Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Meet the narrow wall between the dining room/kitchen and living room:
Chris and I have discussed a few different times what we would like to do here.  We messed around with the idea of a chalkboard wall, or simply hanging art, or maybe creating some shelving, nothing felt 100% right.  Shelving would be too bulky and the walkway isn’t huge.  We already have plans to hang lots of art in the area and another piece here might be overload.  Chalkboards are all the rave right now, aren’t they?   But I am not sold on them, and Chris is even LESS sold on them.  I can see one day having some sort of chalkboard wall in Greta’s room–maybe–but we’re not even thinking about that yet.
This wall would be the perfect place for reminders and ideas, right next to the kitchen and not far from the front door (wouldn’t want to forget on my way out) and I do love the idea of having a place to jot down notes; to-do lists, groceries needed, appointments and events that we always forget even though they are on the calendar.  So, I get why some people go for a chalkboard.  But then when you erase, it looks dirty.  And when there’s nothing on it, it is boring.  Maybe I’m the only one that isn’t on the chalkboard wagon.  Oh well.  We came up with something that meets our needs/wants a little better.
Welcome to our solution:

I rummaged through some boxes until I found that mosaic mirror I DIYed for our old bathroom.  The color scheme worked well and it’s pretty and functional as a mirror, and for keeping notes with a dry erase marker!

It wipes clean with a paper towel, it isn’t dusty and if there’s aren’t notes on it (which may be hard to believe), it will still look like it is SUPPOSED to be there.

…off to cross “fill narrow wall” off my list. :)

Psst..If you haven’t voted for our living room yet, could you?  Just click on the picture at the top right and give us a thumbs up!  Thanks!

  10. Super creative, as usual. It’d be funny to draw a mustache on it right at Chris’ level.
Are you getting it? Huh? Huh?

  11. how funny, i was going to suggest the same thing when i started reading. i did the same thing but printed my empty menu (labelled cute mon, tues,,etc) and put under the glass, then write on/wipe off on top of the glass like you. i love it but haven’t found the prefect frame yet. i need something ornate and old looking that i can slap a bright mod color on. now it’s just in a silver frame on a small wall in the kitchen with a couple other framed things.

i haven’t been into the chalk thing till i found this post on making colored chalk board paint.http://decorate.tipjunkie.com/how-to-make-chalkboard-paint-in-any-color-paint/ might do something in my kids’ room. maybe in the life-size sillouhette (i know i spelled that wrong- i’m just wondering how wrong) shape of my kids. i dunno. … thanks for your comment. p.s. your house is looking great!

I’ve always loved that mirror so I’m happy you found use for it!!!

Now…what to do with my weird mirror I took from my mom’s house….It may just sit and wait until we are in a bigger space.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
