Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Today’s a big day, er night, on the blog. For years, I have felt there was a void in the home blogging world of photos and details of our spaces at night. You’ve seen bright, airy kitchens and light pouring into our bedrooms. We set our watches to photograph a room around the sun, and then we brighten them more. But, we live and love our homes even when the sun goes down. Sometimes, ESPECIALLY when the sun goes down (the kids are in bed, streets are quiet, snacks are had). And that representation has been sorely missed until now. Earlier this summer, I pitched the idea to my friend Kim of Yellow Brick Home to see if she would help me start up a new quarterly series where we, and a few of the best home bloggers share their spaces and rituals at night. Rejuvenation jumped on as a sponsor, we asked 6 of our best blog friends to join for the first installment and we’re calling it A Night In.

You’ve seen this room a million times over during the day. Our reading room has a full wall of windows, so it’s completely transformative at night when the sun stops pouring in. The dark green walls nearly blend into the now-black windows and it’s the coziest. Charly likes to join us.

You may notice, we recently switched a few things around. We sold our light upholstered sofa and settled on a black leather one (more on that in an upcoming post!) that fit the vibe in here a little better. Moved the Minted print that was in the entry in here and introduced this Cylindar Floor Lamp from Rejuvenation.

It’s substantial, sophisticated, and the black piping around the shade is as good in the day as at night. I love the way it lights up our deep green walls (paint color is Pine Grove by Clark + Kensington) and the cylinder base is perfection. It has two bulbs in it, so we can adjust the lighting to be dimmer if we want.

After we put the girls to bed, we tidy up, turn on all the accent lighting on the main floor (my favorite everything-feels-cleaner trick) and put on my favorite Evening Acoustic playlist on Spotify. Note: Many of you have asked about the music on my Instagram Stories. So many are from that playlist–it’s a favorite for winding down. I might finish up a blog post or instagram while Chris responds to emails before we unplug, head to the kitchen to make some nice cream (this is my favorite, easy recipe) and talk about the highs and lows of our work days and how cute the girls were getting their faces painted that day.

I remember when Greta and Faye were babies, I would miss them so much when they went to bed, that I would quietly creep into their rooms and look at them (creep is a good word, I guess haha) or try to convince Chris, “Let’s wake her up!” The moments of wanting to wake them up are long passed, but it still amazes me how I could go from so worn from the day’s events of being a mom, to missing them running around and chatting my ear off in less than an hour.

These rooms look different at night because the sun is down and lamps are on and there is an undeniable quiet coziness that I crave all day long. But then also, they feel different because they transform from the kid-friendly part of our family-friendly design sense to spaces Chris and I enjoy as adults–even if that’s just sitting on a couch for the first time that day with all the toys that were scattered around the room tucked in a basket and a blanket thrown on top.

If you’re interested, you can see more of our home and the sources for everything in it, on our Shop Our House page. Now, go check out the homes of our friends: Yellow Brick Home, The Makerista, House Tweaking, Making it Lovely, The Faux Martha, and BrittanyMakes to see how their spaces change when the sun goes down. Spoiler alert: They’re just as breath-taking.

Special thanks to Rejuvenation for sponsoring and providing the lighting for the first installment of A Night In. We’re so excited to share more rooms in our home with you every few months as a part of this new series. Which room should we do next? Any favorite bloggers you’d like us to invite on?

What do you think?

Love this idea of night photos and your amazing reading room! We have the same routine, toys are put away, kids off to bed and then we turn on our accent lighting, light a candle and unwind – it always feels so cozy! Love your blog and looking forward to listening to your podcasts on the way to work! Would love to be considered for future blogging collaborations (@1111lightlane/1111lightlane.com). We are also IKEA kitchen owners and love all things diy, renovation, and home decor :)

  2. Josh L says:

I am obsessed with this idea. As a non-blogger DIY homeowner I am always dissatisfied with my work/home/photos until golden hour. I’m always chasing the lighting I’m seeing in other peoples homes. Its great and refreshing to see that more honest photo. Your home is very beautiful in the light and the evening, but the evening photos are more in line with what I’m used to in my own home. Thanks so much!

  3. Laura says:

Where did you get that couch in the reading room? I must have missed that post :'(

  4. Alison G says:

Sponsored post very well done. Yes, invite @deucecitieshenhouse, and @cathyposhusta.

  5. Alison G says:

Great new series. Your so right you don’t see night photos. I especially liked @brittanymakes post, so sweet, with a sweet story to go with it. Your room looks great and great photography. I have to say you guys are really knocking this blogging thing out of the park. Keep it up.

  6. Such a fresh perspective on home decor – because you are so right, nowadays light and airy has become a standard, yet there’s a different, more intimate story to a home that hasn’t been explored. You’ve captured the mood of the study so beautifully. Interesting angles, considered yet not contrived styling, moody imagery – I would never guess that you have anxiety over photographing interiors! Love this series and look forward to seeing more, and for what it’s worth, I would love to be considered for future collaborations like these. XO

  7. Rachel says:

I’m so excited for this series and glad it will be an ongoing thing!! Your room is beautiful – I love the green!

  8. Karen F says:

I love this idea for a series, and it was so insightful of you to think of it!

  9. Libby says:

This is a brilliant idea! I love night photos the most but they’re so tricky. Your space looks so dreamy.

  10. Veronica says:

EXCELLENT idea, Julia! I have always wanted to see your home at night, especially your bedroom. (There is just no way to say that without sounding creepy haha!) I have been so curious about those bedside sconces since you said you don’t use the overhead light and now just have a fan.

  11. Abby says:

i LOVE this series! i love my house most at night when it feels cozy, so it’s very refreshing to see these cozy shots in a blog post!

  12. Anna says:

How about a round or drum coffee table roundup? I LURVE yours in the basement, but it’s outta my range at the moment.

  13. Thalia says:

Julia, I think the “A Night In” idea is so fantastic – and I love this post! I, too, love when the sun goes down and I can turn on the ambient lighting – everything feels so cozy and is one of my favourite parts of the day!

p.s. thank you for listing the Spotify playlist! I have been wondering what music it was in your Instagram stories too (I’ve already got it playing :) )

  14. Thanks so much for including me in this, it was such a fun and somewhat challenging concept. I just love this room of yours and it’s been fun to see it evolve!

  15. Kates says:

While I love light and airy rooms there is something about a bold painted wall at night that makes a room feel ultra cozy. I have been considering painting my downstairs basement (which gets natural light in the day time) a fun bold oceany/navy blue color.

  16. Amanda says:

Do you have any other favorite ice cream recipes?

My husband and I love to make it too!

  17. Jenn says:

What a great way to unwind. I like to turn the lights off in our family room and just leave the string lighting on around our fireplace.

  18. shannon says:

After the whole “I love lamps” thing on the podcast I am somehow not surprised that you are hosting this new series :D Speaking of the podcast, I hope that everyone in this series will be on it at some point!

  19. so happy to be a part of this! I just love that this is the room you highlighted (it’s one of my favorite rooms in your house haha!)

  20. So glowy and relaxing! Room for one more?
