Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Err, on a shelf.

It’s one of those things that I have talked about for several posts.  Oversized letters.  A long shelf above our bed.  A canvas or two propped on top.  I assure you, as many times as you heard about it, Chris has heard about it MORE and I thought about it even more than that.  So yesterday when I tracked down the exact shelf I wanted at Ikea for half the price in a classifieds ad, it’s no surprise I went immediately to pick it up.  After putting Greta to bed and eating dinner, Chris and I were both tired.  We would have been pretty okay just snuggling and watching American Idol (not really one of our “shows” but we were tired, remember?).  The thought of putting together something from Ikea is pretty daunting at times.  It usually requires a lot of assembling and time (we are experienced Ikea assemblers).  But, there was still some excitement in me about finally seeing my above-the-bed vision come to fruition and luckily it took like fifteen minutes from start to finish.  Woot.  Without further ado:

We’re still jumping up and down with excitement.  Yes, we.  Like I said, the shelf is Ikea’s LACK shelf. The extra long 74″ one.  It’s a beut.  It comes in lots of different colors and this is one of their items you can actually buy it online if you don’t have an Ikea store close by.  Or, maybe if you are lucky like me, you can find someone selling it for $15 in the online classifieds.  (I swear angels were singing.)  The canvases I had, I just slapped some color on it for interest but I definitely didn’t want to take away from those faux metal letters we love so much.  (Thanks for the inspiration, Anthro.)
…it sure beats the before and adds tons of height to the room, right?
What am I dreaming up next?  More pillows for the bed (some muted solids would be nice) and a knit throw to toss across the bottom. You might hear about it a lot more.  ;)

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
