How do you wind down at night? Chris’s favorite thing to do after a long day of work is to wash his feet in cold water and he’s instantly relaxed and refreshed. I love nothing more than to shut my computer, hide my phone, put my hair up and watch a short 20-30 minute show on Netflix or Hulu. We’re loving Chef’s Table, The Bachelorette (although my favorites went home this week), Last Man on Earth and rewatching The Office (it’s still so funny!). It seems the crazier our weeks are, the more important that half hour show is at the end of the day. What are you watching?
Other fun things this week!
One of my favorite bloggers to follow, Kate Ahrend, made a stair runner by attaching several vintage rugs together on her staircase and my jaw is still on the floor. It is one of the most inspiring DIYs I’ve seen this year.
Is it toilet paper storage or an art installation for your bathroom?! (Both. And there’s a smaller one, too.)
All you Serial fans, did you hear the news?! Ahh!!
I think this would be the cutest gift for your girlfriend that loves to cook.
Someone on Instagram this week asked what we have as an overhead fixture in our bedroom. I had to laugh and then fess up–we have an ugly, dated fan that’s on 24/7!, and always conveniently cropped out of every photo. Every winter I want to replace it with a modern chandelier and every summer I’m reminded of how much we love sleeping with the fan on. So now, we’re looking at fans. This is the top contender. (black on black. mmmm.)
Speaking of bedrooms, I was so inspired by this master bedroom makeover. There’s a peacefulness that accompanies the personality it has that can’t be faked. I pinned almost every picture.
The prettiest cachet hooks. I want a G and an F. (and a C and a J).
Hope you have a great holiday weekend! When I was growing up, the 4th of July always felt like the middle of summer, and now that I’m older, it feels like the beginning…or just going way too fast. We’re going to have at least three big bbqs, light fireworks on our quiet little street, and soak up the long weekend. Part 2 of our Updating your home on a budget Podcast will still go live on Monday. If you missed part 1, where we talk with Young House Love, you can check that out here.
See more about our DIY Shiplap built-ins in our family room here, and our finished deck here. The table is Ikea, the chairs found here are the umbrella (from here) is sadly sold out in this color but here’s a similar black and white one for $219, $144 (love the variation in stripes!) $49 and another for $49.
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

I recently renovated our spare bedroom for my baby before he was born and decided to go with a white ceiling fan. It kind of just blends in with the white ceiling and really helps the ceiling feel a little taller.

Love the fan, I live in AZ and you need a fan like in EVERY room. How would you deal with lighting in your bedroom? I feel like all the cool fans don’t have a light fixture, or at least the ones I like.
I hope no one else has mentioned this yet — I did look through the comments but didn’t see it — but the link to Kate’s website is asking me for a login and password in order to look at it. And I’m so curious to see how those rugs look as a stair runner!
I just tried and got the same thing! I look at her blog every day, so I’m not sure what is going on. Hopefully it gets sorted out on her end soon.
Ceiling fans are such a necessary evil! Especially since I’m in Florida. When we “remodeled” our home we installed the Hampton bay version of these beauties. Super inexpensive and light on the eyes.

Love the fan option. We searched and searched last year, and finally happened upon a cheap, decent option at Home Depot! It’s matte black with a dimmable LED kit and a remote, win win!

Oooooh I wish I had seen this beautiful option when we added ceiling fans to all of our bedrooms (no AC). Finding something good looking, with a light, and around $100 is near impossible. We ended up with a low-profile Hunter fan that is pretty and quiet, but not as modern as I’d like.
Oh, I sooo understand about the fan in the bedroom. I wanted to put one up and the hubs refused–for five years! And then I did it anyway and he loves having it in the summer. Yeah, I splurged big-time becasue I wanted a sexy fan but it is so worth it!
Friday!! Your deck is begging for 4th of July BBQ’s! I’m obsessed with that striped umbrella! And those Anthro pot holders would make anyone love to cook. Fun casual Friday post. I always look forward to it.
