100 year old home gets a 3 Day Kitchen Makeover for less than $5K!

Back in February, we went through more than 2600 applications that poured in over 48 hours for a makeover, sponsored by Lowe’s. It was our second time traveling anywhere in the country making over one of your spaces in a weekend, although this year was a little different. Last time we ended up on Long Island, transforming an entry/sitting area, but the stakes were a little higher this year as all of the entries were bathrooms and kitchens. The decision was not easy or quick, and included a lot of discussion around, “Could we really do this in 3 days?!” but we found ourselves enamored with a small, early 1900s kitchen in a Baltimore row house and knew that it was the perfect candidate for our weekend refresh. Over the weeks that followed, we spent hours upon hours designing the space, collecting measurements, picking out and ordering everything from Lowe’s and Skyping with the homeowners to try…

A Kid-Friendly Christmas “Mantle” in the Playroom

This post is in partnership with Lowe’s. Since this is the first holiday season that we’ll have the playroom/family room completed, we wanted to deck it out a little bit since we spend so much time down here. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit Lowe’s headquarters and peek at their Holiday collections that are available at Lowe’s stores this year–right now!, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on some things. Almost everything you see here is from Lowe’s and if you mouse over the photo, I linked to all the products directly to the Lowe’s site. This little corner was also featured in TABLE magazine’s winter issue (on stands now!) where I was able to share a few tips for decorating a mantle, even if it isn’t a mantle. If you don’t have a fireplace, a piano, credenza, sideboard or even a shelf can be…

Lowe’s Spring Makeover Afters: A Modern Lake House Entry/Sitting Room

When we first saw the Freeman’s application for the Lowe’s Spring Makeover, we were immediately drawn to it. Although dark and dated, it felt warm and charming and there was definitely evidence that they had already poured their own sweat into the adjacent dining and tv room even though they had just moved in a couple months prior. So we knew they were go-getters. They hinted that this house had significant meaning to them, but it wasn’t until we were in their home, knee-deep in the makeover, that we were really able to get to know them and their story and realize how truly inspired this modern lake house makeover was. I’ll get more into that in a minute, but here’s the space when we started. We arrived in Long Island late on Friday night, April 8th. We were originally hoping to stop in and at least take in the…

#CLJtotheRescue Starts Tomorrow: Here’s the Plan!

Believe or not, the time has come for the #CLJtotheRescue makeover! We leave tomorrow for Long Island where we’ll see the Freeman’s space for the first time in person. We only have a brief time period, so we’ll work our tails off all day on Saturday implementing the makeover with a few Lowe’s volunteers, and then take photos Sunday morning and fly out. We’re excited, pumped, anxious, stressed and nervous. It may seem like this creeped up quickly (it has!), but we’ve also been working on designing this space behind the scenes since we chose the dated entry/sitting room to makeover back in February, so in many ways we feel so ready to just get in there and make this space sing: I thought it would be fun to take you behind the scenes with how the planning process went over the past couple months. There were some things that…

Tips For Choosing Wall-to-Wall Carpet in a Modern, Family Setting

Our Stainmaster carpet was installed earlier this week and it’s even better than we imagined it would be! We talked about it in this post, but wall to wall carpet has kind of gotten a bad rep in the last decade. And while I understand the appeal of hardwood floors, there is an undeniable coziness with carpet that, ooo!, just absolutely made the downstairs. JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content. Our previous carpet (photo below, taken during our walk through) was your run of the mill, oatmeal colored, cheap, medium-to-high pile carpet. I’m sure you know it well, too. Often times people think that a higher pile carpet automatically means it is cushier and then skimp on the carpet pad, too. At least that is what happened here and in our last house and in our apartment before that. And then you end…

We’ve Picked a Space! The Lowe’s Spring Makeover Is Taking Us To…

Last week, we announced that we have the privilege of partnering with Lowe’s this Spring to makeover a space in somebody’s home–interior or exterior–and it could be anywhere in the country! There was a small application window of just 48 hours and over 600 #CLJtotheRescue submissions poured in from all 50 states and DC, too! Wow! We initially thought we would be able to decide over a couple days, but we were so overwhelmed with the amount of applications and all of your stories, we wanted to read every single one! We laughed hysterically and cried with you, too. Thank you for being so willing to open up your homes to us–that’s a huge deal and we realize that. We have the very best readers and such a wide variety of people and cultures and homes that read Chris Loves Julia. I just wanted to pause and say, we see you and…

How To Make An Outdated Fireplace Insert Look Like A Million Bucks

We haven’t had a playroom update in some time, but we’ve made some real progress down there recently. We tore up all the carpet, painted the walls two different colors (I’ll share that soon, but there’s a peek on Instagram!), bought all the material for our built-ins and over the holiday, we revamped the fireplace. I didn’t take a proper before photo with the old mantle on it, but you can kind of see it in this photo. The black trim around the gold part of the fireplace was just wood trim painted black to match the mantle. It was really uninspiring for a long time. I’m not a fan of corner fireplaces really, but this one was inverted and outdated on top of being in a corner. Three strikes? Almost. We thought about nixing it from the room altogether, or replacing the insert but both of those were more…

Bringing Wall-To-Wall Carpet Back

We have been ironing out details of our downstairs renovation over the past two weeks. Lowe’s jumped on board to sponsor a lot of the big construction components we have planned and one of their corporate partners, Stainmaster carpet, was eager to work with us, too after hearing about our plans to carpet the whole thing. We are going to rock the wall to wall carpet so good. Before I go any further, we are beyond grateful to these companies that really let us stretch ourselves and still have 100% control over our decisions. The carpet in our downstairs (and on the stairs) has been in bad shape since we moved in. We had it professionally cleaned twice and it just looks tired and stained. I don’t even like thinking about how long it has been in the house (ew). Initially, we thought about doing the same tile downstairs as…

Patio Zen

This year has been a growing year for me. I have taken on a lot of extra freelancing and started to work for a big interior-inspiration website nearly full time. About half way through, I was so overjoyed with all of the opportunities but also feeling a little overwhelmed, too. My sister, Victoria, who still lives in my hometown, Pittsburgh, shares a lot of the same passions as I do and I asked her if she would be willing to work for me a few hours a week. She jumped in with both feet and I can’t imagine any of this without her anymore. I love sending her little surprises in the mail occasionally (I pay her, too, obviously!) because I appreciate her so much. Lowe’s recently came out with a new product I got to preview a few months ago, called Giftables–prepackaged, curated boxes that offer the convenience of…

Our New Whirlpool Duets in Diamond Steel [and all the Heart Eyes Emojis]

If you follow @chrislovesjulia on Instagram–which you really should; I frequently post little project updates there when I am struggling to find time to post beefy updates here–you saw that our new washer and dryer arrived for the laundry room this weekend! First, a little backstory. While we were adding a window to the living room earlier this year, which we special ordered through Lowe’s, they (Lowe’s) got wind of our project and loved how it turned out. I received an email from their Senior PR specialist saying they have been watching our work for some time and would love to work with us on an upcoming project. At this point, we were starting to make plans for the laundry room and they were very excited about it and wanted to be involved in any way they could. Lowe’s. Lowe’s! #pinchme. They guided us when it came to the recessed…
