Today’s poll will be the icing on the studio’s cake.  In this crazy turn of events, we have allowed you readers to design my new art studio. You have voted on color scheme, ceiling color, area rug and lighting and now we turn our attention to curtains.  The old nursery-turned-studio has a large window on one wall that definitely needs some dressing:

I wasn’t overly-excited about any of the curtain options I was finding.  I wanted something fresh and inspiring and then I came upon the tapestries at Urban Outfitters and I thought, “Those would make some pretty amazing curtains.”  I know they won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but the room is in dire need of a punch of pattern play and these huge tapestries will provide just that.  So, which is it going to be?:

1, 2, 3
You’ll notice I have put the winning ceiling color, area rug and light fixture next to the choices for reference.  I think any of these tapestries-turned-curtains will go great in the studio and I can’t wait to hear what you all think.  Vote now and feel free to play designer and weigh in below on why you chose what you did.
P.S.  Don’t forget to cast your daily vote for our Exterior Melodrama.  It only takes 2 seconds to hit a “Love it” button.  We want this one, bad.

What do you think?

  1. Yes of course crazy good! Crazy good like how your ceiling is teal. I’m dying to see this room come along. Edge of my seat, here!!

  2. Meagan says:

While I love both #1 and #2 I have to go with #2. There is just something about it…maybe the darker colors for contrast. I don’t know, but its calling my name and I am voting for it!
P.s. I am a little sad that the sphere light didn’t win.

  3. One more question… will there be one of these pulled off to the side, or two of them like regular curtains?

  4. michelle says:

i was initially all over #1…then i kept looking at them and decided #2 gave more options for other “stuff” and a little less crazy. you do have to work in there, after all.

  5. erica says:

This is such a fun idea. Will there be anything else to choose!? :)

  6. I think this poll is the hardest one of them all! Totally torn between option 1 and 2!

  7. Lizmthibault says:

I’m all for the Birch Trees, brings nature in, and is subdued enough that your creativity will shine.

  8. It’s lovely! Where are all these people voting for 2?

  9. Woohoo! I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

  10. TJ says:

oh goodness, i absolutely love all of these! it’s all about going big or going home!! :)
    xo TJ

  11. Jessie McKinley says:

I’m with Meagan! I loooove #1! What a great idea to use a tapestry! I never would have thought. It’s looking good!! ps. We are in the process of painting our bedroom Zinc!! I’m lovin it.

  12. I love how crazy both #1 and #2 are, but I think the brown tones #2 down a little more. That’s what I’m going with.

  13. Even if I do use it, you can use it in your house! Hahaha. ;) It’s surprisingly REALLY affordable.

  14. meaganbriggs3 says:

Loooooove #1. If you don’t use it, I may use it in my house!!!!

  15. I’m thinking one on each side for this room, although I can totally see how one pulled to the side could look amazing in other spaces as well!

  16. Hmm. Not sure. The readers have voted on every element so far, but the room is about complete. But if I do come across anything else in the studio that takes some deciding–I’ll definitely leave it up to a vote!

  17. Erin says:

Love #1 and #2 but I think #2 give you a little more color flexibility as you accessorize and as the room evolves. #1 seems to lock you into lots of red. But it sure is pretty.

  18. ok, thanks! :) I’m just so glad to have found this! I haven’t found the right curtains anywhere and would never have thought of using a tapestry.

  19. We got two of them, but they are very wide which works for this room because we wanted the curtains to flank the entire wall. You could definitely get by with just one though.

  20. I LOVE your curtains! Good choice with #2 :) Just wondering if you used one tapestry for the curtains and halfed it and sewed them or was it one tapestry as a curtain panel (2 total?) thanks :)

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
