Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

We still need to seal and grout and seal once more, but all of the tile is in place so as promised (even if our kitchen is in a chaotic condition), here’s how it looks:
The area on the left is where the fridge goes.  We tiled back enough so the effect of a fully tiled wall was there. The piece of wood is temporary.  We screwed it in place as a guide for the tile–to keep it straight and also as a support.  There’s also a piece of wood temporarily behind the oven where we carried the tile straight across. Placing each and every marble tile took us a grand total of 26 hours.  Chris made all of the cuts and I laid the tile, and both of our fingertips ended up raw. But we couldn’t be happier with the results.
We’ll be sure to clean things up after we grout and have official before and afters of the kitchen for you next week.  We have a lot to do before our first two showings this weekend. EEee! I’m only a little panicking.
Have a happy weekend!
This post is in partnership with The Tile Shop. The tile we used is their 3″x6″ Hampton Carrara Polished.

What do you think?

  1. An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a friend
who had been conducting a little homework on this. And he
actually ordered me dinner due to the fact that I found it for him…
lol. So let me reword this…. Thank YOU for the meal!!
But yeah, thanx for spending time to discuss this matter here
    on your site.

Nice article and great knowledge about glass and stone mosaic . I love this story and enjoy with your words!

  3. Stunning!! So much work, but worth it! Hopefully grouting will go by much faster! :)

  4. Steph says:

Looks so great! It’s too bad you won’t be able to enjoy it to the degree that you were once planning but Hey! it’s practice!! :)

    Good luck with the showings!

I love the wraparound look, but I am curious as to why you didn’t go further back on the fridge section- what if a smaller fridge is eventually placed there? Also, will you be painting the side of the cabinet under the microwave?

  6. That tile is gorgeous! It’s going to look so amazing when you guys are all done!!

  7. This looks GORGEOUS Julia! Beautiful job!! I love how you carried the tile around the pantry doorway over to the fridge wall – ooh, the drama. I love it!

  8. Missy G. says:

Looking good! I’m sure it will look even better fully grouted and sealed. I won’t say “can’t wait” because I’m sure y’all need a bit of some rest after all that. :)

I am curious why you decided to go all the way up around the pantry door? Or why you tiled there at all, and didn’t just leave it as a backsplash behind the counters? I have zero experience designing kitchens, so I’m not trying to be snarky. I’m genuinely interested in your thought process on that. Thanks!

    • I really think it personal aesthetic preference. Because our kitchen counter in the last photo is on the same wall as the pantry, we wanted to carry it over the entire pantry instead of just having a hard stop there.

  9. GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So so stunning.

  10. That tile is STUNNING. You guys did an amazing job! Best wishes on your showings!

  11. The tile is beautiful. Sometimes I don’t love certain marble tiles – they look too yellow or brown or something but this is the perfect clean grey/white look I like about marble!

    Kitchen is looking incredible!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
