It’s clear the study and I are on a journey. Over a year ago, I rolled out the first roll of wallpaper and put together a mood board of how I envisioned the study to look and feel, and since then, it has transformed and evolved. We added wainscoting, painted it green, painted it blue, and changed layouts more than once. We even transformed it into a dining room for Holiday dinners, so it’s a little bit wild to see it taking a step back. Our plans to add built-in shelves and pocket doors led to the decision to repaint yet again, and while it’s all prepped and ready, I figured I’d better take a step back completely and get my vision straight.
Chandelier | Picture Light | Mural | Office Chair | Table | Floor Lamp | Accent Chair | Side Table
There are obviously a lot of elements that are staying the same. The mural wallpaper (duh), the bubble chandelier, and the table are all a part of the current ensemble, but I swapped out a few elements that I think graduate the study into a more elevated, sophisticated space.
The main desk chair we’ve been using is an upholstered dining chair, which is less than ideal. We’re upgrading to an official rolling desk office chair, which looks like the comfiest, cushy chair I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to sit on it.
Also, the sling chairs we’ve had forever are retiring for now. I love them so much, but it’s odd to be looking down at people while they’re sitting so low to the ground. I’m swapping them for these velvet upholstered chairs I think will really soften the space with the pretty curves. The cocoa color is “chef’s kiss,” but they have so many good colors.
I wanted to bring in some modern touches like the lamp that’s actually currently in our living room. The touch of black is much needed, and will balance really well with the brass side table and picture lights.
Now I just have to decide if the rug stays or if we’re swapping it for another CLJxLoloi rug.
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

We recently painted our study a dark, moody green color. This is after we first painted it a muddy green, then repainted it a blue-gray. I guess what they say is true; third time’s a charm! The journey was worth it, though, because I’m so in love with this glossy green in contrast with the […]

I would love to know the dimensions of this room? Can’t wait to see it all done!
The brown chairs are $2200 each. Who can afford this unless you’re rich of course.
Right, but this is what she’s doing to her house, not what she’s advising others to do. She’s been building up her blog for 14 years and came from humble beginnings.
The link for the rug says it is discontinued! What words would you use to describe it to try to find similar?
I’m wondering if perhaps the back right corner needs a little something. I don’t know what, because you’ll have your bookcases, you’ve got reading chairs, your desk is central…Something substantive, with height – maybe one of the faux trees? perhaps with a little side table for a candle? I really don’t know, but it just feels like as a study everything is very central, with nothing grounding the edges. (really love the new chairs, band I’m looking forward to more bookcases – I loved the original music/reading room)
I’m always so ex to see what you come up with next!
Gah the new chairs!!! They will be amazing! I have a feeling you will be swapping rugs a few times before you settle in. I am so excited to see how this turns out!
I love the new paint color and velvet chairs. It’s going to be a great room to get work done in, if you can stop looking at the walls.
I think the window area is crying out for curtains. A textured fabric like linen, pleated top, and the same color as the background of the mural. Thank you for all you do to inspire so many of us!
I LOVE that desk chair. The combo of the light chair with the light table and dark chairs will look fantastic.
Okay Julia, I see you. You just upped your study-room game a few notches. The color palette, the textures, along with the mural…very sultry. I think with the dark paint and arm chairs, you should definitely try the ivory rug first, to see if it works for you. I didn’t think I could get excited again about this room…that sailed ship just made a U-turn!
