After sharing a before look of our home gym, the cat is out of the bag! We’re updating our home gym and I just know you are not ready for what’s coming. Chris and I have had this space up our sleeves for months and our excitement is becoming too much to contain!
As far as equipment for the gym, we’re keeping our favorite rower and treadmill, adding in some weights, a bench, and some mats. The shining star of the show will be the checkered floor, hands down! We’ve done it before, we’re doing it in the laundry room, and honestly I just can’t stay away from this look. I think it will be nice to repeat the black and white flooring from one utility space to another so the house feels cohesive. For lighting, I found the prettiest ceiling fan and a complimentary semi-flush mount which will go right in the stair landing. As for paint, we’re keeping it simple with white walls, but I do have a little plan to elevate the mirrors already in place.
Here’s a first look at the selections!
Floor Tile (taking inspo from our last dining room)
Yoga Mats (got these to hang them)
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.
SHop all

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

Loving the mood board! Any chance you will have a promo code for the Ergatta rower again?
Code is CLJ50
Well now I need to go read your post on how to get a spouse on board with design ideas… because I NEED this fan and my husband says no. 😂😂😂
Coolest gym lights ever! I knew you’d be going checkerboard.
Hi! I’m looking to read your post on your beadboard ceilings but the post itself is glitchy and won’t load the past the first paragraph. Can you take a peak at that? Would love to cause that post for reference on a project! Thank you!
Hi Joanna! I think we fixed it! Let us know if you have any more issues with it.
Beautiful design! That fan is amazing!
This looks amazing! My husband and I have back problems. I saw in another post you mentioned Chris had a back injury, as well. I was wondering how the rowing machine had worked for that? Considering one now!
I use it more than Chris, honestly, because it’s so low impact and my joints can get inflamed really easy. Chris’s back is doing a lot better a few years later and he agrees it’s an amazing full body workout!
What made you decide to do tile in the gym room vs a traditional home gym rubber flooring? Wouldn’t tile crack if a dumbbell is accidentally dropped?
Just a note – if you ever plan on doing heavy weightlifting (or think your girls might), tile might not be a durable choice. I’m afraid it will crack!
We have something up our sleeeeeves :)
Came here for this comment! Can’t wait to see what you do with the flooring!
What a beautiful home gym!😍 I was just sourcing your checkered floor post for a coffee shop I’m designing! They’re so beautiful! I can only find the 30×30 ones in stock though so I’m on the hunt for 24×24 in this same tones!
Ohhh my goodness it’s like a chic boutique athletic club!! So impressed (and jealous!)
This is going to be so gorgeous! That fan!
Is this project Lumens we’ve been waiting for?! 😉
Could be ;)
It’s gonna look gorgeous! I notice that you don’t mention your db method machine, but I spied it in your clean out video – do you still use it? Would you recommend it? I was just considering getting one…
We’re definitely including it and I would recommend it! Really good for getting proper squats in!
Awesome, thanks! It’s definitely on my wish list
