When we decided on an organic patterned wallpaper for the dining room, I knew I had to use the Aegean Stripes (another front runner) somewhere close by. I fell madly in love with those sophisticated, elegant lines, and they looked SO good as a natural contrast to an organic toile. So, I quickly pivoted to using the stripes in the neighboring hallway. This hallway is small, but highly visible thanks to it being the connecting hallway from the kitchen to the bonus room/playroom as well was to the laundry room AND the entrance from the garage (which is our main entrance as a family). So needless to say, we pass through this corridor quite a bit!
I got the inside scoop on Spoonflower launching Grasscloth wallpaper (today’s the big day!), and my mind was reeling. Texture has been trending, and grasscloth is such an easy way to boost the texture in a room. But the combination of these wallpapers adding both texture *and* pattern to a room is exciting …and efficient! Spoonflower represents thousands of artists, who offer their designs on wallpaper, curtains, tablecloths, etc. It’s truly thrilling that ANY of the MANY wallpapers I’ve saved from Spoonflower can be produced on gorgeous grasscloth now.
Grasscloth is made of 100% handcrafted natural sisal. It’s digitally printed (locally for us as they’re located in Durham!) at Spoonflower for a perfect finish section after section. Grasscloth is a natural handcrafted wallpaper with unique variations and irregularities in texture, color, and weave, which is an inherent quality of this material. When installed, the seams between the panels of grasscloth will be visible. This is part of its charm!
Nine years ago nearly to the day, Chris and I installed grasscloth wallpaper in Greta’s very first “big girl room” and it was pretty challenging. If you’re seasoned, maybe you could do it, but we brought in a pro to install the Aegean Stripe. I asked him to center three stripes on the space between the doors visible through the swinging door in the kitchen and THAT request took the longest to get just right.
I love seeing these textured stripes through the transom window and glass swinging door. I LOVE seeing this wallpaper coming down the stairs of the bonus room. If you have a tight hallway–I couldn’t recommend wallpaper enough. It added EVERYTHING this space needed (warmth! pattern! texture! sophistication!) while taking away zero inches from the width of the space.

After it was installed, I might have said…well THIS would have looked incredible in the dining room. But it’s really probably because I just want more of it. So..anyone want to install this in their dining room and send me pics to drool over? :)

What do you think?

  1. Andrea says:

Hello! Is this the Aegean Stripe Navy or the Strip Tan that you used? Looks so nice!

  2. Laura says:

Julia! I LOVE this! I think I want to install this one in my powder room, above a chair rail height wainscoting.
What Farrow and Ball color would contrast nicely with this on trim and wainscoting?

Love this! Considering it for our house, but is it easy to clean? I feel like I wash our walls at least twice a year due to everyday living.

  4. Katie Peterson says:

I had no idea Spoonflower was in Durham, that’s great! And I love the attention to detail centering those three stripes. You’re such a pro!

    LOVE!!!

  6. Cheree says:

Sooooo beautiful! I love how the colors tie back to the kitchen.

  7. Emily says:

I wanted you to put this wallpaper in your dining room, so I voted for the toile in the poll since you always go against what’s most popular. 😜 My strategy didn’t work. Haha

  8. Ben says:

I am super into the stripe and grasscloth combination, and I love it in this hallway area with all the white trim and transoms.

    • Janice says:

I was secretly hopeful you posted your dining room choice!
I’m truly inspired to do grasscloth one day…since I swore never after removing some old 90s wallpaper in several bathrooms and kitchen.

  9. Pia says:

The ceiling! Shouldn’t the wallpaper go over the ceiling? Looks so great on the walls I would want more. I guess that is why you considered dining room :-)

    • C Petry says:

Yes! That’s what immediately stood out to me too! The ceiling still needs something special. I’m sure Julia has something cooked up for it in the future. 😉

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
