In this episode we cover a lot of ground, starting with upcoming bathroom renovation plans. We talk about a common sentiment regarding tubs in the master bath, and why we think it’s wrong. We also discuss incorporating the tastes and even sentimental decor items of your significant other into your home’s decor, even and especially when that is sports paraphernalia. And how bringing those items into the rest of the home, in a cohesive way, may just quash a man’s desire to have a man cave.

General Discussion: Are Tubs in the Master Bath Really Necessary for Resale?
We’re addressing the last big layout decision we need to make on our Master Bathroom, which many of you weighed in on. We go over some of our plans, what we think we’ll do in our space once we start it, and why we’re not convinced tubs in a Master Bath are really all that important for resale.

Reader Question: How to Incorporate Sports Paraphernalia Into Our Home’s Decor
Working items that are important and meaningful to your significant other into your home’s decor can be tricky, but nowhere is this more true than with sports paraphernalia. While I’m not a sports watching guy, Jules still gives some great tips about why it’s important to have everyone in your home represented by the decor in your home, and how you can go about that specifically with sports-related decor.

1. Vintage Framed Sports Photo (or any athletic photo printed in black and white with a nice white mat and thin, black frame.
2. Heritage Football. Go for worn leather sports paraphernalia over a brand new ball.
3. Pennant. Pennants have a natural sports look to them and are trending.
4. These wall hangers for any time of ball are perfect for incorporating those vintage ones from #2 into your gallery wall.
5. Trophy
6. Put a bunch of old baseballs into some sort of vessel, like a large mason jar.
7. Vintage pins for the shelf for the bowling lover. Love the colors here!
8. String an old pair of boxing gloves onto a hook mounted on a piece of wood. These gloves are perfect!
9. Trophies. You can’t have too many trophies…even if you didn’t win them.
10. Baseball bat shelf.
11. Lacross shelf. (You can also just mount actual bats, sticks, skis, etc. to the wall!)

Here are the pictures of Emma’s space:

Hot Topic: Man Caves
This is a topic on which not all of us agree, and I have my own opinions on it (not a fan of the concept of a man cave). But we talk about how we view man caves and the idea of having your space your in home that you can get away and decompress. We talk about some possible reasons why man caves have turned into such a big thing, and what a potential antidote is.

Game: Google Translate Home Design Terms
Based on Jimmy Fallon’s Google Translate Karaoke, I ran a bunch of home design terms (from this article) through several languages on Google Translate and back to English. I give the resulting term, and ask Julia and Preston to guess at the originating term. They actually get a couple, which is a couple more than I thought they would.

Can’t Get You Outta My Mind
Preston: Preston just moved his office out of his home into a separate space. He talks about the lessons he’s learned in being present and focused on the moment, and how it’s improved his productivity on his business, and his happiness at home.

Chris: I’ve personally had times where I’ve struggled with satisfaction in my own life, and I know a lot of other people feel the same way at one time or another. But recently I’ve realized what has changed that for me, and how actively creating something has made such a difference in my own personal happiness.

Julia: Julia talks about the app Continual, which is not free, but is amazing. Most of us have probably dealt with the annoying 15 second time limit on Instagram Stories, but Continual fixes that issue by breaking up any video on your phone automatically.

What do you think?

  1. Thanks for sharing this Julia, really enjoyed reading the article.

As a huge sports aficionado, having worked in the snooker industry for many years, I have mounds of sport related decor around my home.

I absolutely love the items you have posted in the article :) I think retro items can actually enhance rooms within the home massively.

I have an antique snooker table in one of my spare rooms, which is such a strong centre-piece for the overall layout.

  2. Rachel says:

You mentioned in your last podcast that Polly is truly sleeping through the night now and in this podcast you mentioned you feed her every two hrs. Could you write down what her schedule is for the entire day? Maybe do a separate post if you want but I am struggling with sleep with our little guy. He’s the same age as Polly and has a very consistent bedtime 7pm but gets up at 1:00 then every two hrs (if I’m lucky) until moring and it feels like once he wakes in the middle of the night wants to just nurse all night. Add to that we just had the time Change which was terrible he just out grew the rock and play which he had been sleeping in and he had been falling asleep nursing simce birth so we are trying to break that habit. Thank you for any more advice or just more details on everything you do with Polly feeding and sleep both day and night.

