Guests: Shea McGee from Studio McGee
Hot Topic: Energy efficient bulbs
Show Notes: Lighting fixtures are as varied as any other product for your home, but once you’ve found that perfect fixture, how do you make sure it will give off the light you want for your space? Sometimes you want it to feel warm, other times you need to highlight a specific task or piece of artwork. How do you go about planning the lighting for your home, or make updates to maximize what’s already in place?
In this episode we talk all about the mysterious side of lighting. What is the Kelvin scale, how does that relate to lumens and what are my options for achieving warm, energy-efficient light? We also visit with Shea McGee, from Studio McGee, who shares super helpful tips for planning your own lighting, maximizing the limits of your own spaces, what every room needs, and where she gets her inspiration from.

Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

I enjoyed listening to this podcast yesterday on my 5 mi run. Gotta say though…all the talk about ceiling heights…argh! We just purchased a 1950’s lake house that has just over 7 foot ceilings. Kind of heartbreaking. And we’re going to be taking 2 more inches away from that – bonus is then we get to lose the post and beam smack in the middle of the room. But definitely have to do recessed lighting in that scenario!
I love the podcast! I oddly found the podcast first, and have been enjoying the blog, since! I really enjoy that you have a host, Preston, who is very funny and entertaining. I am wondering if you could touch on mixing patterns, metals, styles etc. Thanks for keeping me entertained at work :)
Great idea. Thanks, Tara!
NEEDED this lighting information in my life. What’s your go-to brand for bulbs?
We really love these Cree bulbs.
Loved this episode! Can you remind me which Kelvin number was your favorite, and how many lumens you shoot for in lightbulbs? I didn’t get a chance to jot it down as I was listening. Thanks a million! Love your stuff.
I like around 2700-3000 on the Kelvin scale and 800-900 lumens. Thanks for listening!
Listened to this episode yesterday. Loved all of the good tips and advice!
I’m a little late to the Podcast game. I’ve listened to radio shows via podcast and one ghost story show. It wasn’t until I decided I needed more than 80’s pop and Disney to get me through painting our upstairs rental unit that I decided to load your podcast onto my phone. I LOVE THEM! You are both such lovely ‘real life’ personalities and I have truly enjoyed listening through them. Keep up the good work and thanks for the company on long DIY work days.
