lighting on Etsy ( I ALWAYS forget to check there), do you know of any places that have good, inexpensive outdoor pendent lights? We need some that are rated for wet conditions for our bar. A ton are rated for “damp” and I would hate to have them get ruined every winter. I hope your eyes are feeling better!
Ooo! That’s a good one. I’ll have to keep my eyes open.
Just a heads up – Pretty sure you linked the wrong vanity post :)
You’re right! Just updated it.
…asked more about those sunglasses than Benjamin Moore Hazy Skies? (insert thinking emoji)
On stories, it’s sunglasses, in my feed it’s paint colors. Hahaha
Regarding the tweet… One time I said to my husband “I have my car chapstick and my purse chapstick and my bedroom chapstick… but I, for the life of me, can’t find my coat chapstick!”
He just looked at me like I was crazy.
One Christmas, Chris filled my entire stocking with chapstick and Quest bars. It will never be topped.
Yes to Jenny Komenda’s stories! She makes everything look so good & so easy! Although, so do you! ????
Also-thanks for the lighting source. We’re also getting ready for a master bath redo! ????????
I love the nightstands!! I hope your feeling goes well. Just a heads up Chris is misspelled on the Crate blog. :)
“Chis Loves Julia share some of their favorite bedside table ideas, perfect for his or hers.”
Hilariously I meant healing not feeling. HAHA. And here I was trying to be helpful with a spelling mistake and I used a wrong word
…they wrote that, but I’ll pass it on. Haha
Love the bedroom refresh! We have the same bed as you- could you please tell me what height the box spring is and the cover you bought for it that matches the bed frame fabric so well? Thank you!
This is actually the base to our sleep number bed!
