Happy Halloween! + A Party Recap

Our annual costume party was on Saturday night, but we’re still recovering over here. I had planned to share details of the stair railing today, but since it’s Halloween, we’ll save that for tomorrow and share some details from this year’s party with all of you! It was our biggest party yet. There were over 200 people here, and by that I mean everywhere in and out of the house. Luckily, we had the best weather (sandwiched between two very rainy days) and our guests were able to spill out onto the back deck where we had our usual seating around the main fireplace, plus 6 hay bales to the left with blankets on top around an additional fire pit and the dining area, too. There were also people everywhere on the first floor except our bedroom, where we pushed Faye’s crib for babies that needed a quiet place to…

Favorite Halloween Ideas from the Archives

There’s just a week and a half until Halloween and we’re working double time to make sure everything is ready for our annual costume party. I realized I usually don’t get around to posting about what we did for decorations or food until after the fact, so I thought it would be fun to compile a few of my favorites from years past right here–while there is still time to execute a few of them in your own home if you wish! Last year, we made 100 Harry Potter-esque floating candles for the living room. It was so moody and magical and I can’t wait to break them out again this year. Read the easy tutorial right here–best done with a couple of girlfriends. A variety of dips and things to dip are always a crowd pleaser and you can usually eliminate utensils, too! One year, we served the dips in small pumpkins!…

Our Costume Party Invites this Year + Projects on Board!

We love Halloween around here and every year, for the past 6 years!, we have thrown a costume party. Everyone really goes all out with their costumes, we set up a photo booth, have lots of food and every year we dress up for the invites to really put the costume in costume party. This year, we channeled the Beatles. We used the free font “Bootle”, which looks exactly like The Beatles logo font to add our last name to the invitations and kept the information in a simple font which felt kind of vintage, too. (The font is Hanley and it’s worth the money–we use it all the time). I ordered a few wigs on Amazon for me, Greta and Chris, and Faye’s feathery hair (yes, those are our two beautiful daughters!) worked like a charm with those round Lennon-like glasses that were a $2 add on item on Amazon. We sat on the entry bench…

DIY Harry Potter-esque Hanging Candles + Party Decor Details

We had our 5th annual costume party this weekend and, somehow, each year it manages to be even more fun. Most of our friends and family go all out with their costumes and some we even barely recognize when they show up. It’s a complete riot and we are so grateful all of our different circles get along so well and everyone seemed to have a great time. For the party, we transformed Faye’s nursery into a make-shift “photo booth” with a backdrop and some photo lights and my camera all set up and ready to capture everyone’s costumes–it’s a crowd pleaser, and we just love giving our guests the memory of their wonderful costumes. We’ve done it for five years and there’s no end in sight. Although next year, I’ll probably hire someone to man the camera because it was a little chaotic for me to keep running back…

We’ll bob for apples in the toilet…and you’ll LIKE IT!!

At the beginning of October, we have a family tradition of finding some sort of costume around the house and taking a photo for our annual costume party invitations. Yesterday we did just that! It’s our 5th consecutaive year doing this and it’s so fun seeing Greta, errr Squints!, get more and more into it. This year’s costume was born completely around that (non-stretch! no stretch at all!) vintage bathing suit my mom had stashed in the dress up. Charly is wearing my shirt, and Smalls is killing me–Faye Faye, you nailed it. Tweaking a popular tagline from Sandlot, and we had our invites: We’ll bob for apples in the toilet…and you’ll LIKE IT! Along with our invitations, we lay out (for us and you) what projects we want to get done before welcoming 150 guests into our home for the big party. We have been known to get dozens of projects done…

Our Halloween Party, Costumes and Spread

Our party Saturday evening was so fun. We had over 100 people show up but fate was on our side and it was a gorgeous night, so the squished quarters were immediately remedied by opening the back door and people chatting out there, too. Next year I’ll have to remember to string some lights in the back so it feels a little more festive. We don’t always do themed costumes as a family, but this year we were all characters from Peter Pan. Even Charly joined in the fun and let me put a bonnet on her for a few minutes to be Nana. She was the perfect Nana, too! A simple blue ribbon (and some elastic for good measure) attached to half of a small tissue paper pom pom made her costume world’s easiest. She’s such a good sport. The last few years we’ve done a variety of dips. Last year…

Halloween Shelves

Our halloween party is this Saturday and we have been in turbo drive trying to get a few things done around here. Of course, nothing goes as planned and there are always hiccups–like, maybe you didn’t order enough wallpaper or something. #thelook  So while there are, no less, than 4 house projects going on around here, I also took it upon myself to transform the reading room shelves into something a little more festive. Every year we have a “photo booth” set up with lights, camera, action and a backdrop. Last year we actually painted this room green for the backdrop–and it stuck! Haha. The room worked so well last year because it is the first room off of the front door making it really convenient, so we knew we wanted to use it again for pictures. We debated moving the piano and using that wall, but in the end,…

The Great Pre-Halloween Project List

Every year around this time, a major fire is lit under us and we get a lot done on the house in preparation for our big Halloween Costume party we throw every year. This year, our party is on the 24th and the invitations just went out. Maybe you caught the annual invite photo (we’ve learned it really drives the whole “wear-a-costume” thing) on instagram? Greta got to pick whatever she wanted at the grocery store for keeping a straight face in this photo. (She picked a blue SunnyD. Haha!) So now that the invites are out, the timer is set to get a slew of projects done. Last year, we redid our main floor guest bath just in time. The year before that, we painted our living room a dark charcoal and added paneling. This year, there are a lot of things. 1. Finish the baseboards. We got everything…

Costume Party 2013: Party On!

Halloween arrived at our house just in time for our party on Saturday.  But before I jump into a few details about that, I wanted to show you an updated photo of our front door with the trim painted Onyx, to match the door (and the kick plate removed).  We love it so much more and it will surely tide us over until that dutch door comes into our lives. Also, biggest pumpkin ever! It was $28, but worth every penny in our book.  Hopefully it will last through Thanksgiving out there. Inside, for the party, we had six more pumpkins displayed on our food spread that Chris put together.  I’m kicking myself for not snapping a photo with my actual camera, but this pic from my phone will have to do. We put a bunch of different size boxes on our counter before covering it with a black halloween-esque…

Costume Party Prep: Invitations

While we still have a lot of house prepping to do before we throw our costume party, we knew we had to get our invitations circulating.  We went back to the format of our first party’s invitations and decided to dress up for a quick photo for a few reasons.  First, although we’ve always had almost everybody in costume at our parties, we’re in a new town and we want to make sure our new neighbors and friends know that we mean costume business. ;)  We also decided it would be a good idea to include Greta in the photo since there are always a lot of questions (even though we include it on the invitation) if kids are welcome.  We like keeping things family friendly and hope that Greta’s cute mug will drive that point home. I mean, how cute is she: If I had to list a third…
