Before we get into the meat of today’s post, I wanted to give you a podcast update. It’s hard to believe we have been doing The Chris Loves Julia Podcast with Preston Pugmire for 5 months now! But even before that, it’s been a year since Preston sat down at our dining room table and pitched us the idea, “You should do a podcast. We should do a podcast.” As a musician and audio engineer professional, we didn’t want to and, frankly, couldn’t do it without him. It’s been a complete riot to sit down every week and talk and laugh hysterically about diy, home design and family in a very candid way. We love doing it. And the overwhelming positive response from all of you makes us even more excited to record and brainstorm new episodes. Although the momentum is strong, because of the time each episode takes–about 10 hours from brainstorming, to recording to editing–we’ve decided to publish a new episode every other week going forward as opposed to every week. We hope in doing so, we can keep the quality of our content on all of our channels up to par, and still have time to spend with our families. Thank you for listening and reading and liking and commenting and sharing. You keep us going. A new episode will be live a week from today.

It’s been over a month since I added a layered doormat to our front porch, after being inspired by Kirsten. Shortly after I posted my own version, many of you followed suit! Thank you for tagging us on Instagram. Your layered doormats look beautiful and it reminds me how grateful I am for this little slice of the internet where we can all be inspired and inspire each other. Sadly, the buffalo check rug that I found on Overstock sold out within hours after I linked to it. I’ve been keeping an eye out to see if it would come back, but the word “Liquidation” over the photo isn’t giving me much hope. So, today, I thought it would be fun to give you a few good alternatives that you can mix and match and layer away.

Layered Doormat Options | Chris Loves Julia

The formula is a no-brainer, layer a doormat over a flat-weave rug. And, uhhh, that’s it. My only note is before you purchase them, double-check the sizes to make sure the doormat isn’t too much smaller or too close in size. A 2×3 flatweave will usually work perfectly.

Our welcome mat is number 4 and over B (it looks navy, but the description says black) is probably the closest match to what we have. But I’m also loving 1 over C and 5 over A. You can’t go wrong with any of them. Happy Layering! And do continue to tag @chrislovesjulia on Instagram so we can see your pretty layered doormats.

What do you think?

  1. Jamie says:

Where are you finding the bottom layer rugs? I have searched high and low and can’t find anything. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  2. Carol says:

I love the look but what material
R your flat weave rugs made of? Interested ror durability & fading.

  3. Jamie says:

I came across this post from last year and love the layered look. The bottom rugs that are linked are no longer available and I am having a hard time finding one. Have you seen any good options that are still available? I’m looking for a plaid or buffalo check one to go under a long door mat.

  4. JCK says:

Where can I find one of the flat weave rugs?!

  5. Elizabeth from Central PA says:

It is back in stock from Overstock. I bought it yesterday using your referral link (hope it helps!). Thank you for being a personal shopper. I have never loved another blogger’s house so much as I do yours.

  6. Lucie says:

That is SUCH a great idea! (Hello from a Frenchie in Portugal). Now that we’re going into winter I have been thinking that I need a better doormat but was so uninspired by the same ugly choice out there. However Portuguese shops have absolutely amazing cotton rugs and I cannot wait to start looking for a fun combo! Thank you so much for the idea!!

  7. Will says:

Oh my goodness, I love the idea of layering doormats – genius! Feeling very inspired, thanks :)

  8. That is a great plan! We took a break after “Season 1” of our podcast so we could build up a back log before relaunching with Season 2 and that has lasted a little longer than we thought!

The editing just takes an insane amount of work (especially for an interview show) compared to writing. When you have to listen to everything in real time it just adds up.

One of the things we’re going to be trying is to introduce alternate between the full episodes (45 minute interviews with couples) and short 5 – 15 minute mini episodes.

That way we can batch record a bunch of small ones and then stretch out the “big ones”. That’s the only way we can make it sustainable for us while working and still spending time together. Good luck and keep up the great work!

  9. Rebecca says:

I seriously laugh out loud right along with you guys on the podcast! Makes doing the dishes so much more pleasant. ;) I love it and have learned a lot from both the podcast and your blog, so thanks for all the hard work!

  10. Brenda says:

However often you publish your podcast, I really enjoy it. Thanks for spending the time!

  11. Michelle says:

I love your podcast so much! Do whatever you need to do, just keep us laughing and inspired!

  12. Hannah says:

I stripped an entire room of old wallpaper this weekend and your podcast was perfect to listen to while I was working! Glad you’re going to keep going with it.

  13. Alyson Sharp says:

I was one of those who was so disappointed that the linked buffalo rug was sold out, so I SO appreciate this! Thank you tons! And, even thought it will be every other week, I can’t wait to tune in and listen. I LOVE your podcast!

  14. Missy G. says:

I love this look! I was all ready to purchase E because I already have a similar mat to #1, but I’m concerned that E is meant for indoors only? My front porch is mostly protected from rain, but a mat would most definitely get wet every once in a while.

  15. I would so love to do something like that ! But winter is coming, and in Canada it’s always with lot of snow and ice. So I think i’m a bit late for this this year…. what will you do come winter? Will you remove them completely/change for something more weather friendly?

Also, while I’m a bit sad for the delay in the podcast, ’cause I really LOVE them, it’s really is ok and I’m supporting you 100%. It’s important to keep everything balanced and have time for family on top of that ! If nothing, the podcast will just be even better and funnier ! Can’t wait ’till next week to hear you talk again :)

  16. Amy says:

Julia, totally understand about the amt of time it takes to produce the podcast. Whatever it takes to make it sustainable. I love it and listen to it on my way in to work…it’s a Treat!
