Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

We have this black bookcase in our living room/dining room area that has moved multiple times since we got this apartment last year.  From the living room, to the office, to the living room, back to the office…except by this time it was the nursery.  Then back to the living room, and today I moved it back to the nursery–for good!  (85% sure it’s for good).  And here’s why:

And this was taken before she took all of the dvds out (!!!)–at least six times a day, I have to put everything from the bottom two shelves back on the shelves, only to be taken off again.  I know what you’re thinking, “Whhhhyyyyy don’t you just wait until the end of the day?”  I could, but that means our front room, that we have spent a lot of time and moolah getting it to look like “us”, never really looks the way we imagined it looking.  Pretty much anytime someone pops in, I have to apologize because it’s a mess in there and it gets me sad that they couldn’t have come the hour before when it wasn’t a wreck of dvds and games and toys.  Sooooooo, by moving it in the nursery–I can save my energy and put all of Greta’s toys and games away once a day and leave our living room looking put together.  *Fingers crossed*

……and then I remembered why I kept moving the bookcase BACK to the living room.  That big blank wall is super bare, and intimidating!  But I wasn’t moving that bookcase back.  No way.  Not me.  Not today….I mean, errrr never again!  So I had to come up with something.  I hung a few different sized canvases that I had laying around waiting to be painted, but they were way too small for the space–besides, I have been saving them for our bedroom (get excited!).

So, I opened up my art box (which contains basically all of the art I have done in my entire life), and came across some prints I did in college.  After laying them out on our table and arranging them a bit, I knew that that big bare wall would be the perfect home for these guys.

As you can see, I used two different prints (detail shown below) but I definitely didn’t want to just alternate them.  C’mon, that’s boring, people!

I didn’t have 15 frames lying around (who does?), but I was really okay with that.  One thing I love about these prints is the torn edges–you never cut paper in printmaking–that a frame would hide.  I decided to showcase them using one simple, small finishing nail to hang each one.

So the finished product looks like this:

I am so pleased for so many reasons.  No more messy living room.  Having that bookcase gone really opened up the space.  I got to hang something that I created…and I love that.  The prints totally go with the rest of our decor and vibe in that room.   I dare you to hang something you made in your home–it’s so rewarding!
(Psst…I accidently had the wrong e-mail posted at the end of yesterday’s post.  I have since corrected it, but if you would like me to create a mood board for a room in your home, like I did for Meagan, just shoot an email my way:   jmarcum1127 {at} gmail {dot} com.  I’d be happy to help!)

  3. Your front room is the weeeeeirdest shape….I applaude you for doing so well with the awkward space!!! It looks SO good!

What a fun idea to do on the wall! I love the different colors and how you arranged it.

Yes, our bookshelf is in our front room too, and it is actually rare that Brinley takes EVERYTHING off those shelves multiple times a day. AND she raaaarely takes out all the DVDs. SO, all I’m saying is, it is probably the age because when we first moved to Talley, ALL SHE DID WAS take out those stupid DVD’s and books, for the love.

How can I get Ryan to understand that a rug on carpet is…okay…? He. Doesn’t. Get. It.
