Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

We’d really like to get to a point where we can sell our shed and downsize to a smaller one, or be rid of one all together. Ours takes up so much of our yard (it’s huge!), that we are starting to think the extra storage space is just not worth it. That has lead to some serious organization in the garage. We have a large garage, but we also want to continue to be able to park our 2 cars in there–I think we can do it! With our smaller tools and supplies in check, we needed a solution for our larger garden tools. Monkey Bars has a ton of storage solutions, and they are actually based in our town–go local! We hung up one of their large garden tool racks next to our new shelving in the garage so we can hang up our garden tools once and for all.

It took less than 10 minutes to hang. It’s no fuss, the hooks are adjustable and it keeps our tools off the ground. Plus, there’s lots more room to grow our collection. This rack alone can hold up to 20 tools!  Of course we love DIY as much as more than the average person, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to purchase something that does exactly what you need it to do. But, in the name of DIY, here are a few other DIY tool organizers that I’m seriously smitten with.

Like this one that up-cycled an old file cabinet:

Or this one that used a pallet:

Or these people that got creative with PVC pipe:

So many creative people out there! How do you store your tools?

We’re excited to have a home for our tools that is sturdy and versatile, now we just need to find a place for the lawn mower and table saw. That might prove to be a bit more challenging. Is there any way to really live shed-less?

Ps. 20% off print orders from the shop through Sept 2nd using promo code LABORDAY20 at checkout. Happy long weekend to you all!

What do you think?

  1. I have no much tools to store so i do not thought to do some tool storage as the articles. It is wonderful ideas! I just use a pallet to hang rakes, spades, hoes and leaf rakes, as your picture in the article. I just use the CRAFTSMAN HOME SERIES 6 to store some tools for my lawn mower. It works quite good.

  2. I think we should have a few power tools, I often having problems with the car and I think think it would be helpful if available in garage.

this is the smart solution to avoid losing belongings, save space

  4. his tutorial is amazing! So perfect for a beginner like me. I really appreciate the detail. I am painting a dresser and just finished my first coat of paint. I used an extender and almost everything feels smooth but looks streaky. Is this what you meant by the first coat of paint will look bad? I’m worried and wondering how much I should sand? Thanks for this tutorial!!

  5. Joseph says:

It looks simple, clean. I’m storing my tools with PVC pipe now .

  6. Daniel says:

Really love your idea, very creative. I should make one for my own to order my garden tools.

  7. Mean a office file cabinet can be turned into a hand tool storage cabinet. It is great idea.

  8. Ann says:

Thanks for posting the file cabinet idea. My husband’s basement worshop is a disaster area and one reason is all of the leftover wood from 25 years of projects. When I saw that idea a lightbulb went on for me! I used an empty file cabinet he had down there and filled it with wood scraps. Brilliant solution to the problem! I’m going to offer the drawers on Craigslist and I’m sure someone will recycle them for cash.

  9. We have Monkey Bars in our garage and I love them! Such a great storage solution!

  10. Lauren says:

No shed here. We just keep our garage very tidy. Lots of bins. And it came with some built in shelves, so those definitely help. I guess I don’t miss what I don’t have. :)

  11. Joyce H. says:

The filing cabinet one just makes me think “spiders….and debris….everywhere…”
that being said I like this simple, functional rack you have. I didn’t even know you guys had a shed!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
