I broke out my green paints this week and I couldn’t be happier with the way Emerald City turned out. Sometimes I get attached to paintings. This one and Cleansing Cry have been two that are hard to let go of for me. I found it interesting that in the book, the wizard had everyone wearing green spectacles so that the Emerald City appeared green. While I was painting, I thought about how blogs can be like that at times. We share these small glimpses of our lives where things maybe don’t look emerald, but do look so sparkly and clean through the eye of a crystal clear, sharp camera lens. In order and basking in natural daylight. Obviously the every day isn’t like that, for us at least.
Chris works a normal job. There are tumble weeds of dog hair sweeping across the living room where the baseboards should be. I struggle to stay caught up on laundry. I don’t have a stockpile of posts in draft form like I hear so many other bloggers do. (Is that true!?) But I also don’t let myself get down on it. I do what I can. I blog because I like to. I try to keep my eyes in check so that I don’t perceive things that aren’t real or expectations that aren’t realistic. At the end of the day, whether my house is clean or needs attention–there is no place like home, because that’s where my family is.

Happy Weekend to you!
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

You know about my “Wizard of Oz” thing, and I love the lesson you’re applying here. Of course, I’m buying a print.

“I don’t have a stockpile of posts in draft form like I hear so many other bloggers do. (Is that true!?)”
Funny – I do have a ton of posts in draft form – but I find that even more paralysing than starting with a blank page! They are queued up and waiting for me, begging for me to finish them, but I just don’t seem to ever get around to getting them ALL done.
So I guess I just wanted you to know that the grass is always greener (er, emeralder?) on the other side! Being on top of your posts, and only writing new ones you intent to publish immediately, seems like an ideal situation to me, whilst having ones started you can quickly finish up, seems ideal to you. Ha ha!
Haha! Thanks for the insight. And “emeralder” was hilarious.
