We got a new light for the stairwell!
Almost 3 years ago, we hung a very modern, cube chandelier in the stairwell and loved it. But as soon as we upgraded our railing last November to this horizontal linear one above (read more about that here), it suddenly felt like a lot of very modern lines. Too much of a good thing?
We’ve been casually looking for a replacement ever since. I knew I wanted something round to balance out the lines and something a little more traditional feeling to balance out the modernism of the railing. We have globe pendants and sconces in the kitchen and hanging a globe here seemed like a good repeat opportunity. We needed something big–around 30″ in diameter.
I originally fell hard for this 30″ Capiz Shell Pendant from Restoration Hardware, but could never bring myself to bite the bullet at $895.
But then, recently, I came across this Honeycomb Chandelier from Serena & Lily that’s also 30″ for $558. It was very similar in shape to the RH one, but with brass and honeycomb instead of squares a bronze. I’ll take it! Last week, I snagged it at their 20% off sale (It’s still going on! Use code HAPPYDAYS for 20% off the whole site!) and it was a deal I couldn’t pass up.
It’s the softness the stairwell was begging for and I find myself staring at it from all corners of the first floor.
It only takes one bulb (we used our favorite 3000K bulb for a clean, white light), and the globe and capiz nature of it really disperses the light beautifully in a way that lights up the whole stairwell at night.
Like a moth to a flame, I can’t. stop. staring.
As for our previous light, we’ll be selling it and a lot of other new or gently used home decor from around here on Instagram through the weekend! Check out @cljtagsale to see and bid on your anything you’d like. It’s all priced to sell.
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

We recently painted our study a dark, moody green color. This is after we first painted it a muddy green, then repainted it a blue-gray. I guess what they say is true; third time’s a charm! The journey was worth it, though, because I’m so in love with this glossy green in contrast with the […]

How did you shorten the chain on the S&L Capiz pendant? I bought it and the chain is heavy gage (almost like a bike chain) and You need the strength of Hercules to open the links.. Did you have the same problem? The chain is 92” and my ceiling is only 9’. I do not see me opening all the links necessary to shorten the traditional way and finishing this century. Thank you for your advice.
West Elm has a lovely version of the Capiz Globe and with their current sale and free shipping it will be about $245.00 I purchased one and love it!
The new light and the railing look amazing! I read your original post on the railing — I am having something similar installed for exterior deck railing. The company I am working with also powder coats the rail but isn’t able to powdercoat in a flat black (it will have some sheen to it). Is that the same situation with your railing? It looks quite matte and awesome in the photos but maybe I am just overthinking this??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Ours has a very light sheen, but is considered matte.
We have the largest restoration hardware version in our family room. High ceiling with lots of geometry going on with reclaimed beams. Perfect!
Lovely!!
Such a lovely light! It almost makes the space feel magical, which makes sense because didn’t Charly love the cool feeling of the landing below? A magical light to illuminate a magical space. Also…I’m sure Sherry from YHL is amped you bought a capiz light. You know Sherry and her capiz ;)
So pretty!!! Went and looked at the sale site! I can’t believe you are selling your big tree stump print!!! I love that statement wall!!! I can’t wait to see what you do there!
We actually have two of those tree prints. Haha it’s kind of a long story, but the one we are selling, the framers (a local shop) cut the print because the non glare acrylic broke and they didn’t want to get a new one. I noticed it was smaller and they bought us a new one.
I love that light! Could you tell me about your window treatment for the window in your stairwell? We have a two-story entryway with a huge window. There are white curtains hanging there currently that are from the previous owners, and I have been looking for replacements.
I prefer your S&L light to the other one! Your home is so good! Also, Can I ask where your sweater is from? Love it!
It’s banana republic from a couple years ago
Love the new light!! Gorgeous!
Can you tell me where you purchased the blinds/shade on that large window in the stairwell? I am trying to figure out something for my large picture windows in my living room. I went to your “shop my home” page and did not see them listed. Probably a super annoying question (because I am sure you probably mentioned them in a post at some point), so thank you in advance!
So pretty, with such a lovely glow. I really like the honeycomb shape.
I LOVE the brass with the honeycomb. So nice and soft and modern. I still have a boob light is my entry under my stairwell- I guess I should get around to replacing that ;)
GORGEOUS. Just when I think your home can’t get any more beautiful…????
Wow, really beautiful light! It’s nice and soft and fits perfectly in your stairwell. I especially like the look all the way from your living room. Bravo!
I love it. Even more than the cube chandelier. Reminds me a bit,of the 70s. (Just a little)
