Casual Friday + President’s Day Deals!

The new rug for the living room arrived this week (more on Monday!) and we love it so much. We got a lot of inquiries about purchasing our blue rug, but we rolled it up and put it in storage for now because we still love it so much, too, and will likely use it in the future somewhere. This winter was long and dark and sometimes you just need a little change to get out of a funk, and there’s no shame in that. We’re enjoying our lighter digs and it spurred a little bit of rearranging, too! Everything feels fresh and new and I can’t wait to share the lighting hack Chris came up with for the living room on Monday, too. Changed my life! Other fun things this week! • I’m always on the hunt for new art, and I can’t wait to hang this latest piece by my favorite artist in…

Casual Friday

Many of you have noticed things have been different around here for awhile. We’re still getting multiple emails and questions every day wondering when our post schedule is going to get back to its normal Monday-Friday. First, we couldn’t be more grateful that we have such a strong and loyal readership that we get to share our renovation story with almost daily. Thank you. That being said, I hope our announcement on Monday helped make some sense of that. We’re excited, and we wanted this so so badly, but like my other pregnancies, it’s not easy for me or my body or my family.  I’m very sick, and often times, any sort of screen (especially a scrolling screen like my phone) makes it a lot worse. I’m on an anti-nausea regimen and working closely with my doctor so that I can gain weight in hopes my nerves don’t go into shock again–I have a history…

Where We’re Headed for the Lowe’s Spring Makeover + Casual Friday

Thank you for your patience this week as we read through all 2648 of your submissions for the Lowe’s Spring makeover. We took our task really seriously and ultimately landed on the space above, belonging to Aura S. of Baltimore, Maryland. We’re excited to share plans and progress and Instagram the project in real time when we’re actually doing the makeover. There were so many deserving spaces, and we wish we could have selected more than one, but are hopeful for a lot more future projects like this. We also want to thank you for all of your well-wishes about Greta’s hearing. She had a successful surgery yesterday. She woke up in a lot of pain, but she’s already hearing 100% better and we’re told it’s only going to improve over the next 10 days. To be honest, the recovery is no picnic, but she’s trying to drink a lot of fluids and watching…

Can you spot the ghost in that photo?? (Haha) This week has been so filled, it’s hard to know where to start. There have been some low points, like when we learned Greta was effectively deaf…again. We’ve been through this with her poor little ears when she was two, and unfortunately, although it’s something a lot of kids grow out of, we’re back here again at age six. She’s going to get tubes in (again!) and tonsils and adenoids out in a couple weeks and we’re hopeful that will clear up the issue for good. Chris had the chance to go in the sound booth to hear what she is hearing, and was heartbroken when he couldn’t hear a thing. Although, in a way, it also made a lot of light bulbs go off. Of course, there have been some high moments, too. We have been working on 4 pretty big things behind…

Casual Friday

We always get emails about magazines or websites wanting permission to use photos of our home, and needing a high res version. Which means, I often get to revisit “older” versions of spaces in our home. Sometimes, I show them a more finished version of the room and they want that photo instead, but every once in awhile, I see an old photo that–dare I say–looks better than it’s current state? This happened this week when I got an email from Lonny mag wanting to use the photo below of our entry. While I was digging up the high res image, I realized, while this version of the entry wasn’t perfect, I missed the simplicity of it. Maybe it’s the beginning of the year talking, but I’m ready to strip down a few spaces in our home and really take stock of what’s there because I liked a certain element (whether…

Casual Friday

All the schools have been cancelled in the area the past two days (except the University) because of extreme cold weather. -25 to be exact. Greta was thrilled, even if she only started school again after the break on Tuesday! Ha! I still had a doctor’s appointment to go to and the inside of the door at the office was complete ice. It’s freezing here. Like, so, so ridiculously cold you can’t touch the steering wheel or front door handle without a glove on. We’ve taken the forced hibernation as an opportunity to get started cleaning out our storage room. We emptied everything out of the room and organized it into three gigantic piles of keep, toss and donate. Happily, the keep pile is the smallest. It already feels like a huge victory and we’re just getting started. More fun things this week! • We were named one of Domino’s top 10 best decorating blogs…

JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content. It’s hard to believe there’s essentially one work week left of the busiest, most surprising year of our lives. Although I’ve been blogging for nearly 8 years, it has changed so much every year and there have been many times where I have found myself at sort of a crossroads–unsure of which direction I should go. I’m not sure I always made the right choice or said the right thing but I’m proud of where it all has lead us. I’m anxious for 2017. We already have some major projects lined up, both in our home and, possibly, in yours too–and those are always our favorite projects. We have a full post recapping all the projects and before and afters 2016 brought later next week, but for now, I’m trying to keep my head in the game and…

A couple weeks ago, we got to make Christmas cookies with the girls and yesterday we shared our favorite recipe and a few photos over on Crate and Barrel’s blog. Over the years we have learned it’s not about the way the cookies taste (they WILL have too much frosting), or how they look (really, way too much frosting–gobs on top of gobs), or the mess that will be made (flour. everywhere.)–it’s about the memories and traditions we’re able to make as a family–and there’s not a more heart-warming feeling or sight. So, we pump up the Christmas playlist, hang some garland across the range hood, don our aprons and take a few hours together in the kitchen. You can see the full  article along with links to everything we used and the recipe, right here. The girls’ favorite part was definitely stamping the cookies for Santa. If you don’t already…

Casual Friday

We left last Monday night, the 21st, for Florida to spend Thanksgiving with Chris’s brother and family. It was an amazing time filled with food, that warm sun, swimming, and, yes, we took the girls to Disney World, too. We got home Wednesday night and these two went straight for their bunkbeds. There were a few questions about Faye transitioning to a bunkbed out of the crib when I posted the snapshot on Instagram. She actually doesn’t sleep down here yet. We have a goal to make the transition fully by the end of January. But every night, she comes down and lays in her bed and we read books all together and then I tuck her into her crib. She is very anxious to sleep in her bunkbed, which is exactly what we want. For her to sleep all night in a big bed, and still take a good nap during the day…

Casual Friday

Chris and I just got back from a 24 hour getaway and I’m feeling all sorts of refreshed and re-engerized. It was our 8th anniversary on Tuesday and we were both too busy finishing up projects and the one room challenge and watching the election to really celebrate. So as soon as the reveal went live on Wednesday, we skipped town and slept and slept and ate way too much, talked about projects for the rest of the year and went to the movies–which always feels like a time luxury. We got back last night, ready to be the best parents all over again and ready to finish off this year strong. Other fun things this week! Everyone loves a touch of plaid through the colder months and I stumbled upon this navy and green plaid ottoman that I can’t stop thinking about. The legs are perfect. It’s so rich…and…
