This post is in partnership with ADT® Home Security via SafeStreetsUSA.

It’s now been a little over 5 months since our much loved A-frame cabin burned down. The owners of the neighboring cabin went up to spend some time at their own place and sent us some pictures. And though I try to remember it like this:

Palisade's a-frame cabin

The fact is, this is what it looks like now:

Palisade's a-frame burned down

We’ve tried to be as open as we felt appropriate in sharing our experience with all of you. How our plans for the cabin have changed, changed again, changed back, and changed to something else entirely. But at the heart of our message we hope has been the mantra, Don’t Wait.” Start making memories now, and enjoy every phase.

But there’s another side to to tragedy that is more difficult to express–which is the sudden loss of that easy comfort most people have by just assuming today will be like any other day. By unconsciously feeling that everything will continue on as it always has. I lost that feeling over the years, and after the fire, I wasn’t sure there was anything that was going to allow me be comfortable and not anxious in my own home again.

We’ve experienced some of the most disconcerting events one can experience with their home. We had a break-in while living in Utah; a carbon monoxide leak at our previous home, and a fire resulting in a complete loss of structure and property at our cabin in February of this year. And though we’ve taken steps over the years to secure our homes here and there, with the move into this new home we knew it was time for something more comprehensive and easy-to-manage that could actually help us retrieve that feeling of safety we’ve been living without for months now.

We approached some friends of ours who work with ADT® Home Security and began telling them our concerns. They listened and understood and then educated us on so many things that are available, and on how simple it is to manage and how affordable it can be. After putting together a plan, they scheduled an installer who came to our home and set everything up for us.

When it comes to home security, ADT is tops. They’re known for great customer service and after being walked through their technology and monitoring options and using the system for the past month, we feel so confident in the safety they provide our family. We have integrated fire/smoke/carbon detection; video monitoring outside and inside our home; motion detection; monitors on all access points; video doorbell, and even lighting and thermostat control.

And even though the ADT Panel is so user-friendly and easy to navigate, we really love using the ADT App! We can monitor and control every aspect of our home’s security and automation right from our phones. We can even check the locks around the house and set them to automatically engage whenever the system is armed. And after spending the first few weeks here walking around the entire house every night flipping switches and locking doors, I can tell you that Chris is in heaven with how much simpler it is to do it all with one touch while lying in bed.

We honestly love this system and feel so much safer knowing we can keep an eye on everything no matter where we are. I can’t tell you how many sleepless nights I’ve had since February. Nightmares and anxiousness. We try not to think of the many horrible what-ifs that have to do with the fire because the most important thing is we are all safe, but it would have been so amazing to be alerted on our phones when smoke or heat or fire was first detected. But now I honestly feel safe and confident and at peace. I feel at home.

We’ve partnered with ADT and SafeStreetsUSA to make this same sense of security accessible to and affordable for our followers, as well.

Chris Loves Julia + ADT® Home Security

What do you think?

  1. Elizabeth Loewen Andrews says:

I’m guessing this is US only? Any chance of an ADT Canada partnership? ;)

  2. Kayla says:

Coming back to this blog post, you definitely do state that this is through SafeStreets so I’m not blaming you guys, but man, SafeStreets is terrible. They misrepresented themselves as ADT several times and did the typical bait and switch with what you get vs. what you actually receive. They don’t tell you on the phone that the video monitoring is only a 30 day trial, and the installation technician was totally incompetent. They left several large holes in my wall when trying to install the security panel. The guy on the phone also promised two video cameras, and upon further review by a real ADT agent, that was simply untrue as well. I wish you could switch this partnership to just ADT and not SafeStreets. If you look them up on any review site, they score terribly everywhere.

  3. LC says:

I understand that you have had experiences that lead you to be afraid and anxious, and so the money spent on security systems gives you peace of mind. However, the wording of your advertising for ADT preys on peoples’ feelings of vulnerability – “nothing’s more important than feeling safe,” etc. I just wish you would have talked about your experience, promoted the features of ADT and left it at that. Just like their TV ads showing women alone in a house that’s being burglarized make me feel manipulated into feeling unsafe and vulnerable, *some* of the wording you’re using does the same.

    • Julia says:

Oh my goodness, I would never want anyone to feel manipulated–we even said that there was zero obligation. It’s hard to share a vulnerable experience on the internet, for sure. We just have learned to give people (and commenters) the benefit of the doubt and know they mean well and hope they extend us the same courtesy.

