My Pre-Holiday Home Project List (Fingers Crossed)

November 13, 2023

We believe we should all love where we live.

We’re a couple of homebodies, working to uncover the home our home wants to be. And we’re so happy to have you here.

Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

At the start of each new year, Chris and I take the time to get on the same page regarding all the things we’d like to accomplish in the home! 2023’s project list is far from finished, and with the end of the year approaching and the holidays right around the corner, I have a few more things I’d like to get checked off—four to be exact. First up, we’ll spend some time refreshing a rarely-before-seen bathroom!

1. Mini Bathroom Refresh

If you recognize this leopard-print bathroom in our home, you’re a true follower. If not, welcome to the club. This bathroom is right off of the playroom/rec room and is just small enough for a toilet and pedestal sink. Since we have plenty of hosting coming up, this bathroom will end up getting a lot of use, so we’d like to give it a bit of love!

Believe it or not, this print is hand-stenciled somehow! We’ll be painting over it, but we might honestly have to do some light sanding so the texture doesn’t come through. Also, I can’t wait to lay down our new line of black-and-white checkered FloorPops called Lawrence to echo what we just did in the girls’ Jack-and-Jill bathroom. We’ll swap out the towel ring, faucet, and lighting, then hang some art to finish it off. We’re hoping to spend no longer than a day with this project!

2. Get the “Playroom” Ready

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you may have seen that we scored the most incredibly gorgeous and large leather sectional from our local restoration hardware, marked down 70 percent! It was too good of a deal to pass up, and we put it in the only room big enough for it—the “playroom.” I’m not even sure we can call it that anymore because this room is evolving into more of a “hangout” space, especially when we have extra company.

We’re certainly not doing a full-on renovation of this space anytime soon, but I’d like to get it a bit more set up for the kids to retreat to.

3. Larger Table in The Dining Room

Shop the dining room

The good news is I finally bit the bullet and ordered a larger table for the dining room! The bad news is it was supposed to arrive over the weekend, but it didn’t and probably won’t get here before Thanksgiving. Boo. We’re really looking forward to hosting about 30 people but are hurrying to solve the seating issue.

Despite not having it before Thanksgiving, I found the most gorgeous oval table that’s (get this) 104 inches and expands to 152 inches with two self-storing leaves. I’m guessing we’ll be able to seat about 14 adults when it’s fully extended! Yes, it will extend into the kitchen when it’s expanded, but that’s something we’re happy to put up with for the sake of enjoying the company of our friends and family.

4. Paint the Trim Red

This isn’t necessarily something that “needs” to be done anytime soon, but it would be nice to have an easy win you know? Put me in, coach! Ever since we came up with the mudroom plans, I’ve been dying to paint the hallway trim red, and since we’re not exactly making progress in the mudroom, it would be nice to take something into my own hands.

It’s so nice to see a post that’s NOT a gift guide this time of year. Please resume your regular home design content! There is so much pressure to over-consume during the holiday season and seeing your entire site taken over by affiliate links is so disappointing. I had to unfollow on Instagram because it felt like I was being bombarded with ads. Please get back to original content that creates value. Not the pushy ads!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