    • Julia says:

I feed her every 2-3 hours from 8am-7:30pm and then she sleeps from then-8am. I generally follow the eat, awake, sleep routine during the day. She is only awake for 60-90 minutes at a time right now and then naps and as soon as she wakes up I feed her. And then we play, read books, tummy time until she seems tired and I lay her down for a nap.

      Things you might consider:
Cluster feeding: Try feeding baby twice about an hour apart before bed. Polly generally falls asleep at night nursing and I’m fine with it. It’s a peaceful way to fall asleep and she still sleeps through the night.

It sounds like you have a consistent bed time down–great! A warm bath at the same time, with a lotion massage after really help. Make sure there is absolutely no talking and very dim lights after bath.

Is your baby in their own room? If not, that’s also key! Sometimes babies grunt or cry for a few seconds during the night but we wake them up thinking they are ready to eat. If baby does start moving around or making noise, think if it’s an actual cry and if so, count to 60 before tending to them.

I swear by a sound machine and swaddle–only at night!

      Hope this helps.

Hello! Love your podcasts! Quick question about cabinet hardware: We have dark wood cabinetry without hardware in our kitchen/laundry room/bathrooms, and we have bronze light fixtures/door knobs. We recently installed nickel hardware in the kitchen for some contrast against the dark cabinets. Do you think its important to install nickel hardware in the bathroom as well to be consistent throughout the house, or are we able to install brass hardware? (I ask because we know that we will move in a couple years, and I don’t want to do something that will turn away potential buyers) Thank you SO much for your help!!

  4. Tara says:

Hi, this is actually not a comment on this episode of the podcast, but in your recent episode you mentioned how important reader engagement is to your business. It sounds dumb to say, but I had never thought of that before. I just wanted to drop a note about episode 34 when Julia mentioned that she loves flannel sheets. I do too! Now that the weather is cold again, I just bought flannel sheets for my 3 year old and I hope she loves them as much as I did growing up.

  5. Carmen says:

Hey, great podcast as always! For your reader’s question, why not move the desk to the opposite corner and pull the seating and tv over closer to where the desk currently sits. This will eliminate the need to have to walk “through his office” to lounge in the living room. She could possibly put up a screen to give him a bit of privacy or hide what he’s working on from company

  6. Beth says:

Enjoyed the podcast! I totally agree about not needing a tub. I’ve been considering the same, but a little differently. We will be renoing our master bath/closet in a few years, and our closet and bathroom are just soooo tiny. The master bedroom itself is ok but can’t lend extra space, so I’ve been thinking of taking the hall/guest bath it shares a wall with, and taking that hall bath’s bathtub/shower away entirely to make the master feel appropriately sized. Make that bathroom a powder room, and give the master a decent closet and 3 piece bath (again, just a shower no bath). There’d still be a basement bathroom with a shower/tub combo so the next buyer (in 15+ years) would still have a bathroom. I just can’t imagine that resolving our master’s glaring issues is anything but a bonus, even if it changes our house from 3 full baths to 1 full, 1 3/4, and 1 half.

Besides, wouldn’t you rather use a 1/2 bath as a guest than a full? Is that weird? I don’t want to see other people’s tubs/showers when I use their bathroom, along with their towels and tub toys and all that. I feel like that’s a weird preference but I stand by it!

  7. Candace says:

We’ve been collecting vintage sports memorabilia for a while now. Check out Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill, and vintage/antique shops. OOO And etsy! We have some awesome old skis, tennis rackets, an old sled, and some ~1920s baseball mitts. Now, the hard part…. finishing the basement! :-o

  8. Kayla says:

What about running medals and army awards? It kills me that my husband wants to display all his. I’m just as content stuffing mine in a drawer. I have no idea how to display them and make them blend in with the decor.

