A Modern Ceiling Fan in our Bedroom

While a lot in our bedroom has changed in the last three years, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, but I’ve been conveniently cropping out of photos–our ceiling fan. Yes, we’ve been secretly rocking this beauty: I am not usually one to wait so long to swap out something that doesn’t align with our design vision, but I was so unsure if we wanted to get a pretty light fixture or a different ceiling fan. I mentioned in a previous post that every winter I lean toward a fixture and then all summer, we love to sleep with the fan on. This summer sealed the deal for us–another ceiling fan it was. We ordered this modern, matte black one made by Fanimation from Wayfair. As much as I hesitated replacing our fan with another fan, most importantly we want our home to be functional and pleasant for us–and that meant sleeping with a…

An Unsponsored Review of: Tuft & Needle (& Freaking Amazing)

You want to know the oldest furnishing we own? Well, not the oldest because we have some vintage rugs, our nightstands are vintage, and we cherish some passed down pieces, like our piano, from our ancestors! But! The thing we that we’ve owned together the longest is our mattress. We got it for our wedding from my parents when we got married 7+ years ago. It has a pillow top and feels like sleeping on a cloud. Which was, well, heavenly for me but ever since Chris started having back trouble and his subsequent back surgery last year, it has been hard for him to get comfortable and wake up pain-free. And then there’s the embarrassing fact that over the past 7 years, it has developed bucket seats. Clear indentions where Chris and I sleep at night. As much as we love each other, Chris has expressed that even the touch of my…

Really Great Pillowcases & Shams (Hint: You can Skip the Duvet!)

We also get so many questions about our bedding. We recently added a large turkish pillow (from here) in the center and it brought everything together. But the real tip I can give about creating a similar look would be to look for interesting pillowcases or shams. While I love a simple white duvet and white sheets for easy cleaning, adding our navy shams (I found online at Urban Outfitters) added so much interest to our bed. I put them in front of 2 king sized pillows (we use for sleeping) and I love the contrast and interest it added. 99% of the time the pillowcases or shams will have a matching duvet cover or sheet set you can purchase separately, but if it’s just a small pop of pattern you’re after, skip the duvet and opt for the shams instead. Not only will you save so much money,  you’ll…

My Fool Proof Method of Hanging A Gallery Wall

Last week when I was hanging all the new art in our bedroom, my sister Patty was over chatting and serving as a make-shift photographer for this post. While watching me do my thing, she kept saying, “You have to come do this at my house! I want a gallery wall at my house next.” And I couldn’t help but say to her the same thing I say to all of you–you can totally do this.  So here is my fool-proof method for anyone that’s not very confident about hanging up pictures or terrified of putting a hole in your wall. Which, by the way, I fully support putting lots of holes in your walls. Hanging photos or art, even if you don’t like it the first time, will bring you so much joy. But this way, you aren’t going to make any unwanted holes. ;) 1. My secret is…

A Gallery Wall in the Master Bedroom + Tips on Creating Your Own!

The master bedroom has been our side project the last few months. I work on in my spare time, continually improving it when I can carve out a few minutes here and there or when I need a break from the reno dust. We love having a smaller, decorating only, project in our back pockets. In the past couple weeks, I found a beautiful king-sized ivory blanket with dark navy ticking stripes on clearance at Macy’s and I snatched it up faster than I could say Calvin Klein. It adds an extra layer of subtle pattern to the room, ties in to the ivory curtains (team ivory, it is!) and we’ve actually been using it instead of our duvet the last few weeks since it is lighter weight. Above our bed got a few new additions, as well. :) A couple months ago, Artfully Walls contacted me to see if…

It’s Curtains.

The other day I was trying to decide what curtains to hang in our master bedroom–very serious stuff–and I couldn’t make a decision by looking at them laying on my bed. And there was no one home (tall enough) to hold them up for me to squint endlessly while I decide, so I did the only logical thing and hung them each up and took a slew of photos so I could maybe make a decision once and for all. The decision is between two sets of curtains we already have and they couldn’t be more opposite. The first one is a charcoal set from Martha & Ash. We originally got them for our great room area, but when we added a window to the living room, we went with simple white linen drapes to keep things light. In here, they are moody and sophisticated and just a few shades…

A Big, Cozy Bedroom Update

Over the last week, we have been working on our bedroom and I am so excited to share some progress photos with you. Even in our last house, we never really really got to our bedroom, so we are investing a little bit of money into this just-for-us space and it has already made such a difference. A bedroom is such a personal space and it is finally starting to feel like it reflects our personality. It feels comfortable, which is of course how a bedroom should feel, but our bedroom has always just kind of felt like where we slept. Here’s how it looked when we moved in: Over the last year and a half, we tore up the old carpet and laid the same ceramic wood floors, but all the furniture remained the same. We did paint the walls a moody dark grayish blue-green. Now, only the basics…

Top Rug Picks for the Bedroom

I feel like I am bobbing my head trying to stay afloat over here. I’ve taken on a lot of side projects and assignments (and in the meantime, feel like I really found my calling in life!). It’s an exciting and a little bit stressful time in my life, but I always feel at home when I am at my computer blogging. Late at night, for the past several weeks, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect rug for our bedroom and constantly sending Chris links to which he replies “eh” for no or “I dig it” for keep it on the short list. Here’s the short list of six that we’re loving: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 If you remember, here’s the bed we decided on (I’ll show you it in our room later this week). I actually ordered one of these…

We Bought A Bed!

Our bedroom has taken a backseat as of late while we traveled and worked on the laundry room–more updates there later this week! The damper came when we waited too long to purchase the bed we had our eyes on. It was my own fault really. You may remember in the mood board for the master (check out the original post here for links to all the products pictured), we picked out a pretty four-poster bed. I had some insider information that Crate & Barrel was discontinuing their Osborn 4 poster bed in the fall and I thought it would surely go on clearance and we could score a deal on it. Well, it is on clearance, but all the king sized beds are sold out! I was a little disappointed, but we had been waffling about purchasing the bed due to the height of the top rail–it is just…

How to Patch Drywall like a girl, Our Freshly Painted Room + $100 to Ace!

Our bedroom is finally painted, and I can’t believe I waited so long to do it. (I say that every time.) But before we get into that, let’s first address the gorilla-sized hole in the room, seen in the picture below: See on the wall under the window? Last year, as we were doing the floors, we discovered that some water had been seeping in through our windows during the winter, and that water was turning to mold. Chris pulled this section out to see how bad it was, and thank goodness it didn’t require taking down the whole wall. We re-sealed all the windows and had some people look the drywall. Fortunately, we were able to treat it without further deconstruction to our home. BUT, this hole has been there, staring at us, for a year now. This month, Ace Hardware challenged us to take on a home maintenance…
