A Peek Into our Toy Storage in the Playroom

April 27, 2016

We believe we should all love where we live.

We’re a couple of homebodies, working to uncover the home our home wants to be. And we’re so happy to have you here.

Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

We’ve had our toy storage for a couple months now (in their proper spot for a few weeks) so I figured it was high time I show them off and give you an initial review. And since we recently hung this large canvas print from Anewall above the dressers, this portion of the room is finally feeling presentable. If you remember this post, from back in January, I ordered two of these chests from Urban Outfitters for about $300 a piece.

Online, although the description said “white” they definitely looked like more of a natural wood with brass hardware, but I can assure you, it is a warm white with a little bit of a distressed look but not enough to put them in the shabby chic category. The hardware and label holder is painted in the same white. You’ll probably notice we haven’t labeled the drawers yet, although things definitely have their place, there are a lot of empty drawers still, too.

So far, Greta’s toys are mostly on the top row (her Littlest Pet Shops and Shopkins she’s especially protective of), while Faye’s play food or the toys they both gravitate toward, like Play-doh, are stashed in lower drawers so they’re accessible by both girls.

I really wanted separate compartments, or in this case drawers, for each toy so that it would be easy to keep them organized and I’m happy to report, this chest has been great for that. The drawers are just the right size to fit a stack of paper or coloring books and are easy to take out (another bonus!), so often times, the girls will remove an entire drawer to play with and then clean it up and put it back when they’re done.

There’s no glider on the box end, but there are rails to keep the drawers solidly in place.

With our sectional arriving today, this room is just about wrapped up and I’m excited to share pulled back photos really soon. But despite not having a couch or window treatments or all of the art on the wall, the girls have been playing so well down here and we are so happy to have a dedicated space carved out in our home for just that. How do you keep the toys wrangled?

What do you think?

    Hello!
Love this playroom! It doesn’t look like wayfair has this table anyone. By any chance do you remember the name of it to do an internet search?

  2. Jeni says:

I’m thinking about buying this chest for my daughter’s room. Did you anchor it to the wall?

    Thanks!

  3. Jen says:

Perfection (of course—you guys impress me again and again)! One quick question: Do you think these drawers would work for CD storage? I have a husband who refuses to get rid of his massive collection (worked at a music store for through college and grad school), even though they’re all in iTunes now. The UO website doesn’t give drawer dimensions; any chance you can throw a CD in there and give me an idea of how many each drawer might fit? Thank you!

    • Julia says:

Hahaha, I bet they would! We,unfortunately, have zero CDs left so I can’t even tell you how many, but each here are the drawer dimensions: 11.5″l x 9.5″d x 5″h

  4. Kacey says:

Julie: how is the rug on rug action going (ok, that sounds weird…). Thinking of adding a area rug onto of our wall to wall carpet and concerned about shifting, corners rolling, etc. Just curious to see if you are experiencing this or if its too early to tell.

  5. Jeanna says:

It looks great so far! Can’t wait to see the entire room :)

  6. Kristen says:

That storage looks perfect for your girls! I like the “play” letters that you painted to display on top too.

  7. KIm says:

The room is really looking great, and so functional! I’ve been crushing on a canvas at anewall. Are you happy with the quality? Did you get the canvas stretched or rolled?

  8. Those chests are MADE for a playroom, especially with how easy those drawers pull out! Also, love the doggie print. :D

  9. Tara S says:

Thanks for the review. I’m confused about the drawers. From the website, I definitely did not think the drawers were painted. It looks like raw pine wood. They don’t even state the drawers are painted in the description. Were you surprised? I’m sure its just the lighting of the picture but your pieces look so much more white than the pictures on the website. The functionality of them seem awesome. You cant beat that amount of storage. I love that little Faye can carry a drawer by herself.

    • Julia says:

On their site, it says the piece is white so I was crossing my fingers it would be despite looking like raw wood. So I was relieved. Honestly, if it was raw wood, I probably would have painted it myself. I’m going to upload a photo to their reviews so others can see the true color. :)

      • Allison says:

Even the hardware looks like it has more of a champagne tone, I like the way it looks in your pics much better than on their site!

  10. I love all the separate compartments! I finished basement is near the top of our wish list for our next house, so that we can have more space for the kids to just be kids (their rooms just feel a little too snug with all the stuff). How nice that they can take the drawers out and put them back themselves!
