Things We’ve Done besides Work on the Floors this Week

March 14, 2014

We believe we should all love where we live.

We’re a couple of homebodies, working to uncover the home our home wants to be. And we’re so happy to have you here.

Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

I know, I know. We’re a broken record over here lately talking about our flooring project. The project has consumed our lives in almost every way. The goal was always to have the project done before the end of March, and I am happy to say–right now, I think we’re on track to do that. If you follow us on Instagram (@chrislovesjulia), we’ve been posting even more in-progress updates there. Like how last night was spent taping and mudding seams. Good times. In an attempt to talk about something else. Anything else. Here are a few highlights from our week that don’t involve staring at floors.

1. I did work on this week’s painting, but I still don’t feel like it is finished. I get excited about a painting when it’s done. I usually don’t want to send it off and that’s how I know. But this one still needs some work. Hopefully I’ll have some time to finish it this weekend and post it early next week. I did reorganize the Etsy shop and consolidate listings, so things look different over there. But rest assured, there are still 4 different size prints of each painting available right here.

2. Installed a sweet new fixture in the nursery. We posted about that a couple days ago.

3. Purchased a carseat. Finally! We ordered this Chicco one from Amazon. It has such great reviews and says it is lightweight and easy to put in and out of the car. They had a “like new” one available as an Amazon Warehouse Deal for $20 less, so I went with that one. Have any of you ever purchased an Amazon warehouse deal? It hasn’t arrived yet, but I am hoping the “like new” description holds true.

4. Returned 20 unused pieces of HardieBacker board to Home Depot and got over $200 back. Woot! Okay, so this is flooring related, but Home Depot gives a great discount for buying this concrete board in bulk. We initially bought 115 sheets–which was more than we thought we needed (although, admittedly, we were a lot farther off than we thought) because if you order in bulk, you get a better deal. Even though we spent a chunk of change on that board, $200+ back feels like free money and not a refund.

5. Took Greta for her 4-year well visit. She’s off the charts for height and weight. In fact, she’s in the 95% percentile for five year olds. There were times when I was growing up that being tall was very hard. Kids can be mean, but Greta is so confident and friendly–I hope she’ll keep that with her always.

6. Shopped online for doorknobs and area rugs and curtains, but can’t commit to anything just yet. I love this doorknob so much. Maybe too much. Area rugs (especially a large 9×12 one like I need for the living room) are so intimidating. They are such an investment and I am stuck in indecision. Or maybe paralyzed by the price. Not sure which.

Tonight and all day tomorrow we’re back to the floors–except this time, we’ll be beginning to lay the tile. We’re so anxious and excited. Happy Weekend to you! What are you up to?

I order from Warehouse Deals all the time! Let’s see… I’m standing in our kitchen right now, typing on an iPad on a stand bought from Deals, looking at our over-the-dining-table lamp bought from Deals, adjacent to a bathroom with an American Standard ” comfort height” low-flow toilet bought from Deals…etc. I save hundreds a year, seriously–“like new” to Amazon apparently usually means “open box.”

Sometimes they’re a little off on the “like new,” but in that case, they’ll take the offending item back.

And, just in case anyone reading doesn’t know–Amazon Smile lets you buy the same products as you can on Amazon, even Deals!, using your Prime membership, if you have one…but the difference is that Smile allows you to donate a portion of your order’s value to a charity of your choice. For real. For those of us who live in semi-rural areas, at last, a way to feel good about buying so much from Amazon!

Ha! I have yet to catch your original paintings on Etsy before they’re gone, baby, gone. I have no idea the approximate price point they run (since that info is not available on previous sales) and I NEED to know whether they are remotely within financial reach! <3 At first, I thought they went up on Friday. Then, I figured out that they go up on Etsy on Thurs night. Soooo, I set an alarm so I wouldn't forget; and then last night, I proceeded to refresh your Etsy page every 15 – 30 minutes from 7pm until about 11:30! lol… Sigh. I need a nap… ;)

We have that car seat- and have used it for the last 7 months. I LOVE it. I loved it so much that I bought the Chicco NextFit (Target sale + Cartwheel deal) as her next seat. But the KeyFit is awesome sauce. I love that it snaps in and out for everyday, but we also flew with it at 3 months (without the base) and it’s very easy to install without the base as well (which we did in our rental car once we got there). It’s just a really great seat.

It may seem like “oh, another stroller” but the Chicco Caddy is worth every penny. We got it as a gift and it was pretty much the only thing we used until a few weeks ago- rolls beautifully, not bulky and very lightweight, huge basket, cupholders, easy to assemble and fold. Carseat just snaps in and out which is great when they are sleeping alllll the time. Just my 2 pennies. :)

I Just bought a big 8×10 rug yesterday. It was tough and I’m still feeling iffy about it. It makes such a huge statement in the room and now I feel kind of stuck, you know? Maybe I should take trish’s advice and get a regular rug bounded.

On another note, yay for Greta on being tall like her beautiful momma and tall dad!!! I’m tall, and I’ll be honest it was tough growing up and never feeling as ‘cute’ as my petite friends. But now I’m much more confident and *usually* stand up straight with my shoulders back. it takes time to get used to looking ‘down’ on the world and not shrinking to see it at their level. But being a tall woman IS beautiful!!!! Having a mom that is tall will probably help her. Unfortunately for me, my mom’s side is pretty average in height and I got my height from my dad, but my Grandmother is 6ft tall(STILL) and is beautiful!

Excited for the floors this weekend! Not excited for the aches and pains that come along with laying tile. :)

  6. Trish says:

Lots going on for you guys! I can’t wait to see the flooring – and I know you can’t either. :) A quick tip – remember that you can get regular carpet bound in any size. Don’t get yourself hung up on buying a pre-made 9 x 12. It’s a great way to get a large rug at fair price.
