Eeeep! I have a very little master bedroom update for you today that involves a lamp upgrade/hack. But it’s been a minute since you’ve seen our bedroom, and I also hung one piece of art and got a new pillow for our bed and dressed our bed for warmer months! It’s feeling good in here.

Sources: Rug, Bed, Bench, Nightstand (similar), Lamp, Brass box (CB2, no longer available), Vase, Fig Branch, Art (vintage), Lumbar pillow, Striped Sheets, waffle blanket, duvet + shams, Wall Color: Alabaster by Sherwin Williams, Trim Color: Lamp Room Gray by Farrow & Ball

As much as I loved the previous lamps on our nightstands, they are a little squatty for the space so they don’t leave a ton of room on our nightstands for other things. Which, honestly, isn’t always a bad thing, but we’ve been feeling it lately. Earlier this week, I was in Target for the first time since the beginning of March getting potty training supplies for Polly (different post, different post!) and I came across this clear glass cylinder lamp that was tall with brass accents and even had a usb port on the back. The drum shade was basic, but I immediately thought I could jazz it up with a tapered empire shade and it would look a lot closer to this dreamy $$$ one I’ve been seeing everywhere.

Source

I only saw one, but I put it in my cart and decided to try it out and if it works, I can always get another online. Plot twist–it’s perfect and I literally can’t find it anywhere online in the brass finish! (ahhh!) We love the height and airiness. The usb port keeps our nightstands even more cleaned off. And I tried on the shade from the lamps we had and it really upped the wow factor!

(Update! Our readers pulled through and found a link for you!)

Glass table lamps with tapered shades have been popping up everywhere, and I’m clearly falling under their influence. The really good ones are of course more expensive, but below I rounded up a few at every price point and even new shades to get yourself THE look!

Source

Start with one of these we rounded up below! (We have #5, except in brass and it was $59…I’m literally going crazy that I can’t find another one, so yes, I made this as a resource for myself, too. #7 looks really similar!)

1. Fillable Brass Accent Lamp | 17.5 x 11 | $34
2. Modern Acrylic Accent Lamp | 15.5 x 9 | $39
3. Bubble Glass Large Lamp Base | 19.75 x 7 | $41
4. Large Ribbed Table Lamp | 17.5 x 6.5 | $44
5. Brushed Nickel Accent Lamp | 25.25 x 15 | $71
6. Kemmer Table Lamp | 28 x 15 | $89
7. Collins Brass Table Lamp | 29.25 x 15 | $92
8. Ava Glass Table Lamp | 24 x 15 | $129
9. Aria Table Lamp | 22.5 x 9.25 | $249
10. Seeded Oval Lamp | 22.5 x 13 | $265
11. Midbrook Table Lamp | 26 x 23.5 | $398 (20% off right now with code ATHOME)
12. Brooks Table Lamp | 30 x 23 | $569 (20% off right now with code DELIGHTED)

Here’s the other half of the get-the-look equation–the empire/chimney/tapered lamp shade. It’s hard to buy a lamp shade that costs almost as much as a lamp, but these are great to look around for in thrift stores, too, (when we’re able to do that, again!)

1. Empire Lamp Shade | 11 x 17 | $16
2. Vertical Beige Lamp Shade | 11 x 17 | $32
3. Black Chimney Empire Shade | 10.25 x 19 | $49
4. Empire Fabric Lamp Shade | 12 x 19 | $52 (on sale for $42!)
5. Aspen Empire Shape Lamp Shade | 12 x 19 | $55
6. Ivory Lamp Shade | 13 x 22 | $86
7. Burlap Off-White Lamp Shade | 13 x 22 | $91
8. Black Linen | 14 x 24 | $105
9. Burlap Linen | 13 x 22 | $109

I’m still not certain what I’m going to do about getting another lamp. I’m considering buying the nickel and adding some rub n’ buff to them BOTH to make the brass and nickel a little more of an aged brass. But I AM certain I’m on board with this direction and trend.

What do you think?

  1. kim says:

doesnt look like the link for your bedroom nightstand is active. Can you provide any further direction?

  2. Lisa says:

I love the idea of switching out the lamp shades from the Target lamps! Beautiful results! I have the same brass lamps for my bedroom.

Would you mind letting me know what type of harp and finial you used? I’m having trouble switching our the harp. Could you let me know the type or size?

