Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

The last time you saw the left side of our family room , it was right after I painted Robert Frost’s poem on a really big canvas (we did show you a few more sneak peaks of this room when we figured out an entertainment center solution in this post).  Although we love the new art, the rest of the room needed a lot of TLC.  We have a lot of big plans for this space, but before Chris’s entire family comes for dinner on Sunday, there were a few little things that we could do to spruce up the room.  For instance, the pillows are a little too college dorm for my liking, we really wanted to find some lamps to flank the canvas and hang some window treatments for those huge sliding doors leading to the backyard.

We went with our go-to Ikea white curtains for the sliding doors.  Since the dining room windows are just a few feet away, we wanted it to flow nicely.  But when I hung them, they looked pretty blah:

Granted, it was an improvement from the bare doors and they still needed hemmed, but they really needed something else.  So I went to work making some tie-backs out of scrap fabric I had lying around from recovering a lamp a few months back. I hemmed all four sides of each rectangle and then sewed a small button hole on each end:

I attached a little brass hook to the wall next to each curtain panel and then just wrapped my fun fabric around the panels and hooked it onto the…hook.  :)

I also hemmed the curtains, and BAM, what a difference:

Aren’t the patterned tie-backs fun?  We still plan to get some bamboo blinds to fill the gap between the curtain rod and doors, but for now–this is just the quick fix we needed.  We took care of the pillow situation and got a couple lamps, too:

The lamps we got at Ikea, along with the two smallest pillows in front.  The other pillows we had and just pulled out of hiding.  A few little changes really helped this room look more sophisticated and presentable.

That’s another room I can mark off as guest-ready, but there’s still a few projects I have left to do before Sunday. Off to put together another gallery wall under our new light in the stairway!

What do you think?

  1. Love the tiebacks for the curtains. They work really well with the poem on canvas! And I love the textured pillows!! We’re getting bored with our couch so pillows are next on our list of things to do!

  2. Ginger Bradley says:

Just amazing…..yea and dont forget the cinnamon rolls if you’re getting the swedish meatballs and of course, lingoberry!

  3. Never get the meatballs. Gotta remedy that.

  4. Ikea, Ikea, Ikea : ) Do you ever get some swedish meatballs on your weekly trips?
    Room like warm and inviting

  5. Linda says:

Ooohhh…. I love that! The pillows and the tie backs on the curtains! Looks great!

  6. Meagan says:

That’s So funny because Brinley cannot get enough of pulling our bedside table lamps on and off over….and over….and over again! she will go back and forth on the sides of the bed. It is pretty funny to watch. Our girls are twinners.

  7. Greta loves to turn the lamps on and off but there has been no yanking! …..yet.

  8. Meagan says:

Those lamps are divine! Are they BOLTED to the wall because i see Greta girl getting right up there yanking them down. I LOVE the sash for the curtains! All the colors are really coming together. LOVE this transformation!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