  4. Pam says:

Be sure to check with your insurance company. We got a discount on our homeowner’s policy for having a security system. The discount was enough to cover the monthly fee. This makes it a total no brained.

  5. Autumn Braswell says:

We would love to receive a quote!

  6. Kate says:

I just signed up for this today! I thought it sounded like a “too good to be true” offer but it definitely is not. I suggest everyone check it out if you can afford a little extra payment each month! Not to mention you get a homeowners insurance discount if you have it, so it probably evens out in many cases. We are getting the equipment installed in our new home in a couple weeks. Thank you for this!

  7. Michelle says:

I’m convinced! Every time we go on vacation I ask repeatedly if the gas if off or if we have left the right lights on while we’re gone. We have two dogs who get sat while we’re gone for the overnights, but during the day they are left alone. Living where we live, it’s not uncommon to keep yourself to yourself, so even though our neighbors are VERY close in proximity, we hardly know each other’s names after nine years (none of us have young children and are at later stages in life) so no one close by would know how to reach us if something were to happen. I worry about my four-legged kids and our house was built in 1890 and upgraded by novices, we’ve found, and in stages so who know’s what’s lurking beneath the wall surfaces. This is the perfect opportunity to at least explore if this gives us peace of mind for our two pups and this old house we love so much. Thank you CLJ!!!

  8. Jeanna says:

Were they ever able to determine the cause of the fire?

  9. Basha says:

Thank you Julia and Chris. I have been a reader for years but never commented. First, I am so sorry for your great loss & your feelings fear and anxiety. I am so happy to read this post and learn that you are feeling better. We just had a break in and my husband was tasked with looking into security systems today. Your post was on time and on point. I am grateful for your willingness to share so much detail, so often, and so generously.

  10. Linda says:

You mentioned in a previous post that they have not been able to determine the actual cause of the cabin fire. Do you ever wonder if it was intentionally set (arson) by someone? That is exactly one of the many dark places my mind would go after such a tragedy especially when your life is so public. I am so happy you have your peace back. It’s priceless!

  11. Emma says:

I love hearing that you guys are getting some new peace of mind! It was so sad and shocking when you shared the news about losing your A-Frame. Thanks for taking us along for the ride even when it’s tough.

  12. Samantha says:

Is there an expiration on this offer? We are in the early stages of buying a house. I would love to have some peace of mind in our new home but we wouldn’t be moving until probably early Sept.

  13. kim weigand says:

I am very familiar with those feelings and trying to regain trust in humanity and God to be totally honest. Two weeks after moving into our newly built home, we had a burglary. They did a lot of damage to our home and to our trust. Ten years later, while going through a bitter divorce, our home burned to the ground. I have since rebuilt and I have three wonderful daughters and six beautiful grand daughters and though those tragedies will forever be part of me, I am truly happy!!

    • Yvette says:

I’m so sorry to hear all of this… God never wants these things to happen to us. We live in a world where bad things happen not to just bad people but to good people too. That’s when God is there. I pray you find him again ????

  14. Jenna says:

After your fire, I also started having some of those feelings of anxiety so I can’t even imagine how much it must have impacted you!! So glad to hear you found a solution to give you some peace of mind. It is so important to feel safe in your home!.

  15. Julie M says:

Just curious – I know you spoke highly of the GetSafe system you had at your last home. Was there a specific reason to use a different system with your new home?

    • Chris says:

Integration, mostly. ADT supports so many things that GetSafe and many other systems don’t. Instead of having to manage things with multiple apps, we can have it all in the same place. There’s also a lot more support from ADT, which we feel good about.

  16. Sarah says:

Was this panel just recently installed? Recently on instagram you were pointing out how the wall the panel is on isn’t aesthetically pleasing due to the placement of the security panel, thermostat and light switches and how you plan to move all of them during your renovation so you can hang art. If the panel is brand new, is there a reason you chose to put it there instead of somewhere else where it is less of an eyesore?

    • Julia says:

Yes!!! The previous owners had a different security system panel and we just took theirs down and put this one in its place. Should have probably just moved it then, But when we do the kitchen renovation we’ll clear this wall and move it. ????

We recently painted our study a dark, moody green color. This is after we first painted it a muddy green, then repainted it a blue-gray. I guess what they say is true; third time’s a charm! The journey was worth it, though, because I’m so in love with this glossy green in contrast with the […]
