Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Yesterday was a perfect fall day, I wish we could hold onto it forever. 60 degrees and the most gorgeous fall leaves lining our property. We turned on our fireplace (we recently converted it to gas! details on that soon) and sat outside and soaked it all in. We put our deck furniture in storage for the winter and I’m going to miss looking outside and seeing this every day.

More fun things this week!

@thefauxmartha is one of my favorite Instagram accounts to follow and yesterday she had this beautiful graphic in her stories. When I told her how gorgeous it was, she said “I edited it in snapped and did the text overlay in there! It was magic.” So, she’s a magician in every sense.

This bow-neck sweater from JCrew Factory would be so beautiful in holiday pictures!

• Every guy at every hardware store…(I am STILL cracking up!)

• How cool is this hand vase? (Do you think it comes with those florals? ;)

• I know it’s not even Halloween yet, but I’m already stocking up on this Kraft Gold gift wrap and the matte black is equally amazing. Chicest gifts ever.

• Sometimes when I’m nursing Polly, I buy things and then I forget about it until they arrive, sometimes I don’t even remember buying it–it’s dangerous. And I’ve done this with baby.  I’ve order art, home decor, clothing, shoes. Last night, at 4:30 am I bought these Birkenstocks for something warm and cozy to slip on during the colder months and this morning, I’m questioning…are they cute? Or were my feet just cold?

• The other day I snapped this photo with my phone when I caught Faye talking to herself in the mirror. I remember, as a little girl, doing the same thing when I would do “Cleaning Shows” while it was my turn to clean the bathroom. Which, I mean, why aren’t cleaning shows a thing!?  (See more of their bathroom, with all the sources, here!)

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! We have so many big projects coming up, it almost feels like this is our last weekend to just relax until Christmas!

What do you think?

  1. Emily says:

I am in the middle of a Birkenstock love affair so I support the purchase, impulse or not! I lived in my Mayaris this summer and was mourning having to put them away for the fall/winter when I found Sarnia boots… hello new staple boots! I am breaking them in now and so excited! (Also eying Amsterdam, the Taupe is sorta chic, right?…someone stop me!) Enjoy your cozy feet!!!

  2. Cassie says:

I think the birks are cute! But I’m not some posh New Yorker: I’m a New Englander, so I’m thinking we’re in the same general head space on practicality and warmth! I’ve been looking at some of their clogs myself – maybe for the Christmas list. You go, mama. Your feet will be happy :)

  3. Cloe says:

Can totally relate to middle of the night feeding/shopping sprees! Have you seen that meme where Maury says: you claimed breast feeding would save money. Your online shopping while nursing has determined that was a lie. Ha!

  4. Megan says:

I did the exact same thing when nursing my babies! They were both born in the fall and I swear I did most of my Christmas shopping (and impulse shopping) during their first few months of life. I just completely weaned my youngest baby as of yesterday (he’s 13 months old now) which will hopefully mean more sleep for me, but definitely less middle of the night shopping. Enjoy that precious time with your baby. As I’m sure you know, it’s bittersweet when the breastfeeding journey comes to an end.

  5. Amy says:

So I’m currently nursing and I just added another thing to my Amazon cart, but here’s what saves me. I click on ‘save for later’. That way, when the fog clears I can re-evaluate if I really want or need it.

  6. Kathy says:

I had that video on a loop all day and I still cracked up each time. That’s my boyfriend in a nutshell. We have those conversations all. the. time. Before we walk into Lowes he’ll ask me, where do you think we’ll find xyz and I already have the path mapped out in my head whereas I’ll find him in electrical looking for bathroom stuff ????

  7. Megan says:

As far as cleaning shows, “How Clean Is Your House?” used to be on BBC America (I’m not sure if it still is). Two British ladies inspect your house and show you how to clean it. It was a little gross and still fun. It looks like there’s a bunch of episodes on YouTube.

  8. Stefanie says:

I used to middle of the night shop while nursing too ! I got obsessed with vienna springs ring slings and these rompers rags to raches … why is it we do that what i call dream shopping ???? maybe just too tired to feel guilt about it or rationalize it!?

  9. Brittany says:

Buying $165 shoes impulsively and forgetting about them until they arrive… that whole paragraph was one big #cantrelate moment for me & most likely everyone else, haha.

    • Jess says:

I have to agree with this comment. I do own a pair of Birkenstocks, but they had to be planned and budgeted for. I have never bought anything expensive and forgot about it!

      • Julia says:

The Birks weren’t something I forgot about–although I have forgot about purchases in the past (the buffalo print in our living room is one that comes to mind)–but they were definitely an impulse buy and it is fun to hear other mothers have similar experiences with “midnight” feedings. Also, we are very big on budgeting and have money set aside for every category in our lives–including clothing, shoes, pillows, food, dining out, home renovations, etc.

    • Lisa says:

Maybe we don’t need to relate to everything Julia says. Maybe that’s not th point. Maybe we could comment kindly or not at all..

    • Jennifer K says:

      I also #cantrelate but I #wishIcould and I #stilllikeher even if I #cantrelate!
I also can’t relate to living somewhere where they have all 4 seasons. Texas weather is
hot and we just skip right over Fall!

  10. Elizabeth says:

Umm, I totally would watch a cleaning show!! Is that weird?? Let’s be honest though, I probably still wouldn’t clean as often as I should. But at least I’d be thinking about it more, ha!

  11. Laurie says:

Nope, they’re not cute. Sorry. But not everything that’s functional has to be pretty! :)

  12. Corine says:

Ok the Birks were an excellent middle of the night buy. I’m such an impulsive shopper at 4am while feeding a baby. Someone just take my phone away! It’s too easy! Ha!! Love that sweet little shot of Faye

  13. Meghan says:

I buy things online all the time when I’m up for those late night/early morning feeds! Except for some reason it’s always seeds and gardening things but I’m not even that much of a gardener. So now I have like 30 packets of seeds that I don’t know what to with ????

  14. Jordan says:

Ah! Currently struggling with the same nursing/buying pattern. Apple Pay is tooooo easyyyyy. Ha! Love hearing these fun casual Friday updates :)

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
