These are just four of the costumes that were on our short-list this year. Fine art?! Love that! Although I was set on being the Mona Lisa and I am still determined to pull that one off in the future. Downton Abbey was a clear choice, but Matthew and Mary’s (especially Mary’s) wardrobe is hard to come by on a dime or even piece together. Also, Chris wasn’t convinced people would know who we were. The same was true in the case of June Carter and Johnny Cash–we probably couldn’t have pulled it off as good as Reese and Joaquin, especially once I started singing. Because singing would kind of have to go hand in hand with that costume. Frankenstein and his bride were the first costumes we were set on this year, but somehow–the one we ended up on–trumped it all.
Your turn. Have you decided? What were you last year? I noticed I tend to choose costumes that would work easily with my hair color. Which means, I’ll probably never be a traditional Alice in Wonderland, but Hansel and Gretel are fair game.
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

We are going to be Cleopatra and Marc Antony this year…last year we were the wicked witch and a flying monkey!!
All of those ideas are fab! My favorite costume was the year I was Grace Kelly in Rear Window. I found something VERY similar to the black and white dress she wears at GoodWill. This year I’m thinking something funny for my hubby and I. LMFAO anyone?
I don’t know that we’re doing anything this year, which is soo sad. I had our costumes all picked out, but all the parties are the Saturday before (the 27th) and we’re going to a wedding that Friday night. Not that we couldn’t go to parties, but then that’s more time for the dog to be in the kennel (and more $$). Plus my husband is being a real downer about going to parties this year. :(
Nice!
For sure!
Matthew + Mary is such a great idea!! Love Downton. Max somehow got his mind set on being Buzz Lightyear so Ave is going to be Bo Peep and we’ll somehow throw together Woody + Jessie :) Can’t wait to see what you guys came up with!! Ps. I totally want to come to your party–and finally meet you!!–but we’ll be out of town :( Have such a fun night and maybe we should get together sometime and let the kiddos play!
Love that! I actually asked Chris if we could be Peter Pan and Wendy around August and he nixed it due to green tights. You guys are so perfect for the part anyhow!
Gah! I saw that. Trying to figure out how to change those scandalous ads. Tell pete to put on a wig or a silly hat and come. We just want to see you!
We just got our costumes for the party!! I’m so excited!! I should probably say what we are coming as just in case……. Be on the lookout for Lucy and Ricki Ricardo!!!
Julia, we will try to come. The hardest part is getting pete to dress up:( But how about you dress up as one of thoselovely ladies on your side bar ad? Just kidding! Hehe
All YEAR, I ask Jenn, “What should we be for Halloween?” and “What should we do for our Christmas card?” …we’re gonna be Peter Pan and Wendy.
Love the fine art idea! I’m trying to convince my boyfriend to be the Sun Drop guy so I can be the Sun Drop girl so we have an excuse for why we’re acting ridiculous that night haha
Sounds perfect!
Last year Ryan and I wanted to be Wayne and Garth but the whole cross dressing thing at a church function isn’t exactly ….allowed. So this year, Brinley wanted to be a princess and she wants Ryan to be Prince Charming. So my mom bought her costume and I’m DIYing Ryan’s with a sash and cuffs and colored tape down the pants. Me? Eh. Can’t exactly nurse in a costume. So miss Ellie and I will be halloweenie without a costume. I may get her something, but she has a few Halloween sleepers already. We shall see!!
Excited to see your costume!!!!! Last yrs was so good, so I’m curious what trumped it all!!
Those are awesome costume ideas! I’ve never done an all out costume like this before!
I’m taking advantage of my “pixie” haircut and am being a dark fairy of sorts. My sister and I found a fabulous goth-style prom dress for $25 last summer so that she could be Bellatrix for the Harry Potter 7.2 premier. With that and some large dollar store-bought black wings, lace fingerless gloves, a black feather hair piece, a skull necklace and black choker we had laying around, Halloween is good to go!
