Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

In the latter half of this week I turned a corner in my surgery recovery and am starting to feel so much better and even was able to get some normal clothes on a few days–more on that in a minute–which is a good thing because we are headed to Des Moines Sunday for a big, exciting project we’ll get to share soon!  I can’t thank you enough for all the support and well-wishes this week. I truly believe they are helping heal me so quickly.

Other fun things this week.

Oh man, dads of girls, melts my heart! (Don’t forget to check out our father’s day gift guide if you missed it!)

Jen’s Ikea Pax Closet makeover couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m so inspired!!

• Okay, what?! This is an outdoor sconce and this is an outdoor flush mount and I want both inside my house now!

• I’m so proud of my sister, Victoria, and in love with OLIVIA–her print now available in Jenny’s Print Shop!

• I added this week’s CLJ Q&A to my highlights on Instagram! We talked our biggest renovation regret (that we’re currently still trying to remedy and not cry about), how the cabin’s style will differ from our home, trends, compromise, marriage and more.

• Are you a baseball hat person? I bought my first this week, after always wanting to be but never sure I could pull it off. My friend picked out the perfect one for me (this one in mineral green) and I can’t wait to wear it all summer!

• Go listen to ep #216 and #217 of The Life Coach School Podcast! The episodes are called Vital Changes with Shira Gill and Organization with Shira Gill. I listened to both while tidying up my house one Saturday (before my surgery) and they really resonated with me. I consider myself a fairly organized person with little emotional attachment to material things, but yet I look at our kitchen cabinets and we have sets and sets of plates and cups and silverware and so many mugs and kids plates and pots and pans that we never use! We have no spare cabinet space and it makes no sense. As soon as I am cleared for more activity, I’m going through all my kitchen cabinets and paring down. I’m thinking about making it a sort of challenge we can all do together. Sound fun?

• Now that I interact a lot more with all of you on a daily basis on Instagram Stories, I get a lot more questions about what I’m wearing. This week, I wore a lot of pajamas and sweats, but I also wore:

This striped shirt dress (so breezy and comfy)
These boyfriend jeans and this blue striped short-sleeved button up (sleeve length is so good)
These cropped wide legged jeans and gray pocket tee
These adidas leggings (athleisure for the win!) and green tie-front top
• And I either wear my go-to black slides, or leather woven ones (mine are from ae and sold out but these look identical and are under $10) every day!

If you aren’t already following along on Instagram, @chrislovesjulia, we’re sharing a start to finish backyard makeover this weekend–starting today!–you won’t want to miss. See you over there!

    Hi-
LOVE these pendants. can you tell me the specifics of the ones you got? globe v ball? and what sized cord and color brass!!

    thanks!!

  2. Paige says:

Ok… your artificial silver dollar euculyptus stems… I tried ordering the ones from Amazon you have linked somewhere, but they are not very good fakes. :( Are your actual stems available anymore? Are they McGee and Co? I love love yours, and want some so badly! But I am picky like you!! :)

Julia – LOVE your blog! It is the first thing I read each morning. Writing today to thank you for sharing your sister’s artwork. My goodness, what an incredible talent! I am an artist…trapped in a Tech career because it pays the bills. Victoria’s work is so similar to my own that it literally brought tears to my eyes scrolling through her Etsy site. How I have missed drawing and painting. It has been YEARS since I picked up a pencil. Thank you both for making my day with your beauty and inspiration!

  4. Kates says:

YEA FOR DES MOINES!!! Dubuque is way better thought LOL! I loved your design regrets comment! So sorry to hear you have to redo the flooring! Such a nightmare!

Glad to hear your feeling better too!

  5. Sarah says:

We had/are having a VERY similar experience with plumbing problems post-renovation. So frustrating. Thank you so much for being open about it— it’s actually made me feel 100x better that something like this could happen to very experienced home renovators, too. I hope it gets resolved for you as quickly (and cheaply) as possible!

  6. Jeanne says:

Thank you so much for openly sharing what goes wrong in your projects (dings in the marble, issues with toilet drainage that make for a much bigger problem). I feel a lot of pressure to make my renovations look PERFECT after seeing all these no blemish versions that are posted on all the blogs. It’s so nice to hear not everything goes smoothly for you guys too. And encouraging to keep going with projects even after they have some hiccups!

  7. Jessica says:

    Ahh! Welcome to Des Moines!!

  8. Blu says:

So glad you’re doing better! Would the challenge just be for the kitchen?

    • Julia says:

What would you like to tackle?

      • Bryn says:

Clothes/closet/dresser drawers. I’ve read Konamari, but still need a push (kick?!) to get rid of clothes I don’t regularly wear, but think I may one day. May be a good tie in as you move back into yours.

  9. Lindsey F says:

Obsessed with that print! Buying one!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