  3. Savannah says:

I feel like I read a comment from another person about the size of art behind your bed….but I can’t find it ( I have searched high and low). Do you mind sharing recommendations on sizing art behind a king bed?! I love the smaller frame look but feel like when I try to pull it off it looks silly. Help! Thank you for taking the time.

  4. B. Van says:

This is stunning!!! What harp and finial did you use when you changed our the lamp shade?

  5. Lara says:

Please can anyone tell me where this bedside table is from, I know this isn’t related to bedside lamps, but I love it so much! Thank you.

  6. Caylin Wiebe says:

Hello! What size lamp shade do you have on this lamp in the photo? Thank you!

  7. Eileen says:

Julia, I think you linked the actual harps and shade you ended up with in your instastories. I forgot to save the them, do you mind linking them?

  8. mel says:

Gorgeous! I actually think yours looks more high-end than the brooks one with the cord just kind of hanging out.

  9. Jess Caneal says:

I just have to know where you got the chandelier in the living room photo. Can you share?

  10. Dawn says:

I have coveted that lamp style for at least a decade. It’s gorgeous.

  11. Kate says:

Where is your shade from? I noticed the Target lamp has an uno fitter but I can’t easily find an uno fitting shade in the correct size. They all seem to be spider.

  12. Rachel says:

So pretty. Which lampshade did you end up going with?! This is LOVELY!

  13. Amanda says:

We have had the target bubble glass lamps linked (with slightly tappered shades) for years on our nightstands. We love them! Excellent price point, and for once we were ahead of the curve :D

Would be nice to see more of these “look for less” or “dupes” posts – I love them!

  14. June Bedford says:

Love the lumbar pillow on the bed! I’ve been looking everywhere for one. Can you share the source with us?

  15. Sara says:

I have West Elm’s Acrylic Column USB Table Lamp. It’s a glass lamp made of Antique Brass. It’s a great lamp!

  16. Noni says:

Thank you so much for your great ideas. I have a nickel one from West Elm that I’ve had for years with a drum shade and looked at it recently and it looked tired. An empire shade and new location did the trick! I am considering the brass rub but how would you get to the metal inside the glass cylinder? Thanks again!

  17. Andrea says:

I just purchased two of the Target lamps last weekend at my local Target. Using them now and love them.

  18. EP says:

I love this look! I’ve been trying to find the perfect black empire shade for a vintage lamp I have forever… it always surprises me how expensive lampshades are!

    • Karen says:

I agree that lamp shades are more money than you would think, especially when you see the price of some entire lamps (they can be less than the shade-only price!). I had a vintage lamp and bought a shade, but the shade was not tall enough – so the metal part of the lamp where you turn on the lamp (base, where the harp sits) was visible. It drove me crazy. Instead of buying a new lampshade, I purchased some 3″ fringe and hot glue gunned it on the inside of the lamp shade – it looks great, and was only $10.

  19. Amy says:

Oh man, I had those same Target lamps with silver instead of gold (minus the usb) and I replaced them about 6 months ago with black lamps! Oops! My room did need some black though!

  20. Justynn says:

Theres a bunch of those in stock in brass by me, if you end up wanting to have one shipped :)

  21. Oh yes! I love the change! The older lamps probably took up more surface space too.

    • They have a really good dupe of this target lamp at Walmart! I got the gold ones from there and shades from Target for them a couple months ago! I just looked online and they are $99 but I swear I didn’t pay more than like $20

    • Noni says:

      Ditto!

    • Mimi says:

I have those same Walmart ones (Good Housekeeping brand?)! Mine were on clearance for $21 each I believe about 3 months ago. They even have the USB port on the back.

  23. Meg says:

A lamp seems like the perfect place to splurge on a trend! Low commitment, high impact and functional!

    • Julia says:

Omg YESS!!!!! I looked through every page! How did you find it?! I’m ordering right now. Thank you!

      • Sydney85 says:

Hope you got it! It looked like only one was left. I put in the lamp that was available but substituted brass instead of brush nickel and the lamp came up.

      • Allison says:

Lol!! Glad I could be of help. I literally just googled the name/description of the lamp you linked and it was the first result!

    • Patricia says:

That one is available at my local store also but not by mail order. I’d go with rub ‘n buff you suggested.
