You may remember back in this post, when our new jute rug arrived, that we decided our matching armchairs matched more than each other a little too well. Our living room became a sea of beige.
So, we decided to sell them (we actually won a gift card to purchase these chairs 2 years ago, so our investment in them was $0) to fund new chairs that would fit into our new living room design ideas. Instead of buying two matching chairs again, we fell for the idea of mixing and matching chairs for a collected his and her look.
We were unsure if the idea would translate well into our home that isn’t super eclectic, but I found these three very different examples that proved you don’t have to have a hipster style to pull off two different chairs–maybe I was thinking too much about it.
Check out this mid-century modern New York apartment:
This clean-lined traditional living room in Austin (my favorite!):
And this cottage-style traditional living room in San Francisco:
They all work. They are all beautiful. And they all made us more confident that our living room can definitely handle a couple different chairs, no problem. A couple weeks ago, I picked my chair the “her” of our chair combination and it arrived yesterday:
This one from Target (currently on sale for $119) doesn’t come with the matching pillow and its dimensions are smaller:
Next up is taking advantage of Labor day sales and find her–a him. I have already explained to Chris that although it is ultimately his decision, this is our living room not our family room so no reclining lay-z-boys or big bulky anythings are allowed…but it is still his decision. But I might weigh in on color. ;) Can’t wait to see what we can find!
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.
SHop all

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

I love your inspiration pictures! Especially the one with the two camel colored leather high backed chairs. BUT, i love your choice better!!! It’s so beautiful and i LOVE the print. it really pops with your neutrals!
Haha love the fun of his/her chairs!! I’ve definitely drooled over that very ikat chair at Joss and Main before. Gorgeous. I have to say that I like your chair’s chunky legs better than the cone legs!

Love the ikat, it goes very well! http://www.styleoyster.blogspot.com
*Separate family room, I mean. Okay I’ll stop filling up your whole comment thread! Haha.
PS Can you weigh in on how comfortable it is?? When we bought our couch/loveseat a couple years ago for our first house, we chose a set that was somewhat less aesthetically pleasing, but sooo commmfy. I guess it’s because we don’t have a separate family room as well, but even though our set is not my favorite style, we’ve reeeeally enjoyed how comfy they are. :D
I’m not worried about where to start looking as much as I am about if we are going to find something that looks good and feels good for Chris. But we will! We will!
That chair is heaven!!! It looks SO beautiful in that room already. That blue is so eye catching and I can’t wait to see where you also put that gorgeous blue accent color.
Lazy Boy chairs are uuuuug. Not a fan. not a fan. but I am excited to see what you come up with for his chair because I have NO idea where to even start to look for coordinating chairs!!
Ooo, sounds beautiful. I am loving navy, too these days!
This chair is perfection. The Ikat pattern with navy is fabulous. Navy is quickly becoming one of my new favorite colors. I just bought a navy and white chevron rug at Home Goods, and every time I look at it I smile. Great find! It IS the perfect HER chair.
That makes sense about having a more formal space! It would be nice to have a ‘loungey’ area that is not the first thing guests see when they walk in. Thanks :)
I would rather have only one living space. Ideally. It may sound weird but furnishing two separate spaces feels weird and wasteful to me. That being said, it is nice to have a space that we can have things a little more formal and not worry about being able to fall asleep on them. Every piece of furniture in our family room (our big Lounge sofa and chaise) passed the deep, comfy and sleep-worthy test. This chair is BRAND new, so it needs broken in, but no matter how much I break it in, I still wouldn’t be able to lounge in it. Ever. And that’s okay. It is soft on my tush and the little lumbar pillow is really nice on my back, too!
Hmm. There are so many great online sales, but Chris is adamant about sitting on HIS chair before buying it. So, we’ll probably hit up Macys, RCWilley, Pier 1 even Ikea. I’ll try to update our Facebook fan page if we find an especially great sale.
P.s. I LOVE your curtains. Love them.
Beautiful! I love the chair + the print. I just hung curtains in our living room that are that exact print and I am in love. I have been on the hunt for two “him + her” chairs and I’ve been waiting for Labor day as well…where are the best places to check out the sales?? The room is looking SO good!!!
get photographed in that chair. stat. in a red dress? :D
Do the legs unscrew to come off? Could you replace them with sleeker cone legs from ikea or something?
Love the slipper chair! They are gorgeous! I’d like some for our living room myself.
