A Few Updates in the Entry

November 22, 2016

We believe we should all love where we live.

We’re a couple of homebodies, working to uncover the home our home wants to be. And we’re so happy to have you here.

Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

To know me, is to know our entry will never be done. It’s alway evolving. So, don’t take this post as, the entry reveal. This is more of a–we’ve made a lot of great updates in the past couple months and here is what it looks like now.

A layered entry look

The first big change was this long vintage runner from The Vintage Rug Shop. I love the layered look over our FLOR carpet squares. Even though the FLOR squares are washable, the runner adds an extra element of camouflage, too. Charly can’t resist it.

Hooks on wallpaper!

The second change was adding three more of these hooks to the back wall. While we added a coat closet, off the laundry room, to our home last year (can you believe our house never had one?), it’s still nice to have a place to conveniently hang our every-day gear–backpacks, jackets, diaper bags. Four hooks for a family of 4 should have been plenty, but we have company so often, it’s nice to have a few extra available for guests.

Love this large leaning mirror

Of course that meant the mirror that used to be on that wall needed to be moved. For a little while, this large Blu Dot floor length mirror was moved to our room, but I couldn’t find the perfect one for this entry before our Friendsgiving, so I moved it here and it’s kind of nice! I like the height it adds and who doesn’t love a leaning mirror (this one is secured to the wall so it won’t tip)? The only downside is it’s too narrow for the wall, which is where a large plant comes into play. Is the plant kind of dead? Yes. But it’s also kind of alive, so we’re attempting to nurse it back to health--although in the back of my mind I already ordered this Faux Fiddle Leaf as a permanent, will-never-die-on-me replacement.

Entry looking into a jewel-toned room

The last big change in recent months was the railing and a new door earlier this year.

Horizontal railing and vintage rug

Like I said, the entry is ever-evolving. We have plans to work on the stairwell a little more this winter and maybe one day I’ll find the perfect perfect mirror, but for now, we feel refreshed with the changes. Change is good for that and sometimes it just takes shifting a few things around in your own home.

Let’s end with where we started–the entry when we moved in, and now.

before-and-after

Pret-ty satisfying.

What do you think?

  1. Lauren says:

I am shocked by the before and after pics. What vision you have! What paint color was used for the entry?

  2. Beatrice Teller says:

Did you say your FLOR squares are washable……like put it in the washer washable?

    • Chris says:

No, not in the washer. They have a thick rubber backing so that would be a bad idea, haha. But we’ve washed them with our pressure washer, and we also have them professionally cleaned whenever we get our carpets downstairs cleaned.

  3. Kristen says:

I love your entry! It feels like such a great representation of the rest of your home, a perfect way to welcome guests.

  4. Stacey says:

The link for the vintage rug shop seems to be sending me to Go Daddy. Any chance you could let me know the link? I’m drooling over your layered rug look – it’s fantastic!

  5. abby says:

oh myyyyy–everything is beautiful, but especially that railing! i LOVE it!

  6. Beatriz says:

I spy a new chair in your room!!! Will there be a blog post about it? I so love your home and your blog!

I spy a new chair in your room!!! Will there be a blog post about it? I so love your home and your blog!!

  8. I really love where it is now. And, I agree… you have so many seating options nearby that I love the height that the mirror and plant add to the long space. Perfection!

  9. Courtney says:

I can’t quite figure it out; where does the new door lead to? (It’s a beautiful door, by the way!)

  10. kim says:

Yes, please please please get that faux fiddle leaf fig! I want to hear from someone I trust before I pull the trigger myself. I love how Charly always looks so darn comfy!

  11. Erin says:

What a great refresh, I love your modern spin on traditional style. Diggin’ the small glimpses of the other rooms in these photos-I spy a cool new chair in the boudior! Also, a tall snake plant would look so good next to that mirror, not quite so top heavy to block the nice lines you have created in the entry but still a pop of green and they require so little care. Never had a trusty snake plant poop out on me. Love your new winter family pic!

What a crazy change! Love everything you do :)

  13. Kira says:

Love love love! Rug and mirror are on point. Looks great Julia ;)

Fun to see the evolution. Some spots in our house never seem “finished” so it’s good to know it happens to others too! The link to the runner appears to be incorrect. I clicked and got a Go Daddy search results for “Vintage Rug Shop.” When I googled “the vintage rug shop” it comes up. Just a heads up.

  15. Mary says:

The vintage rug shop website is thevintagerugshop.com.
I think your link is wrong. :-)

Curious if you considered crown molding? The ceiling seems a little low for crown molding ( I can’t tell really) but it might look good.

  16. Sarah says:

Love the mirror! How did you secure it to the wall? We just bought our first house this summer and are slowly learning the DIY ropes and could use some tips. Thanks!

  17. Jessica says:

I have that same Flor carpet. Mine discoloured though. Oh well

Really thinking about picking up some of these vintage rugs. They are all over my Instagram and really add life to the space.

    Great post!

  18. Catherine Tornow says:

Would you mind sharing the source of the lighting pendant?

  19. Elizabeth says:

I love how much the stair rail updates this space! And that wallpaper is still one of my favorite things ever! It all looks amazing!

  20. Ginger says:

Every version has been lovely! Would you mind sharing the size of your new rug? I’m scoping out a vintage rug too, and am trying to visualize whether it has the right dimensions. Your space looks similarly long. Thanks!

  21. Katy says:

Love it! Do you miss having a bench to put your shoes on or set things down as you come in?

    • Julia says:

That was a concern, but when I asked Chris he said he literally never say down on the bench. Haha. We do have couches and chairs surrounding the entry and I think the benches ended up collecting things instead of being a place to sit for shoes.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
