Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

I know it’s strictly DIY around here 95% of the time, but since it is Friday–we’re letting loose. I have been tagged no less than 12 times on Instagram to share 5 interesting things about myself, but Chris and I thought it would be fun to share these little silly/embarrassing facts with you readers right here instead.  We’re so much more than DIY anyway.  Are you ready for this?!

From Chris:

When I was a young boy in scouts, I once took a massive block of cheese on a winter campout as my snack, because I had heard that eating cheese helps keep your body warm. No crackers. Not even a knife to cut it with. I pictured myself lounging in a patch of green grass amongst the snow, sipping a lemonade and working on my tan. Instead I was just as cold as everyone else, except I had a pretty crappy treat that I ended up taking two bites of, then tossing it into the woods.

I look forward to Easter every year because that’s when Starburst Sour Jellybeans are available (I’m sure you can find them all year, just not as easily). I convince myself, every year, that they are my favorite candy of all time, so I buy like 8 bags. I eat them, and they really are good…but… I soon realize that they aren’t nearly as good as Sour Patch Kids, which are my actual favorite candy of all time.

There are two movies that make me teary eyed every time I watch them, no matter how many times I watch them – Cinderella Man, and Prince of Egypt.

I secretly (not-so secretly?) love it when people ask me for advice about cooking or food in general.

Notice the blog isn’t called “Chris Loves Renovating”? That’s because I hate renovating. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sense of accomplishment that comes with doing things ourselves. But I dread the process and I’ve been known to be a widdwe cwanky pants when working on projects. That said, Jules does enjoy it. And because “Chris Loves Julia”, the renovation happens.

From Julia:

I didn’t have much of a sweet tooth growing up (my has that changed!) and I used to hoard all of my candy from Easter, Halloween and Christmas in my top drawer and use it to bribe my sisters or mom to clean my room, or they could pay me money for some.

I wear a size 11 shoe.  It is the worst.  I used to squeeze into 10s because there aren’t many fashionable shoes that come in size huge.  And then last year, I decided to stop wearing any size but my own because my feet always hurt. I now embrace my size 11 feet I have had since 6th grade. There’s gotta be a life lesson in there, somewhere.

When I was twelve, I was kicked by a horse in the shin.  When we got to the emergency room the doctor was examining my chin for a good 3 minutes asking me if it hurt here or there.  Then I directed his attention away from my chin and pointed to my bloody, open shin.  I got 21 stitches and still have a very large scar on my left leg.

If it is after 9pm and I am tired, I can’t fight sleep.  I have tried–hard.  This has been especially embarrassing in the past when I have been on dates with a guy I was interested in and I fall asleep.  Right on the date! Blllerrrrrg.

Less than a week after having Greta, I got Bell’s Palsy and the entire right side of my face was paralyzed for months.  The muscles still haven’t fully recovered–but I don’t have to wear the pirate patch anymore. Woot!
So that’s us. And since Chris is too humble/shy to say, I’ll spill one more fun fact about him.  He’s the most hilarious person I’ve ever met! And he’d probably say I love a good robe. Now that you’ve “met” the non-DIY side of us, we’d love to hear something about you!  I guess we tag…everyone?

What do you think?

  1. Ha!! I actually have the opposite shoe-related problem: my feet are little for as tall as I am (5’9″). I wear a 7 or 7.5, which is strange and tiny looking once you notice.

And also, EVERYBODY wears a 7, so if I don’t get to the store the first day the new shoes are put out, I don’t get anything good.

  2. Hahaha! These are so great! The 9 o’clock thing makes me laugh because it reminds me of my husband. He went to bed at 8:44 tonight.

  3. Rachel says:

I’ve been a size 11 since I was 12 – yes, I was the awkward one with frizzy hair, braces, glasses, and clown feet! Anyways, j.crew has been my savior. They only sell 11’s online, but to have nice shoes, I am totally ok with that.

  4. Mandolyn says:

I LOVE Prince of Egypt!!! Even the soundtrack gives me shivers/makes me tear up.

I love hearing more about you two. You’re adorable as ever!!
I only like the red sour patch…. i will mail you the others

Julia!! I had no idea about the palsy, i am glad to hear that’s better. I hope that heals up eventually! I love you’d fall asleep so easily after nine.

I have a friend who wears size 12 wide. In my pride I wanted to find her shoes..i.found nothing!! Only a pair of slippers. Good luck dear!!

  7. Jenny says:

Hahaha! love this. Um yeah, my hubs just mentioned the other day that he couldn’t wait to stock up on Starburst jellybeans!! and he also loves Sour Patch kids.

I once got kicked in the stomach by a horse- no broken ribs thankfully! Horse-hoof shaped bruise though.

  8. Mich says:

I just wanted to chime in that Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores have amazing size 11 options!

  9. Aww very sweet. This post is so fun.

I feel weird/stalkery with my love of blog, I have even had dreams where I am real life friends with bloggers. Hopefully that didn’t sound too scary.

    • AviLynn says:

Lol me too, so that isn’t scary. I actually said “my friend” to someone when talking about something a DIY blogger did. It slipped. Its probably because I’m a SAHM & have like 3 real friends. My life is my kiddies, hubby, and the house.

  10. This is cute! It’s always nice to get to know bloggers a little bit more than just DIY stuff. I think it’s hilarious that Chris hates renovations but so sweet that he does it for love, Aww. Heart. Melts.

  11. Thanks for doing this post!! You guys are my fav blog and it’s nice to know more about you!! Chris’s little sentiment about not liking renovating but loving you so he does it anyway…. that was so sweet! Tell him if he likes to talk about food so much, he needs to do more food posts! I always enjoy a new recipe.

  12. You guys are so cute! Scott also loves Sour Patch Kids more than anything, which is an obsession that has crossed over to me, too.

Here is one thing about me that always surprises people – I love Aerosmith. Like, LOVE, LOVE. And then a newer friend will be like, “the band who sings ‘I dont want to miss a thing'” and then I have to explain the amazing history behind the band that goes back 40 years. Then I stop myself, because I realize no one else cares!

I have seen them in concert more than 10 times, and my fan-dom began when I was about 8 years old. It’s weird because I don’t obsessively love rock music (I actually like all music – country and hip hop being among my tops), but man, if I ever met Steven Tyler, I would faint.

  13. You DO love a good robe. Kind of funny/sad about that dr examining your chin. hahaha ummm no doc, my shin! sheesh. We love you guys! and I’m glad Chris likes it when ppl ask him about food/cooking questions, because I’ll keep asking!!!!

  14. Did you happen to read Two Twenty-One this week? Chelsea posted about her size 11 feet and her go-to shoes. http://www.twotwentyone.net/2013/02/for-all-the-big-footed-gals/

  15. I hear ya on the size 11’s. haha! I seem to have the most luck at Target or online–everything else looks creepy past size 10. It’s like they assume that if you wear a size 11 you also have Donald Duck feet?

    • Hahaha. So true. I have had good luck with Steve Maddens online. And yes, Target!

    • Anonymous says:

J.Crew has great size 11 shoes and you can find them in the sale section online quite often. Oh and they are made WELL! I’m the worst with my same size HUGE feet and feel totally entitled to buying shoes that I love when I find them in my size because it rarely happens! Happy shopping :)

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
