Almost exactly one year ago, we installed a ceiling fan in our bedroom. We had a pretty ugly one in there for years and I was determined to find a pretty chandelier to hang in its place. But the truth is, we love sleeping with a light breeze and a modern, beautiful ceiling fan was what we needed. We have been so happy with the one we chose and don’t regret it for a second. For light, we currently use our lamps, but we do have plans to add recessed lighting.

The more I think about it, the more silly it is that so many in the design world are nixing ceiling fans so quickly in favor of a pretty light. Sometimes, a ceiling fan is a necessity! Sometimes it’s just a want. And thankfully, these days they are showing up more and more in beautifully designed spaces and there are many brands designing really pretty options. Ceiling fans can be a beautiful, functional addition to any room.

Here are eleven of our favorites (all three in the images above are featured in the round-up below as numbers 2, 7 and 6 respectively).

No. 1 | No. 2 | No. 3 | No. 4 | No. 5 | No. 6 | No. 7 | No. 8 | No. 9 | No. 10 | No. 11

If you aren’t able to hardwire a fan in place, or like the ease of portability, or maybe you’re just a seasonal fan lover–portable fans can actually be very good looking, also. Both of our daughters have grown up with a small fan on their dresser to provide white noise and a little breeze.

Here are 12 of our favorite portable fans (many under $100 and even less than $50!) that can double as a design element in any corner you like a little breeze.

No. 1 | No. 2 | No. 3 | No. 4 | No. 5 | No. 6 | No. 7 | No. 8 | No. 9 | No. 10 | No. 11 | No. 12

Anyone else glad we’re seeing a shift in the design world to more practical, functional living?

What do you think?

  1. Betty says:

I love #7 ceiling fan. I’m unable to find it. Can you
Be specific as to description or make, model of
    Fan. Thanks

  2. Rosemarie says:

I love that you posted this! We lived in Las Vegas for almost four years and air circulation was a MUST. It was so difficult to find a fan that was gorgeous and didn’t cost a fortune. We wanted to find one with a light too. EVEN harder. Here’s hoping design, function, and cost can continue to become “fashionable”!

  3. Katana says:

And guys, if you did or are planning to, PLEASE don’t throw out old ceiling fans/light fixtures into the garbage or recycling, especially if they’re more than 20 years old. Sell them online and chances are, collectors might buy them. You have read properly; there are collector forums for old fan/light fixture/furniture collectors. Please help preserve these old things! One person’s trash is another’s treasure!

  4. Steph says:

I like #8, it’s listed as an outdoor fan. Can you put it inside?

  5. Jennette says:

I have the peregrine (with light) from rejuvenation and it is soooo good, and so beautiful people actually comment on it when they see it. We are ordering another for the bedroom. I don’t get not wanting fans! They are so quiet now, I hate listening to loud, portable fans. And who wants to run air conditioning all the time throughout the whole house if you just need in a room.
Ps recently started listening to podcast and love! Helps get me through workday :)

  6. Amanda says:

Yes to practical, functional living! Just bought a small Vornado for my bedroom and will probably keep it there year round because it’s just so pretty.

  7. Tarynkay says:

I love ceiling fans as well and think it’s silly to get rid of them. They really help both AC and heat work better.

  8. Sayward says:

This is so timely for us! We’re slowly remodeling (renovating?) a foreclosure we bought 1.5 years ago and our bedroom will probably be next. My husband neeeeeds a ceiling fan. The current one above our bed doesn’t work but it’s plastic faux marbled hunter green, black, and grey with 1.5 of its 3 glass globes left. Definitely not a keeper. So although we probably won’t replace it until this winter or next spring, I’m already searching for ones that don’t make me cringe. West Elm has a few ceiling fans now and I’m leaning towards this one in either of the darker finishes! I love your fan and if it came with a light kit that’s the one we’d get. Home Depot sells a modern, matte black fan with a light kit but the reviews weren’t great and my commercial electrician husband said no way.

  9. Jen says:

We just put up this 72″ pretty beast in our two-story family room. Makes such a difference over the builder-grade 60″ fan that we replaced!

  10. Kala Morry says:

We have a stand fan that we got a few years ago from Walmart. I love it! It is really powerfull and it is all metal with an oil-rubbed bronze finish and looks antique. I wish we had bought more than one. I haven’t seen them since. They also had a matching table fan. We found a great ceiling fan wuth a more modern style we loved at Home Depot but couldn’t get it because our ceilings are shorter than 8ft and it would have hung only a few inches above my husband’s head.

  11. Ange says:

We have the no. 7 fan in our bedroom!!! We love to sleep with our ceiling fan on as well, and this one looks amazing and has 6 different speeds. We love it!!

  12. Jen says:

Any recommendations for 60″ fans with a light?

  13. Emily Head says:

I literally just bought the little portable fan #4 for my office desk about a week and a half ago! It’s the perfect tiny size!! I love it!!

  14. AlisonG says:

Kate just did a post about ceiling fans. Check out Centationalgirl.com. Not sure if it’s me our you, but your site loads really slowly now.

    • Julia says:

What browser are you using, Alison? We’ve been conducting speed tests on our end and everything is coming back good.

      • Leslie says:

I’m in the same boat, the site takes probably 3-4 times as long to load since the design refresh. Typically I read on an Android phone, Chrome browser.

      • Julia says:

Thank you for letting me know! We’ll definitely look into it.

      • Kerri says:

Mine is also super slow using Chrome on a desktop computer.

      • AlisonG says:

I use Safari on my iPad and Mozilla Firefox on the main computer. safari loads the slowest out of the two and both load ALOT slower than your site use to. The ad is the first thing to load.

    • Ange says:

I’m also finding the site is loading a lot slower. Typically the ads pop up quickly but I have to wait a couple of minutes for your blog to appear.

  15. Steph M. says:

I love sleeping with a fan year round but my husband really hates them! The compromise is a small table fam on my nightstand. I currently have a tiny USB type fan I bought from CVS (for like $5) so I’m loving these more attractive ones!

  16. Joellyn says:

My fan makes all the difference in the world to my sleep comfort. We can vouch for #5. We installed it a few months ago in our bedroom and we are so happy with it! Quiet, sleek, and effective.

  17. Kate says:

Love having a ceiling fan! I really like all the ones you posted but…none have lights! I know it’s not the prettiest but sometimes it’s just a necessity. Know of any good ones with lights?

  18. Mara Smith says:

We installed the Home Decorators Merwry fan in black matte in our living room a year ago. We loved it so much we put a white one in our sons room and just installed the black matte one again in our room on Monday. It’s a great fan with an even better price tag!

    • Kirsten says:

Want to second this model! The ones listed are lovely, but we installed these in white in all three of our bedrooms last year and love how much style they have at such a low price. They are incredibly quiet at all three speeds (none of that ridiculous clanging and clicking that so many fans have), and I love how integrated the light looks.

$99 at Home Depot if anyone is interested: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Decorators-Collection-Merwry-52-in-LED-Indoor-White-Ceiling-Fan-SW1422WH/205805875?exp=inspirational

    • Katie says:

We just bought a home and installed the Merwry fans in all four bedrooms, black in the master and kids’ room, and white in the nursery and what we use as our playroom. Both colors look great. I’m pregnant, due early October, and these fans have been lifesavers! We open the windows and turn on the ceiling fans at night to cut on cooling costs for our large, old home. I saw a link above that they are on sale at Home Depot, we actually bought ours off ebay for a great deal! We will probably install one in our living room as well.
