Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Before I get into this week’s painting, I wanted to let you all know that after a lot of encouragement (thank you!), I have started selling fine art giclee prints of my weekly paintings, starting with last week’s Night Fishing. The prints will be available for purchase in my Etsy shop within a week after the painting debuts (now!) in 4 different frame-friendly sizes.

Just as I started painting this week, my easel broke. I couldn’t believe it. I hoped it wasn’t an omen of how the painting would come to life…or not. I tried to make-shift one by propping my canvas up on a couple bowls leaning on a chair and I found myself still having to hold the canvas with one hand while attempting to paint. It was comical, yes, but also so frustrating. And then I ran out of white paint and I threw my hands up in the air and called it quits for the day.

Periodically throughout the painting process, I frequently snap photos of my canvas to review. Sometimes I can see something good (or an area that isn’t working) more clearly in photos. Is that weird? Occasionally, when I am feeling close to finished,  I’ll send the photo to Chris for critique. Being used to my peers critiquing my work in college, he’s way too nice, but he can always sense if I’m not 100% happy with it. And if I’m not, he encourages me, “you’re not done if you aren’t happy with it.” I wasn’t done with this week’s for a long time–a lot longer than the other two I’ve done this year. But I’m so glad I kept going and pushing it.

Painting of the Week | 03 Larkspur

The outcome, to me, is so garden-esque (feel free to interpret it for yourself) and has me longing for Spring. It especially reminded me of tall, beautiful Larkspurs. A whole field of them, please.

Update: The original painting has sold, but to purchase high-quality giclee prints (4 different sizes available) click here.

To see the other weekly paintings, click here. As a reminder, I will be producing one painting a week and presenting that painting here on Fridays. It will also be available for purchase in my Etsy shop. We schedule our posts to go live first thing in the morning here, but the paintings will mostly be listed late Thursday nights, so to get a first look (or dibs!) at each painting, it wouldn’t be a horrible idea to add the shop to your favorites on Etsy.

What do you think?

  1. Verity says:

I just had to have a giclee of Larkspur, problem is you don’t ship to Australia. Never fear, got a US holding box which then on-ships. Ordered yesterday…yippee!!!

  2. Jenifer says:

Great modern, big picture of the living room. This looks great :). Where did you buy the farm into the picture?

  3. Alli says:

Yay! This makes me so happy. I can’t wait to order a print :)

  4. emily says:

hooray, hooray! I am so glad you will be doing this. off to your shop!

  5. Trilby says:

Oh my goodness – just when I think I love the last one the most, you outdo yourself! I’m trying so hard to be bolder in our new house with colors & patterns, and your paintings are speaking to me! I’m so happy that you’re doing prints! Will they stay active in the Etsy store for a while? Just asking, because my birthday is not until May – and I’d hope that the prints will still be around then! If you don’t think they will, I may have to ask my family for my present early!

  6. CarrieE says:

This piece is stunning! And yay for prints of your work!

  7. emmascott says:

so happy to see prints! can’t wait to go home and measure our stair landing wall to pick a size. Thinking of flaking the print with 2 abstract black&white photography! beautiful work Julia, love when vulnerability is rewarded!

  8. Sara says:

Will you make prints of “The Takeoff” available? I absolutely love that one.

    • Julia says:

I wish we could turn back time and do that for you. But we sent that one off before getting it photographed for prints. :/ There may be one similar in the future, though!

  9. Elly says:

Hi- how much do you sell the originals for? Every time I go to look they are sold out (good for you!)

    • Julia says:

Thank you Elly! This painting sold for $250. As the year goes on, and I find my footing, (and demand continues to grow) prices may reflect that with time.

  10. These pieces lately have been so amazing. SO GORGEOUS. I loved your old ones that you did, but these past three have really spoken to me. Can’t wait for the prints!!!!!!! TOTALLY getting one for our dining room.

  11. sandi says:

Aw, shucks, missed out!! Can’t wait until prints are available of this one. There’s just something about it I love.

  12. Red says:

I absolutely love this one! Can’t wait to buy a print. I was wondering how you have the prints made. Are you using a local printer or someone online? Just curious how that process works.

    • Julia says:

I researched and researched and talked to a bunch of other artists and decided to go with an online printer (feel free to email me for details!). Their giclee prints on velvet paper are absolutely gorgeous and extremely high quality.
