Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Over the summer, we swapped out the lights on our garage and added a pretty hanging basket of flowers. While we are continually smitten with the new lights, the flowers ran their course (pretty quickly!) and we were left with a big womp womp. We tried a few other flowers but our garage gets sun almost all day and it’s so high, it was a pain to water every day. So, we decided to swap out the flowers for an address plaque we DIYed. Here’s how we did it…

SUPPLIES ||

•House Numbers ( We chose these in aged brass for their modern traditional vibe–love them!)
• 8.5″ x 23.5″ Pine board
• 1/4″ thick trim pieces
• White exterior paint
• Black exterior paint
• Brushes

address supplies

This is a really easy project that took a couple hours only due to drying time. First I painted the large board white and the trim pieces black. While it isn’t pictured, it’s a good idea to paint the front, back and sides with exterior paint for extra protection from the elements.

Once everything is dry, we attached the trim pieces with a nail gun, the numbers according to directions and secured the whole thing to the garage with two 3 inch screws right through the front.

We touched up the screws with white paint and you can’t even tell when you step back.

We have small gold house numbers against the siding right by our front door which have always been hard to see. We are in the process of replacing those (and our front door!!) too, but we love the addition of this plaque in plain view.

front of house fall 2015

The fall colors are showing off big time right now, making everything look extra pretty. But through all seasons, I think that house numbers over flowers were the right move for us. The pizza guy doesn’t have to second guess he’s at the right house and the numbers also give a nice preview of the color scheme and style you can expect to find inside. We’d love to eventually add windows to our garage doors (I’ve seen some really good faux options) but little by little we couldn’t be happier with how things are shaping up.

Where did you buy these house gold numbers and what size are they?

  2. Nicky says:

Beautiful house number plaque! I like this amazing golden touch! Really oustanding work ;0

    Keep it up!

  3. Danielle says:

Looks great! I’m always on the hunt for good looking house numbers and would’ve never thought to look at Lowe’s – thanks for the tip!

  4. Evelina says:

I don’t think I have seen those outdoor lights but I love them! They are so modern and so ChrisLovesJulia! The numbers look really great too and the black outlines adds so much to make the sign pop!

  5. Lilly says:

It’s such a pretty platform for the numbers. I just bought some new modern numbers for our house but I haven’t put them up because I don’t know what color I want to paint the wood I want to put it on I’m in between black or a dark stain. I love this combination of white and black but our house is white so I think it would disappear against all the white. Thanks for the inspiration.

We have the same problem, with people seeing our house number! It doesn’t help that we have big hedges blocking part of the front of our house. We haven’t lived here long, so for now just stuck bigger/brighter adhesive numbers to the side of the mailbox; but I definitely thing an upgraded house number plaque will be necessary some day!

  7. Oooh, what color are you going with for the door? We recently painted ours and I love the change!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
