When we finished the girls’ room last fall, we had several of you ask if we had any plans to add an area rug. I was open to the idea–I’ve always been pro-rug on rug, as long as the wall-to-wall carpet is low-pile–but I didn’t want to rush laying something down.
However, the last time we got our carpets cleaned (we get them cleaned every 6 months to keep them under warranty), I noticed the carpet cleaners spent extra time in their room. And while the carpet came out squeaky clean and looking new, I thought, “It couldn’t hurt to lay down an area rug for extra protection.” It’s the same reason we have an area rug in the playroom. I found this beautiful, light brown, striped rug on eSaleRugs for just $89 and I was sold! It’s the perfect mix of interest, while still being quite neutral. It comes in a bunch of colors, too!
Along the same lines, we recently added a new page to our blog cataloging our favorite places to shop for home furnishings and decor, from lighting to art to pillows and more.
I thought adding a new rug to our home would be the perfect opportunity to share our top places to shop for area rugs with links to some favorites from each retailer below!

Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

We recently painted our study a dark, moody green color. This is after we first painted it a muddy green, then repainted it a blue-gray. I guess what they say is true; third time’s a charm! The journey was worth it, though, because I’m so in love with this glossy green in contrast with the […]

How do you keep all of your area rugs clean and keep them from smelling like doggy? We have two Boxer Bulldogs which have a tendency to drool, and they are also obsessed with scoping out all rugs in the house and rolling around on them constantly. Vacuuming alone does not always seem to do the trick.
Hmm…we don’t have that problem so much. Just a lot of hair that vacuums up.
Great rug sources! My personal favorite is the Vintage Rug shop! :)
The rug in the girls room is gorgeous. Would you say the color is more brown or beige.
It’s tan
#2 is AN AMAZING RUG!!!! Seriously, I want to pet it… okay, maybe a little drastic… But that is beautiful!! Love the soft colors and the worn look of the rug.
Looks great! I love this room so much, it’s playful but also tasteful.
Do your girls still use the zip up bedding? I think its called Beddys? I saw it on shark tank and wondered if it would stick with kids being able to make their own bed more easily!
yes! We love it. It’s just getting washed. :)
I just got the FLOR carpet tiles after reading your reviews and studying all the pictures I could find of your entryway and I am in LOVE! So glad you recommended these!
The new rug looks great in the girls room! I love shopping for rugs from Target’s website because you can return in-store and save the return shipping expense. :)
I found using a rug gripper pad between the rug and carpet helps hold the rug in place and keeps it from flipping up. Is that your experience as well?
100%!
We recently replaced our carpet and the new carpet is much more plush than the last so our rugs all bunch up. I love the rugs we have and still want to be able to use them. Do you have a specific rug gripper pad that you would recommend? I keep finding mixed reviews so I would love to know what you prefer.
Love the girl’s new rug! Definitely just enough interest without being distracting. Made me question if it’d been there since the beginning and I’d just over looked it. Great choice!
It excites me that you picked the rug from Target I got for our little girl’s nursery! Bought it when it was on sale (still $160) but I loved it so much I caved. Although a couple weeks later I found the exact same one at our Goodwill (they buy Target clearance products to sell), and it happened to be a 50% off day so I snagged it for $42 instead. Thank goodness for return policies! I still love that rug though, even though nothing else in the room has been done yet–I think we’re painting this weekend finally!
That’s awesome!!