    • Kara says:

Could you have a few favorites of his framed like this? https://www.pinterest.com/pin/289285976044670561/
      or even this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/60728294950542414/

To me it looks a little better than the displays with a ton of hooks and them all just hanging there.

    • Beth says:

Running medals- I took mine off the long/wide/crazy colored ribbons for wearing, and put a little loop of red skinny ribbon through them, use them as Christmas tree ornaments. I enjoy them that 1 time of year and that’s enough for me.

Army awards- my husband got a ton of coins/awards in the Air Force and we put them in a wood case with a glass front (like a shadowbox, we added foam with a nice fabric wrapped around it so the coins are pressed taut against the glass front) so we have the 1 case hanging up with them all visible inside.

  9. Kathy says:

What about Gwen’s ORC from a few years ago when she did the basement/mancave for her husband? http://www.themakerista.com/one-room-challenge-week-6-reveal/ It was on my mind as soon as I saw the topic of this podcast. She always kills it!

  10. Amanda says:

Love the podcast but this one’s sound quality is off. I always listen to this podcast in my car on my way to work on my iPhone and this episode was much quieter than all of the previous ones, almost impossible for me to hear. Also there is a fuzzy “shhhh” sound in the background when Julia talks, and sometimes when Preston talks. Just a heads up!

  11. Kara says:

My husband loves disc golf, so when we set up our office (his space), I found some pretty Patent art on Etsy of the disk and basket and framed it. He loves it and it looks great and intentional.

    Here’s an example: http://etsy.me/2ArC7sI

  12. Julia says:

Hi guys, I know tons of people commented on your bathroom dilemma but listening to your podcast I had a few thoughts. I personally LOVE baths, so would want a tub in the master bath unless it is so small that it can only fit a shower. BUT, if you are not planning on selling your house in the near future, then make it comfortable for your needs and chances are, when you do sell and if someone really likes baths like me, they may want to reno the space anyway because by that time it won’t look super new and fresh anymore most likely…
What I also thought about is if I was living in your house with 3 kids, I would have all of their bedrooms downstairs (when baby is older) so that they are all together. That would leave the upstairs nursery for a nice guest bedroom and guests would not have to share family space downstairs. That would mean though that the powder room upstairs needs a shower – so, while renoing the master bath, I would see if there is a way to incorporate a shower into the powder room.
But I totally get that every family is different and this may never work for how you guys use your space.
Cheers and happy bathroom planning :)

  13. Carrie says:

This was timely for me as I was begrudgingly hanging up some of my husbands sports paraphernalia. Unfortunately it isn’t really art but he loves it so I guess I’ll have to fine it a place.
The podcast was really fuzzy listening through iTunes when Preston and Julia talked. Chris’s mike wasn’t picking up so much static. Just a little feedback as I know Preston moved all his recording stuff and the setup is new.
    Thanks!

Anyone else not seeing this episode in the “Podcast” app?

  15. Angela says:

My husband isn’t home enough to get a man-cave. I have a space, though, that is basically an office/craft room/dumping ground. I’m home a ton so it’s important for me to have my own area.

  16. lauren says:

Piggy-backing on this mancave decor discussion, we are remodeling our basement now. Its the only room my husband cares more about in the house than me, though we both have had input on everything we have done, I have just cared more than him, if that makes sense. We are debating on wall sconces right now- we don’t agree on any styles really. Its for a theater room – but I don’t want it too ‘theme-y’ and he wants something with a low profile (meaning no arm that sticks out) because the room is somewhat narrow. We need many of them, so cost is a factor (trying to stay under $75 each). They need to be dimmable. Any ideas? I found something similar to the light you used on your front step, but a dual ight. He wasn’t convinced of it. Everything I see is brushed chrome… aack! ha ha ha!

  17. Cara says:

Hey love the podcast but please don’t play that google game again ????????????????
