Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

In this week’s podcast (live now, right here!) we talk a little bit about some upcoming projects we’re gearing up to tackle, including the guest room. Our previous guest room, that is now the girls’ bunk room, was thrown together in 2 weeks before my sister came to stay with us. It served us well for 3 years before transforming into what it is today.

Since wrapping up the One Room Challenge, we moved the army blanket wrapped bed into Greta’s old room (I’ll snap a picture as soon as the sun comes up!) and donated the nightstands and lamps to a family that needed them thinking I would have plenty of time to find something else before our guests started rolling in for the holidays. But here we are, 2 weeks prior to welcoming family from out of town and our current guest room situation stands wanting.

I could just take down the kitty posters Greta since hung in her old room, and magic eraser the crayon off the wall in the corner, but since most of our guests stay a couple weeks at a time, rather than a couple days (although we get those too!), it’s important to us to make sure they are comfortable and we’re comfortable knowing the conditions of the room. So, this weekend, I put together a plan, secured a budget of less than $2000 and started ordering a few things, including the following:

mood-board-for-the-guest-room

1. Dark Moss Pillow my favorite color! $30
2. Faux Fur Lumbar Pillow for soft texture on the bed $65
3. Tufted Dot Coverlet in case they get too cold…or too hot $189
4. Flannel Light Gray Ticking Stripe Duvet on sale! $79
5. Brass and Leather Luggage Rack schmancy $51
6. A Slight Chance by Kelly Money because is there anything more gorgeous to dream under? starting at $31
7. One of a Kind Zanjan Persian Rug $495 (my one splurge!)
8. Prettiest Iron Panel Bed–at the best price, because I checked everywhere! $219 for a queen
9. Wall Sconce (we actually had these stored from a room they didn’t work in) $199
10. WiFi Password Printable for the nightstand $4
11. Crescent Moon Catch-All for their jewelry or change at night $14
12. 36″ Round Mirror because every guest room must have a mirror $150
13. Wall-Mounted Storage Shelf we’re gonna use as nightstands–great reviews! $169

I’m still deciding on a paint color, but other than everything is en route and it should be a pretty quick and straight-forward makeover. knocking on all the wood. We’re not doing any crazy wall treatments or paper–for now, anyway. Just paint and furnishings. And I think we’ll definitely have to put a little Christmas tree somewhere in the room, too. :) Anyone else hosting guests this season?

What do you think?

  1. Amy says:

How is your metal bed holding up. I want to buy one and want it to be sturdy and heavy.

  2. Jessika says:

I’m just curious how the bed frame has held up for you? I’ve been eyeing it for quite a while but the reviews are mixed. Thanks for your feedback! I love your style.

  3. Amanda says:

Beautiful! What color will you paint the walls?

  4. Caylin says:

I ADORE this room! Is the bed black or oiled bronze?

  5. Chelsea says:

I can’t find that luggage rack anywhere! It’s perfect!

  6. Kelley Brown says:

I love this bed and I don’t think wayfarer has it anymore!! Any tips for another bed similar, with a good price!!

  7. Jennifer says:

Gorgeous!! Is the bed dark bronze or black? I am basically designing my whole gust room around this one and can’t tell. I would prefer black but can’t find it.

  8. Steff says:

    Thank you!

  9. Steff says:

Hello! Do you know the make/model of the bed frame? Your link is not working but I would love to purchase that frame! Thanks in advance for your help. This room is gorgeous.

  10. Gwen says:

PLEASE don’t paint that pink and white room. It would bring so much unexpected class to any room.

  11. Kacey says:

can you please bottle up that energy and quick decision making?! Please! :)

  12. Mary says:

Look at you! You are Johhny-on-the-spot! Thanks for the quick response.

  13. Mary says:

When you order a rug from esale, does it come already clean? Or will I need to have it professionally cleaned after it arrives?

  14. Jaclyn says:

Adore the swing arm in lieu of a table lamp – saves so much space. These are the ones I’m loving:

  15. Cindy says:

    Beautiful plans!
I love the slightly passive aggressive WiFi printable … ‘a while’ means a period of time, ‘awhile’ means a short time :)

  16. Kelsey says:

We have this bed in our guest room and my biggest hurdle was figuring out what to do with the box spring! I didn’t want to use a bed skirt because I don’t love ’em, and I wasn’t about to leave it bare. We ended up covering the box spring with leftover fabric (read: curtain panels I wasn’t using ?) that matched the sheets. Super great bed though, an amazing score for the price!

  17. Renee says:

We have this bed in our guest room and love it! Can’t wait go see the finished product!

  18. I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

  19. Kelly McK says:

    Love, love, LOVE!

  20. Alexis says:

Ha! I just pulled my guest room apart in order to get it redone before guests arrive. Amazing how having someone to stay can motivate you to get things done.

Hopefully my time management skills are up to it!

  21. Sara says:

I can’t wait to see it all come together! But you guys sure are nice. I have a max of three days for guests in my house. Kinda like fish, after three days, it starts to kinda stink. HA! And that’s family or friends, doesn’t matter. I just can’t handle it. :o

  22. Barb says:

You should check Walmart! I was amazed to find a bed just like yours for $158 with free shipping for our guest room…

  23. Amanda says:

Oh that coverlet! Might need to add that to my guest room as well.

  24. Kristen says:

Love the new guest room plans! I just refinished an iron bed for our guest bedroom and I love it! Our holiday hosting duties are over (we hosted Thanksgiving) but our guest rooms still need work. Hoping to get lots of inspiration from your makeover! :)

  25. Lindsey says:

Consider BM edgecomb gray or shaker beige for paint!

  26. Sarah G. says:

I’m in the process of redoing my master bedroom and this is might as well be the design board for that project too. So happy to see this post this morning!

  27. Neale says:

You guys just get better and better… The brass luggage rack is such a thoughtful little touch. Love this so much!!!

  28. Allison says:

My parents put luggage racks in their guest rooms and it’s soooooo nice.

  29. Love ALL your plans – can’t wait to see it all put together.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
